After we got back from the hospital, Millie and I took a good shower, and Millie fell asleep quickly. I laid in bed, but my mind kept wandering back to what had happened that morning.
When I woke up, I was shocked⦠I was asleep in Mikeâs arms! And he didnât seem to be awake. I tried to move, but he seemed to be hugging me tighter. I gave up and enjoyed this moment. I gazed at his handsome face,
his long eyelashes, his nose, and his sculpted lips. I couldnât help but touch his face while wishing I could imprint all of this into my heart.
But none of this belonged to me. I couldnât help but sigh.
âGood morning, dear.â
Mike woke up. I felt more and more embarrassed and tried to break free from his arms. But he wouldnât let go and he teased me. My face burned and I unconsciously bit my lip.
âBaby, I canât hold it in anymore. Please donât do this again.â I was wondering what he couldnât hold back from when he kissed me. There was a lingering kiss on my forehead, nose, and cheeks⦠It was intoxicating, and
as I was waiting for him to go all the way down to my lips, he stopped. I heard myself sigh deep inside.
What did this kiss mean? What were you expecting, Melanda? He had a girlfriend. He might propose to her soon. What have you done to yourself? Do you want your heart to break again?
Wake up, silly woman. I couldnât help but curse myself fiercely.
I didnât want to think about any of this anymore. I forced myself to rest.
The day passed quickly and Mike did arrive in the evening. It seemed like he was already rested and he looked energetic. When I got downstairs, Mom and Millie had already had dinner.
âBaby, you looked tired, so I didnât wake you up for dinner,â Mom told me.
âThank you, Mom. I love you,â I told Mom gratefully.
âMike, you havenât had dinner yet, have you? I made your share too. Thanks for taking care of Millie last night,â Mom said to Mike.
âThatâs great, Aunt Annie. I love your cooking!â Mike looked hungry.
âIn that case, you guys eat. Iâll bring Millie upstairs to play.â
So Mike and I, one on each side of the dining table, sat opposite each other. Mike looked like he had a great appetite. But after what happened this morning, I couldnât face Mike calmly. There was an awkward, strange
tmosphere. And this scene looked weird, like we were on a date.
Baby, are you okay? You look hungry,â Mike asked.
âm fine,â I answered curtly with my emotions in turmoil.
told you, you donât have to worry. Millie just has a cold. Weâre all with you. Youâre not alone anymore.â
âThank you, Mike. Itâs thanks to you this time, or I donât know what would have happened.â Ugh, I couldnât tell him that wasnât what I was worried about.
âHowâs your girlfriend, by the way?â I asked while looking up at him. When he was about to answer, I quickly looked down.
âWe had a fight and when I woke up, she was gone,â he said while not seeming to care at all.
âWhy? Is it because you didnât come home last night? Maybe I can help you explain,â I asked him, and was surprised to find that he didnât care at all.
âItâs okay. I think she needs to calm down. She always does unexpected things. Iâm used to it,â he replied with a shrug and continued eating.
âHow long have you guys been together?â I asked him curiously while ignoring my food completely. I couldnât swallow anything. There was no point in eating.
âTwo and a half years. We met in New York when | went to a seminar. She was a very ambitious model and I met her at one of their gatherings,â he said and stopped eating.
âWow! So long? So, do you want to get married soon?â I asked while trying to summon the courage to wait for his answer.
âHa ha, yes. I mean, Iâm not young anymore, and I donât have time to mess around anymore. Hannah keeps hinting that we should get married, and Iâm thinking about it. I donât know. Weâll see,â he replied while
watching me intently.
I grabbed the water glass and drank a full glass. I suddenly felt thirsty. The pain in my heart seemed unbearable, and I found it difficult to breathe. I smiled and nodded in silence for a moment. He was studying my face
now, and I kept looking away.
âAre you okay, Melanda?â he asked while still studying me. I nodded eagerly while trying to pretend that everything was okay. The truth was, he just stabbed that knife deeper into my heart.
âIâm fine. Iâm happy for you, Mike. Itâs very rare to find your soul mate and spend the rest of your life with that special person.â My voice was a little too high. Fortunately, Millie came and broke the awkward silence..
