Chapter 24 Did Your Date Go smoothly?
The most touching thing in the world was âsincerity.â Although I wasnât used to Leoâs honest and straightforward way of dating, I had to admit that I was moved by him. If I wanted to move on, the first step was to give myself a chance. I was only 24 years old, and my life had just started. I couldnât let myself stay 18 forever, could I? Just then, I saw my phone screen light up with a message: âBecause Millie had just gotten a little better, Iâm still quite worried about the child.â To my surprise, the message was from Mike.

âBaby, how is your date? Call me if you need anything. Iâm with Millie now.â
How did Mike know about my date? Did Mandy tell him? Or did he visit Millie, and Millie told him? I felt a little emotional and excited to see that it was a text from Mike.
âHowâs Millie? She doesnât have a fever, does she?â I still couldnât stop worrying about the child.
âMillie is fine. With me around, donât worry. You havenât told me how your date is.â Mike seemed to be very concerned about my date.
âUm, weâre eating dinner. The food tastes delicious,â I said truthfully.
Just then, Leo, who was across from me, said, âMelanda, is everything okay? I see youâve been texting someone.â
âOh, itâs okay. Iâm sorry, Leo.â I picked up my spoon and was about to continue enjoying my delicious dinner when my phone screen lit up again. âBaby, remember to come back early. And be careful not to choke while you eat.â
I couldnât help but laugh at the message. This message looked a lot like something my father would send. What was Mike doing? Was he jealous? Through the words, I sensed jealousy. And why did he call me baby again? Even though it was just a text, I still felt my face heat up.
I quickly texted Mike back. âAre you crazy, Mike? You seem like a father jealous of your daughterâs boyfriend.â
Mikeâs reply came quickly. âOkay, Iâm crazy. Iâm crazy for you, baby;)â Oh my God! Was he flirting with me? This lunatic! I was with another man, but he was flirting with me!
I could feel myself blushing even more. Shit. I hoped Leo wouldnât see through me. But it seemed too late for that.
âMelanda, are you hot? Your face is very red.â Why was Leo so attentive?
âItâs okay,â I answered Leo. I decided to ignore Mike. But frankly, the vibe had been ruined, and I became a little distracted. Even though I stopped replying to him, I couldnât help but glance at my phone screen from time to time to see if it lit up again.
It was almost nine when we finished dessert. Leo suggested we take a walk somewhere else, but I wanted to go home. âIâm sorry, Leo, but Millie had a high fever last night and I want to go back early to spend time with her. Iâve never been back so late.â
âIn that case, okay, Iâll take you home. This is the first time youâve left your child. You need time to get used to it.â Leo was such a thoughtful man.
Just as we got into the car, Mikeâs message came again. âBaby, you should come home. Stay away from that guy. You have to be on guard.â This guy was acting too weird tonight.
âDonât worry, weâre already on our way back.â I didnât know if he sensed the impatience in my words.
âThatâs great. Millie and I will wait for you at home.â Mikeâs text arrived quickly. We didnât talk all the way home. When we were almost home, Leoâs voice sounded. âMelanda, Iâm glad you agreed to have dinner with me tonight. If Millie needs anything in the future, you can call me. Iâll definitely help you.â
âThank you, Leo,â I said sincerely. âI had a good time tonight, too.â
The car had just stopped when I saw Mike waiting at the door. Leo was shocked to see that it was Mike. After greeting each other, he asked, âMike, what are you doing here?â
Mike said, âWeâre neighbors. Is it strange for me to be here?â
Leo shrugged without comment. Wasnât it strange to show up at the beautiful neighborâs house at 9: 30 p.m.? Mike was the only one who could say that shamelessly.
âUm, Leo, my daughter, Millie, likes Mike a lot. I think heâs here to see Millie,â I explained.
Mike said again, âBut why are you here?â Anyone could hear the hostility in Mikeâs tone.
Leo said, âI like Melanda. I invited her to dinner.â Leo was indeed a young man of the modern era.
It was Mikeâs turn to be speechless. âSheâs home. You can go.â
âMike, thatâs enough. Whereâs Millie?â I interrupted Mike before he could say anything more.
âMillieâs already asleep,â Mike replied.
I turned to Leo. âThanks for driving me home, Leo. Drive safe on the road.â Leo was in no mood to stay any longer. He said goodbye and left.
âSo, did you agree to him?â Mikeâs voice came from behind me.
