747 The Babyâs Father Family History
The wait outside the obstetricianâs office was not as fun as Adele thought it would be. Not that it was a field trip or something, but then the sight of most pregnant women with their husbands or boyfriends by their side caused a sour taste in her mouth. They were so sweet with their partners, it left her very annoyed.
Just like Adele who came with her mother, there were other young ladies in her condition too, but then, her eyes couldnât help but stray to the couples. Adele couldnât help but release a sigh, running her hand through her hair in frustration. If only she had closed her heart â and legs â she wouldnât be in this condition.
Thanks to the stupid sex, she is about to lose everything she worked hard for just when sheâs at the pinnacle of her success. God must really hate her. All kinds of depressive and negative thoughts ran through Adeleâs head that she didnât hear her name being called until her mother tapped her on the shoulder and she roused to reality with a slight gasp.
âItâs your turn,â Angelica told her, gesturing to the secretary standing at the entrance of the doctorâs office and watching her with a bit of impatience.
Her cheeks burned in shame and Adele hurriedly rose to her feet. She was usually not this dim-witted but she wasnât at her top form at the moment. Masking her expression and ignoring the stares the others were giving her, has drawn attention with her little drama, Adele followed after her mother.
The secretary opened the door for them and they walked into the large office and closed the door after them. They came for an ultrasound and the doctor was a middle-aged woman who smiled brightly at them and requested they took a seat.
âIâm taking it that this is your first pregnancy?â The doctor surmised.
âYeah, I got knocked up by the babyâs father,â Adele said crudely without an ounce of a smile. If it wasnât for the slight irritation in her tone, one would think that sheâs emotionless.
âOh. Is that so.â The doctor said to her, âWell, the good news is that youâre not the first and I have a lot of girls in your condition.â
.....
âAnd I guess none of them was deceived by the babyâs father who used her to get the woman he had been after and instead she received an unwanted pregnancy as a parting gift after getting what he wanted.â
âUrmâ¦.â The doctorâs jaw dropped open, feeling a bit lost. She didnât know how to deal with this one, no one told her it was a counseling session.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
âWe came here for an ultrasound, doctor,â Angelica stepped in and saved the doctor from being treated to another of Adeleâs dramatic fuss. The young lady could be a pain in the ass especially when sheâs grumpy.
And that was it with the questions, the doctor instead directed Adele to the bed where she was to lie down. Hence while she got onto the bed, the doctor informed her as a formal procedure,
âThe ultrasound would sound waves to create images of your baby while itâs in the uterus aka your womb. It is a safe and pain-free test, and there is no increased risk of miscarriage or harm to your baby. The sound waves used are at very low frequency and so will not hurt you or your baby and your baby will not be able to hear them.â
âLetâs just get this over with,â Adele said nonchalantly. She couldnât wait to get out of here because it represented the reality of motherhood that she just stepped into.
âFine,â The doctor breathed. This was not the first time that she had a patient with an attitude.
Adele already lifted her shirt so the doctor placed the gel on her stomach and when she shivered involuntarily, the doctor told her, âIt would feel cold, but only for a while. And you should relax.â
And she did relax, her eyes fixed on the computer with expectations as the doctor placed the transducer against her skin. Adele didnât understand whatever happened next and it was only the doctor speaking, telling her that pulses of sound waves are being sent from the probe to her baby, creating echoes that are turned into images by the computer.
Adele was unable to interpret the images on the monitor until the obstetrician said, âAnd thereâs your fetus, congratulations.â She pointed to the grayish picture that kept pulsing.
Honestly, she didnât know what she had been expecting, however Adele still stared at the screen in awe. That little thing was growing inside of her?
âEverything seems to be progressing well, your babyâs heartbeat is strong and⦠oh my God,â The doctor suddenly gasped, drawing both Angelica and Adeleâs attention.
âWhat is it?â Adele leveled an anxious look at the doctor. She hoped the woman wasnât about to tell her that her child had complications and she couldnât have it, just when she was beginning to like the idea of pregnancy.
âIs there a problem, doctor?â Angelica asked with concern when the doctor didnât answer and stared at the screen with intense concentration. And when the doctor did open her mouth, it was to ask,
âThe babyâs father, whatâs his background? Is there a history of multiple births in his or even your family? If youâre a multiple yourself or your mother and, or sisters naturally conceived multiple babies, then you are more likely to as well. This is because there is a genetic link of hyper ovulation amongst the women in some familiesâ
âWhat do you mean by multiple birthsâ¦.?â It quickly dawned on Adele, âY-you mean like twins?â She stammered, swallowing uneasily. How could she have twins? How would she take care of two children all by herself?
But the doctor answered, âWrong answer. Dream bigger. Quadruplets.â
âWhat?!â
Both mother and daughter didnât know who screamed the loudest, but the look they shared briefly mirrored the fears on both of their faces. However, unlike Angelica who was simply struck speechless, Adele fainted right away â and wished she would never wake.
âAdele!â Angelica screamed, shaking her, she couldnât lose her daughter like this. But the doctor took over from her and attempted to revive her.
