Lilaâs POV
I returned home, feeling a rush of adrenaline. I had never felt as exhilarated as I did since shifting and
running through the forest in my wolf form.
I was expecting to see Enzo when I returned to the packhouse, but he wasnât anywhere in sight.
âHis car is gone,â my father said, peering out front with a frown.
âHe left?â I asked, furrowing my brows together. âWithout saying anything?â
âPerhaps there was another issue at his pack,â my mother suggested with a shrug.
âYeah, I wouldnât worry too much about Enzo. He can take care of himself. Besides, you can take your
car back to school tomorrow. I checked it thoroughly. It hasnât been touched.â
I nodded, forcing a smile, but it didnât meet my eyes. I felt an unsettled feeling in the pit of my stomach
by the time I reached my room.
Where did Enzo go?
I was disappointed the next morning when Enzo hadnât returned. The guest room, and all his
belongings, were gone. He really just left without saying anything to me.
âWeâll see him at the academy,â Val assured me. âDonât worry too much about it.â
âIâm not worried about it,â I say in return; but even I wasnât believing those words.
âYou canât lie to me⦠Iâm a part of you,â she reminded me.
I gave my family a hug before departing into my car and leaving for the academy. I was glad to be able
to drive myself.
I made a mental note to ask Enzo why he would just leave like this.
However, as soon as I pulled into the parking lot of the school, I couldnât even sense him. I frowned as I
got out of the car.

Was he not here?
âHow was your first shift?!â Rachel asked as soon as I got back to my dorm.
âPainful,â I tell her. âBut exhilarating.â
âAre you going to go all âfull wolfâ on me anytime soon?â
âI might,â I teased. âBetter watch your back.â
We both chuckled.

I went to the arena to meet with Becca, early the next morning, so we can start our training session. I
told her I would help her practice her combat so she can better protect herself.
She eagerly waited for me with a broad smile on her face. I smiled in return, pleased to see her.
âDid you shift?â She asked with wide and curious eyes.
I nodded.
âIâm a little nervous to do it again,â I admitted. âBut Iâll practice more during class.â
âI can help you if you want. Iâm decent at shifting,â she said with a shrug.
âIâll take you up on that,â I chuckled.
Just then, I heard the door of the arena slamming shut and then an annoyed scoff echoed through the
room.
âEw, look what the wolf dragged in. A slut and her omega.â

Enzoâs POV
I said nothing to anyone as I left Elysium. I got into my car and drove as quickly as I could. It took a little
over an hour to get back to Calypso. I didnât bother going to my packhouse, I went straight to the
hospital.
Beta Ethan was standing in the waiting room as I rushed in.
âWhat do you mean she was attacked?â I asked.
âShe was beaten and dragged to the border. Someone recognized her and brought her here. We took
her to the hospital right away. She was barely conscious,â Ethan explained.
âI should have been alerted immediately,â I said, shoving past him.
I felt a wave of fury crossing through me and all I wanted at that moment was to see my mother. This
was my fault; I should have never left her there. I knew she would be in danger if she stayed there
without my support, and I still allowed her to live in the rogue territory.
The last time I saw her was a few months ago; I made it a point to visit her when I could.
âI informed you as soon as I knew for sure who she was,â Ethan tried to explain, following me as I
made
my way toward one of the doctors. âI didnât want to worry you for nothing and itâs not like Iâm that
familiar with what your mother looks like. You never bring her around.â
âRegardless of who she is, I should always be alerted when there is an attack near our pack.â
âI apologize,â Ethan said, lowering his gaze.
Once the doctor noticed me approaching, he straightened his stance and grabbed the clipboard off the
counter.
âAlpha, your mother is going to be just fine. Sheâs currently resting andââ
âWhere is she?â I demanded to know, cutting off his words.
âSheâs in room 175. Itâs just down the hallâ¦â
He managed to get out before I walked past him and toward the rooms.
Ethan stopped following me once I neared the room my mother occupied. I barged into the room,
sealing the door shut behind me.
My mother was left alone; she was hooked up to a bunch of machines and her face was bruised
terribly.
She had claw marks down her neck and bite marks on her ears. Her eyes were black and blue; she
had
bandages along her jawline and a brace around her neck. She had both a leg and an arm in a cast.
She was breathing, though her breath was shallow, and her eyes remained closed.
It broke my heart to see my mother in such a position, but I wasnât surprised that she was attacked. I
knew this would happen eventually if I wasnât there to protect her.
I sat at her bedside, grabbing onto the hand that didnât look so damaged.
Her eyes suddenly opened.
She was awake.
âEnzoâ¦â she whispered.
âDonât try to speak, mom,â I said to her, lowering my gaze. âIâm so sorry I wasnât there. This should have
never happened to you.â
âIt isnât your fault, my love,â she whispered. âThe doctors say I will be fine.â
âWhat happened? Who did this to youâ¦?â
âIt doesnât matterââ
âIt matters to me. Tell me what happened, mom.â
She was quiet for a moment as she stared around my serious face. I wasnât going to give in; I needed
to
know who had the nerve to hurt my mother like this.
âI crossed the borderâ¦â she whispered. âIt was stupid, and I knew better. But we needed suppliesââ
âYou should have called me. I could have gotten you anything you neededâ¦â I tell her; trying not to
sound too harsh. I didnât want to frighten my mother, but my emotions were getting the best of me
quickly.
âI know,â she breathed, glancing away from me. âI shouldnât have been so careless. Especially knowing
what was out there. I didnât think they would be able to sense me so easily⦠not sinceâ¦â her voice
trailed off, not wanting to finish her sentence.
She didnât need to finish it; I knew what she was going to say.
âDid they catch your sent? Is that how they found you?â
My mother gave me a weak nod.
âI should have known it was still a possibilityâ¦â she breathed, tears welling in her eyes as she gazed
up
at me. âI knew the medication took away my abilities⦠but it will never take away the scent.â
âMomââ
âRegardless of what I do to hide from your father and his men, itâll never be enough. They will always
come after me. They will always find me. They will always know that I am a Volana wolfâ¦â
