Marrying the Man in the Dark
Chapter 626 A Solitary Life
Zachary nodded.
âThe patient I performed surgery on that day⦠was Damienâs sister.â
Zachary nodded again. âWas that how you got involved with him again?â
âI wouldnât exactly describe it as getting involved.â Cherise sighed lightly. âBut it does seem like he wants to
reconcile with me.â
She continued narrating her recent encounters with Damien to Zachary. Naturally, she omitted the part about a
certain⦠incident with Damien that had transpired in the hospital staff dormitoryâ¦
âIt appears he still harbors feelings for you.â Zachary looked at sunset on the horizon before turning to look at
Soren, playing with the remote-controlled toy helicopter on the grass before him. âSometimes I find myself envying
Damien.â
âThe person he loves also reciprocates his feelings. He has a family and a woman who loves him wholeheartedly.â
His dark eyes were as clear as ever, but there was a hint of anguish that Cherise couldnât quite explain or
comprehend.
Upon looking at his side profile, she felt an odd sense of guilt. âYouâll find someone like that eventually.â
âMe?â After a moment, Zachary turned to look at her and chuckled at himself. âYou donât
need to console me.â
âAs for meâ¦â He glanced at Cherise indifferently, a flicker of exasperation in his eyes. âIâm afraid Iâll live a solitary
life.â
Serafina blinked as she was eating strawberries at the side. âMommy, what does that mean?â
Cherise was taken aback and was unsure how to explain it to the little girl. But Zachary reached out and gently
tousled the childâs hair. âLiving a solitary life⦠means that nobody likes Uncle Zach.â
âHow can that be?â Serafinaâs eyes instantly widened in surprise. âYouâre so kind, Uncle Zach. Many people like you!
I really like you, Uncle Zach!â
Zachary was amused by the little girlâs innocent response. âHow much do you like me?â
âI really like you! I like you a lot!â
âDo you like me more than strawberries?â
The little girl pursed her lips, pondering for a moment. âI like you as much as I like eating strawberries!â
âGreedy girl.â The man shook his head, âYouâve inherited your momâs love of food. How about this? Iâll visit your
house tomorrow and bring you lots of strawberries, okay?â
âOkay!â The little girl extended her hand to the man. âPinky promise!â
âAlright!â
Cherise watched Zachary patiently coaxing the little girl as they sat on the bench and felt a warmth in her heart.
When she closed her eyes, she could still recall the promise Zachary had made at her motherâs hospital bed. âDonât
worry, Aunt Charisa. Iâll take care of Cherise and her baby. Iâll stay
with them until she finds true love again.â
At the time, Charisa had held Zacharyâs hand with a pained expression. âZachary, I donât want you to treat Cherise
as your younger sisterâ¦â
âAunt Charisa, I understand, but⦠letâs not force anything on her, alright?â
That day, Cherise stood outside the door and heard Zachary repeatedly persuade Charisa not to pressure or stress
herâ¦
She was very moved but also felt distressed for him. She was so saddened that⦠she almost burst in impulsively to
tell him to consider his own needs instead.
She would feel less guilty if he acted like a jerk and tried to control her by restricting her freedom.
