Chapter 5
Frank placed his long fingers against Mariaâs burning forehead. She was so hot that he nearly scalded himself.
He cursed under his breath with a low, harsh tone, âDamn it!â
She was running a fever, and it seemed to be quite severe.
Frank lowered his gaze, staring at Mariaâs delicately furrowed brows. It was obvious that she was in discomfort. She seemed to be murmuring something indistinct, her words barely audible.
If she died, their marriage would naturally be annulled!
He could then wait till Nina woke up and loved Nina as a single man.
A fleeting trace of viciousness flashed through his jetâblack eyes, but it was gone in an instant.
He took out his phone from his pocket and dialed a familiar number. When the call connected, he commanded, âBring your medicine kit and come to Johnston Court immediately.â
After hanging up, he glanced at the suffering woman on the bed. He turned abruptly and left the bedroom.
He hated Maria and wished she would die, but he wanted her to stay alive.
Sometimes, living was more of a torment than dying.
Frank had called the family doctor of Johnston Court, Ginger Lambert. After checking Mariaâs temperature and giving her IV fluid, Ginger went to the study to explain the situation to Frank.
Gingerâs grandfather and father were family doctors for Johnston Court. Following the family tradition, Ginger took up the same profession. Additionally, due to being close in age to Frank, they had grown up together, which lessened the usual fear others had of Frank.
Upon seeing Frank, Gingerâs complained first. âHow did she manage to get such a high fever? Why didnât you ask me to come over earlier?â
âI wasnât here,â Frank said expressionlessly.
Ginger did not appreciate Frankâs attitude. After all, that woman was recognized by the Johnston family and had become his wife. âWhat about the maids? Didnât they notice anything?â
Gingerâs words were very clear. The reason Maria was treated like this was tacitly approved by Frank. Otherwise, with her status as Mrs. Johnston, how could she have developed a fever without a servant noticing, lying alone in bed with no one inquiring about her wellâbeing?
âThis is a matter of the Johnston family. It is not for outsiders to inquire! Mind your own business!â Frank didnât bother to answer Gingerâs questions. He knew that the womanâs fever was probably because of him.
But she brought it upon herself. If she hadnât provoked him, why would she have to bear these consequences?
After hearing him, Gingerâs face immediately darkened. âThis brat. He is still the same. He likes to use his status to silence everyone. Fine. I wonât ask anything then, he thought.
âIâve given her an injection and put her on a drip. Someone should watch over her for about an hour. After that, it can be removed. Give her the medicine on the bedside table to drink, too. If she doesnât recover from the fever by tomorrow, she must be taken to the hospital,â Ginger instructed.
Having said what was necessary, Ginger did not linger any longer. He turned and left the study and Johnston Court.
Frank tightly furrowed his brows and instructed the butler to send a servant to watch over Maria. The butler woke up Paige and told her to take care of Maria.

Frank continued to handle his work in the study. Time flew before he knew it.
When he finished dealing with his immediate tasks, roughly an hour had passed.

Thinking of Maria in the bedroom, Frankâs eyebrows slightly furrowed. He got up from his seat and made his way there.
Quietly pushing open the door, he saw the maid holding a cup of liquid medicine, looking helpless. Upon seeing him enter, she seemed to have found a savior. âMr. Johnston, MâMiss Greenwood canât swallow the medicine.â
Frank walked briskly to the bedside. His pitchâblack eyes glanced down slightly at the woman lying on the bed. Her face remained pale, and the furrow of her brows seemed to be less.
The corner of her lips, devoid of color, still had traces of medicine. It seemed to be from a moment ago.
He sat on the edge of the bed and reached out. He grasped her slender shoulder and pulled her up. He gestured to the maid, âGive it to me.â
