Chapter 276 Interrogation.
Lilaâs POV

The walk from Enzoâs faculty house to the student lounge felt like an eternity long. Headmaster
Prescott and the police thought it was a good idea to have a gam ma warrior escort me: I quickly
suggested that it was to be Alex who escorted me because he was the only ga mma warrior who knew
where I was.
Of course, I didnât tell them the last part. I just told them I felt more comfortable with a ga mma that I
knew well, and that Alex was the closest one I had at this school. Headmaster Prescott thankfully didnât
argue.
Alex was at the door to Enzoâs house within 15 minutes. He didnât look pleased to have to sneak over
to the faculty housing and escort me to the student lounge, but I also wasnât pleased to need an escort.
I wished Enzo could come with me, but I knew that he couldnât..
1 hugged him and kissed him goodbye before heading outside with Alex. He walked behind me while
we went across the campus. I held my head down, feeling like a complete criminal even though I didnât
do anything wrong.
But I couldnât help the knot that kept tightening in my stomach. They were going to be questioning me; I
just hoped Enzo didnât get brought up during this questioning. Iâm not sure Iâd be able to lie my way
around my relationship with him.
It was weird walking across an empty campus. It was like a complete ghost town; it was depressing
and. unlike the school that I have come to know and love so dearly. Only a few ga mma warriors
patrolled the campus and when they looked at me, I saw a look of utter disapproval, like they had
already convicted me
of this crime.
After what felt like a lifetime, we reached the student lounge. It didnât even look like it was open;
typically, there would be lights on the door and in the windows; they were light-up signs that brought
color and life to the lounge. But they were all turned off; it was dreary.
Alex was the one who opened the door for me and when I stepped inside, I saw that there were only a
few lights on and it was completely quiet. A few cops were sitting at one of the tables and a man waspât
wearing a copâs uniform, but he was seated next to Headmaster Prescott, and they were murmuring to
one another, looking over some notes it appeared.
They both paused and looked at me though as I walked into the lounge and toward them. The couple
of copies that sat at a table beside one another were also looking up from their tablets to almost glare
at me.
A chill went down my spine and I had to stifle a shiver.
As I got further into the room, Headmaster Prescott stood to her feet and gave me a kind smile while
motioning to the seat in front of the table she sat at with that strange gentleman.
âLila, this is Detective Sanchez,â she introduced.
1 forced a smile, hoping that it didnât seem too forced.
âHello,â managed to say as I walked toward the waiting seat. I just wanted to be clear, you are not in
trouble,â Prescott said, lowering herself into her seat as she eyed me carefully. âThe Detective just
wants to ask some questions.â
âItâs the procedure,â Detective Sanchez said, agreeing. He didnât sound angry, just busy. He didnât
bother

looking at me; he was glaring at his notes.

âI know this is a lot to take in and we would like to go as gentle as possible,â Prescott said softly, but
she glanced at the detective while she said that last part.
He
only grunted in response, making her press her lips firmly in a disapproving manner.
âLila is your name?â The detective asked, finally looking at me.
I nodded my head once.
âYes, sir.â I answered, glad that my voice came out strong.
âI have here that you are the president of the student committee.â
âShe was just voted the president recentlyâ Prescott answered before I could.
This resulted in an annoyed grunt as the detective glared at her.
âI can get through this a lot quicker if you allow me to do my job without interruption,â he said through
his teeth. âI need to hear the answers from the person in question.â
She looked like she wanted to protest, but then closed her mouth and leaned back in her seal.
Annoyance was clear on her face, but I tried not to pay attention to her
The detective turned back to me, narrowing his eyes, waiting for my response.
âYes, sir,â I answered. âAs of recently, I am the president of the student committee.
âAnd howâs that going for you?â
I was surprised by the question; I raised my brows at him. He just looked at me curiously, as if he
genuinely wanted to know the answer.
âItâs going fine.â I told him. âI had my first meeting yesterday and it went well. Until afterwardsâ¦â My
voice trailed off as I remembered the events that unfolded after the committee meeting.
The detective looked intrigued as he leaned across the table and closer toward me.
âAnd what happened afterward?â
I looked at him pointedly,
âI saw the cops and overheard them talking about a girl that died,â I said in a breath without missing a
beat.
I watched as Detective Sanchezâs face fell in disappointment.
âYou were close to the victim?â He asked, narrowing his eyes at me.
âMerida,â I corrected him, not liking that he wasnât using her name and making her sound like an object.
âShe was in a couple of my classes, but I wouldnât say we were close.â
âAnd how was Merida as a student?â He then asked, emphasizing her name.
âm not sure I understand the question.â I said after a short pause.

âDid she get good grades?â He asked. âWas she talkative? Did she answer a lot of questions? Was she
active in class? Did teachers like her?â
â His questions were almost overwhelming. I glanced at Headmaster Prescott, and she gave me an
encouraging head nod and I took a deep breath before looking back at the detective.
âShe didnât stand out,â Ladmitted. âBut yes, she answered questions when asked. She was polite to her
classmates and teachers. As far as I knew, she got decent grades. But I didnât talk to her that much, so
Iâm
not sure.â
âWhy didnât you talk to her that much?â
For some reason, his question hurt. He made it sound like 1 purposely didnât talk to or isolated her.
âWe walked in different circles,â 1 shrugged, trying to remain as casual as possible. âWe didnât have the
same friends. But I never minded her.â
âDid she have many friends?â
âIâm not sure,â I answered as honestly as I could. âI know she had a couple of girls she hung out with.â
âI have listed here that she was friends with an Alison and a Mary, Detective Sanchez said, eyeing his
paper carefully, âDo those names ring the bellâ
âI suppose so,â I said, shrugging again. âI saw them around campus.â
âHave you ever noticed the girls arguing?â
âNot that I recall,â I stated, trying my best to remember, but I couldnât. I donât think Iâve ever seen Merida
get into any arguments.
âAnd you never had an issue with her yourself?â He asked, furrowing his brows together. âShe never
once made you mad or upset?â
I stared back at him in disbelief.
âNo, detective,â I answered simply. âI never got into any arguments with her.â
âBut you got into arguments before?â
âExcuse me, how is that relevant?â Headmaster Prescott interrupted.
âAll my questions are relevant,â he answered, his jaw clenching.
âLila is an 18-year-old girl; of course, she had gotten into arguments before. It doesnât mean sheâs
killed. anyone,â Prescott hissed, angrily.
âI didnât say it did,â he said in return, not even giving her a second glance. âBut thereâs a connection
everywhere we look. My job right now is to find the start of the connection.â
âLila has never gotten into serious trouble before-
âA student was killed by another student at your school, Headmaster. Werewolf or not, murder is
murder. Lila was described as a popular girl who just won the election for president of the student
committee. She has connections and ties with most students on this campus; if Iâm going to find a
connection between the victim and her murderer, Iâm going to start with this 18-year-old.â

Prescott opened her mouth to say sonicthing in return; she was red in the face, and I couldnât tell if it
was because of embarrassment or anger. But I spoke instead, stopping her from making the detective
any angrier.
âI wouldnât consider myself popular. Iâm liked amongst my peers because I always treat them with
respect and Iâm kind to them. I help them with their homework and tutor them when I can. I donât
disinclude anyone and Iâm always willing to listen to their complaints. Thatâs what makes me a good
president. Iâm learning as 1 go, but I have a lot of ideas on how to make this school better and to make
everyoneâs experience amazing. Iâm well-trained in combat and yes, Iâm a Volana. Iâm learning to
control my powers and Iâm doing a better job at it than I did in the beginning. I use my powers and my
combat abilities to help students. I break up fights when I see them and defend those in need. I never
once hurt a student and I would certainly never kill anyone. So, if you are looking for a tie between me
and Meridaâs murderer. you arenât going to find it with me. If I saw something. I would have done
something. Not only because itâs my duty as president, but because itâs the right thing to do and I was
raised to always do the right thing.â
Detective Sanchez and Headmaster Prescott both stared at me with open mouths, processing my
words.
Prescott was the first to recover.
âWell said, Lila,â she said quickly, giving me a proud smile. She then looked at the detective with a
pointed. look. âDo you have more questions, Detective?â
He cleared his throat.
âJust one⦠where were you the night before last night,â he asked, eyeing me carefully.
My heart fell into my stomach: 1 knew the answer right away, but it wasnât an answer I was able to
share. with him. Because if I did, my relationship with Enzo would be found out.
