Haileyâs lips curled into a smile. âI didnât want to disturb you, so Iâve been hanging out with Declan at school.â Her words made Pamela smile.
Just then, Oscar showed up, and Hailey exited the room. After settling down in Oscarâs office, Oscar handed Hailey a report and âMs. Halley, the patientâs report is out.â
âHow is it?â asked Hailey.
Shaking his head, Oscar announced, âThe patient has lateâstage cancer.â

âIâm sure. The patient mustâve been diagnosed a few ago. She knew about it, but she never received any treatment nor told anyone about it.
âAnd now, the cancer has spread to her heart and brain. She only has two months left.â
Hailey slumped into the chair. She never expected Pamela to have only two months left to live.
Hailey could not help but wonder why Pamela never told anyone about it or received treatment. Even worse, her children had no idea about it.
The neighbor, Nicole Walsh, and Aileen sat beside Pamela. Aileen poured a glass of water and offered it to her.

Leaning against the bedhead, Pamela took a sip and said, âThank you so much, Ms. Walsh.â
Nicole held Pamelaâs hand. âThereâs need for that been neighbors for the longest time. I know it hasnât been easy taking care of two children alone.â
Glancing at her teenage daughter, Pamela said, âWe managed no matter how tough it was. Itâs going to be tough on Declan now that heâs an adult.â Nicole let out a sigh. âDeclanâs strong and outstanding man, just like his father. Heâs grown into a great man.â
At the mention of Declanâs father, Pamelaâs eyes feddened. Nicole immediately realized she had misspoken Declanâs father had always been the sacred pain. A mere mention of him would reopen the emotional wounds in their hearts.
