Chapter 939
The Ceo’s Convict Wife
On the silent night, Jonathan and Rosalie gazed at each other.
Rosalie felt as if she had been transported back to the first time she met Jonathan. Back then, his face was expressionless, just like now, and his deep, beautiful eyes were empty and cold.
âJon, Iâm sorry,â Rosalie whispered, her apologetic voice ringing clearly in the night.
Jonathan lowered his gaze and asked, âSorry? What are you sorry for?â
âI know I should not have knelt and pleaded with you today. I knew how much you despised your mother, but I still begged you to forgive her,â Rosalie explained.
She had never imagined herself in such a difficult situation one day. Connor and Kaylie had been kind to her, and Rosalie wanted to repay their kindness. However, the last thing she wanted to do was hurt Jonathanâs feelings.
Maybe humans were always biased in some way. The person Rosalie cared the most about in the world was always Jonathan.
The person Rosalie did not want to hurt the most was also Jonathan.
Jonathan remained silent and kept his head down.
Rosalie continued to walk toward Jonathan slowly until they were just a step away from each other.
âJon, can you forgive me?â
Jonathanâs eyelashes trembled slightly, and he slowly raised his head. The emotions in his stunning eyes were incomprehensible. âYou want me to forgive you?â
âYes,â Rosalie answered.
âHow much do you love me then?â Jonathan asked suddenly.
âIâ¦â Rosalie took a deep breath and flashed back to the moment she fell into the sea five years before.
âI love you. You matter more to me than my own life.â
The moment Jonathan heard that, he chuckled, a mocking smile playing at the corner of his lips. âMore important than your own life? Even though you know what Mrs. Smuckler did to me, you still kneel and beg me for someone you have only known for two or three years. Are you even aware of what you are saying right now?â
âWhat do I need to do for you to believe me?â Rosalie asked.
Jonathanâs voice turned cold. âStay out of the matter between Mrs. Smuckler and me. Even if they come to you again and ask for your assistance, you will not say a word in their defense.â
Rosalie was taken aback. Jonathanâs words had put her in a difficult situation.
Deep down, Rosalie knew that it was impossible to make Jonathan give up seeking vengeance against Kaylie. After all, the resentments he had experienced were too great to be forgotten overnight.
Kaylie, on the other hand, was already in her old age, and Connor had always adored her. Connor and Kaylie would be unable to bear Jonathanâs vengeance.
Rosalieâs silence seemed to be within Jonathanâs expectations.
âYou canât even do this? And yet you claim that you love me so much?â Jonathan piped up indifferently.
After saying that, he stood up, turned his back on Rosalie, and refused to look her in the eyes.
Seeing Rosalie would only make Jonathanâs mood worse, making his love for her seem ridiculous. In actuality, Jonathan had always known that Rosalie loved him less than he loved her.
Yet, Jonathan still repeatedly deluded himself, choosing to believe Rosalieâs lies and believing that what she said was true.
However, when confronted with a decision and put to the test, Rosalieâs lies burst like punctured bubbles, leaving Jonathan unable to deceive himself any longer.
âGo back. Tonight, I want to be alone here without anyone disturbing me,â Jonathan said coldly.
The next second, Rosalieâs arms wrapped around Jonathan from behind, and her face pressed against his back.
V/2 09:021 Jonathanâs body stiffened, and Jonathan heard Rosalie say, âI can refrain from pleading for Mrs.
Smuckler, but Jon, Mr. Smuckler and Mrs. Smuckler have been kind to me. You have no idea how helpless I felt after losing my memory and still having to struggle in this vast city along with my daughter, fighting desperately for survival until I met them. That is when I felt like I could finally catch my breath and take a break.â
After a brief pause, Rosalie tightened her grip on Jonathan, as if doing so would give her the strength to go on. âI understand that you must hold Mrs. Smuckler accountable for what she did in the past, but can we leave it to the law? She was responsible for your severe injury and your fatherâs decision to die as a result of her actions. Please let the legal system handle it.â
Rosalie did not want Jonathanâs hands to be stained with the blood of Kaylie. That should never happen. Too much hatred would lead to an inability to let go.
Jonathan slowly turned around to face Rosalie. âWhat if Iâm unwilling? Relying solely on a legal decision. appears to be too lenient for her. Can a few years in prison compensate for my fatherâs death?â
Rosalie was dumbfounded, her teeth subconsciously biting her lower lip. âSo, what are you going to do to her?â
âIt only seems fair that she pay with her own life since she killed a man, doesnât it?â Jonathan said coldly. Rosalieâs face became even paler as the moonlight illuminated it, making her skin as white as a sheet. Her eyes were filled with fear.
âAre⦠Are you planning to kill Mrs. Smuckler?â Rosalie stammered.
âShouldnât I?â Jonathan retorted. The fear in Rosalieâs eyes sent a sharp pang through his chest.
âIs Rosalie afraid of me? Will she distance herself from me from now on?â Jonathan wondered.
âPerhaps it is justified in your eyes, but in my opinion, we have no right to decide another personâs life or death,â Rosalie said, her body trembling uncontrollably. âPlease, Jon, do not decide your motherâs fate. Do not let your hands become bloodstained. This is not something you should be doing.â
As she spoke, Rosalie held Jonathanâs hand. In stark contrast to hers, his hand was fair and clean, while hers had deformed joints.
âJon, I know what it is like to have your life and destiny decided for you by someone else. That sensation is truly excruciating. When Yvette caused that car accident, I almost died too. If I had gotten out of the car a split second later, it would have exploded, and I would have died right then and there.â
Both Rosalieâs hands and body were trembling, and Jonathan could feel it as well.
Jonathanâs eyes were filled with anguish and self-blame.
The case from back then was painful for Rosalie, but it was not any easier for Jonathan.
In the end, Jonathan did not respond to Rosalie. Rosalie stubbornly stayed with Jonathan at the site of Lucianâs death, clutching Jonathanâs hand tightly, as if Rosalie were afraid Jonathan would abandon her again and she would not be able to find him.
It wasnât until the temperature began to drop that Jonathan and Rosalie returned to the car.
