Chapter 840
The Ceo’s Convict Wife
In an instant, Lillianâs colleagues flocked over to her. There was even a hint of unctuousness in their voices.
Some of them began asking Lillian tentatively about the nature of her relationship with Callum.
âDoes Callum want to get back together with you, Lillian?â
âHe took you away from the horde of reporters that day. He was so handsome that he looked like the prince who rescues the princess in a fairy tale!â
âWill you become Mrs. White, Lillian?â
Naturally, Lillian knew that Callum was the reason for the abrupt change in her coworkersâ attitudes toward her.
Wryly, she pondered about how society was so materialistic. As he had experienced a lot over the past five years, it did not bother her very much.
âThere is nothing going on between me and Mr. White now, so please donât speculate any further. I have somebody in my life now, and it will cause trouble for me if you go on proclaiming that,â Lillian said coldly.
Her colleagues looked at each other with embarrassment at her words and dispersed soon after.
At last, Lillian regained some peace.
Callum was nowhere to be seen when she arrived me the day before. âMr. White said that this matter should be laid to rest,â his men had informed her. âDonât worry, Ms. Quinn. Your life will return to normal as before.â
âAs beforeâ¦â she wondered to herself. âDoes that mean he wonât be showing up anymore?â
Lillian felt her nose twinging at that thought, and her eyes suddenly felt moist and warm. âThis is what Iâve been waiting eagerly for,â she told herself. âWhatâs there to be upset about?â
It was the best ending for her and Callum to be separated like this; there was no hatred or resentment, and they would remember each other fondly.
Surely, it was better than getting back together, and then resenting each other if things went wrong again.
Though Callum had told her that she was the one he still loved, she had no courage to be with him again.
She was 33 years old, and no longer 28.
Perhaps the older she was, the more timid she became.
Rosalie heaved a sigh of relief after learning that Lillian had returned home and that her life had regained its calm.
Relieved that Lillianâs life was slowly returning to normal, she announced, âWe will ask Amelia out the next time I am free, and the three of us will have a good catch-up. We havenât had a decent outing since I returned to Strico.â
âOkay! Itâs about time the three of us hung out again,â Lillian replied before sighing. âTime flies. Itâs been almost five years.â
âIndeed. Time does pass quickly,â Rosalie concurred.
Many things had changed over the past five years, but some would never change.
After ending the call with Lillian, Rosalie had the driver take her to an office building on the west side of the city. Intending to start a law firm, she had begun looking at venues.
When she was about to enter the office building, something fell from above without warning.
âDanger!â exclaimed a voice behind her, and Rosalie felt herself shoved aside with great force, causing her to fall to the ground. At the same time, she felt a pair of hands wrapped protectively around her.
Then, the urgent clatter of footsteps drew nearer. âMrs. Youngblood!â the bodyguards and the driver exclaimed.
With a start, Rosalie stood up with the help of the bodyguards. âIâm fine.â Then, she looked at the man getting to his feet and dusting his body with his head bowed.
It was the fellow who saved her moments ago.
âAre you all right, sir? Thank youâ¦â
The man raised his head, and she became stunned.
âZachary!â she realized inwardly.
Back then, he was a prominent young gentleman in Strico, her ex-boyfriend at that time, and also the fiancée of Yvette Hamilton.
16H Zachary was different now.
He was clad in shabby clothes and dirty sneakers. His once handsome face had aged. Even the hairs by his temples were flecked with white.
She recalled that Zachary would be in his mid-thirties, but he looked a decade older.
He was no longer the young man in his typical suit and leather shoes, the bright young heir of the Xanthos family. Now, he looked like a blue-collar worker who was tired of life.
After Zachary ascertained that it was Rosalie standing before him, a trace of surprise flashed across his face. Then, he smiled bitterly. âItâs you. I learned from the news that youâd returned to Strico, but I didnât expect to see you under such circumstances.â
âYouâ¦â Rosalie gazed at him, not knowing what to say for a moment. Zachary had hurt her so much that she had considered killing herself at one point out of desperation. Worst still, she had lost the courage to love again.
If it were not for Jonathan, she shuddered to imagine how miserable she -would have ended up being.
Despite all of that, it had been Zachary who rescued her.
âIâll have somebody accompany you to the hospital for a checkup, and Iâll bear all the expenses.â After a while, Rosalie went on, âYou saved my life, after all. Thank you. Let me know if thereâs anything you need.â
Her words caused an embarrassed flush to tinge Zacharyâs cheeks. âI donât expect anything in return for saving you earlier. Iâm not hurt. I donât need to go to the hospital.â
âReally?â Rosalie stared at Zachary. âWell then, thank you!â After expressing her gratitude once more, she glanced at the flowerpot and scattered soil that had fallen to the ground. Turning around, she addressed the bodyguards beside her, âFind out how this flowerpot fell later.â
âYes, Madam,â the bodyguards replied.
Several security guards of the building came running over when they heard the commotion. âWhat are you doing here again?â they said in disgust when they saw Zachary. âDidnât we tell you that we already have a special delivery team? Donât try and poach our business. Scram!â One of the bodyguards roughly dragged Zachary away from the entrance.
Zachary grimaced in pain. He clutched his right wrist with his left hand.
âStill pretending, are you?â The guard thought Zachary was putting on an act.
âLet him go!â Rosalie ordered the security guard. âA flowerpot fell from your building earlier, and it was this gentleman who saved me. Otherwise, you wouldnât be yelling at him now!â
