Chapter 21: twenty

Tutoring The Bad Boy | ✓Words: 8918

Once the barista called mine and Lucas's name, I took the two drinks and headed back into my mom's car. I'd have my own car by now but we're a little short on money. It was a little upsetting but I understand why so I just accepted it.

I put the drinks in the cupholders and checked the time before heading to the nearby park. This town was small and everything was close so it was really convenient considering I had to be there in fifteen minutes. Luckily it was only a five minute drive.

On the way there, I blasted Don't Stop by 5 Seconds of Summer. I didn't understand how people didn't like the song— it was a masterpiece. I huffed in annoyance when I got a text on the phone. Texting while driving is very bad and leads to car crashes, but it's just so tempting to check. But I'm not like that so I ignored it and yelled the lyrics to Don't Stop.

When I arrived, the first thing I did was check my phone. There was a text message from Lily and that's when it hit me that we never hung out often anymore. We used to be with each other every second of the day but now we weren't.

lily: hi! we haven't hung out in forever so do u wanna have a girl's night at my house? i'll prepare snacks and everything! my parents aren't gonna be here tonight

me: ahh i'm so sorry! are you sure though? because i'm a little sick and i don't want you to get sick

lily: i'm flattered by ur concern but i don't care (: i just wanna hang out with u

me: whatever u say boo

lily: so 6 pm tonight?

me: yeah. hey i gotta go now, i'll catch up with you later. i love you xo

I put my phone in my pocket with a happy smile on my face and headed toward the park with the two drinks. I honestly was going to wait for Lucas to drink my refresher but the temptation was too strong, so I only took a few sips.

There were only a few people at the park and some kids on the playground but it was probably because it was so early in the morning. Or because of the fact that it was a Thursday and there was no school break.

I shrugged to myself before feeling two hands come down on my body with a lot of pressure.

"Boo!" the familiar voice rang through my head and I turned around to see Lucas. His eyes widened and he threw his hands up, "Please don't kick me in the balls!"

I laughed and urged him to sit down next to me. I stared at him for a moment. He was wearing a black sweatshirt with gray sweatpants. His hair was an absolute mess and he wore his glasses but I could still see the bags under his eyes.

Yet even though he looked like a mess, he was still handsome.

"Take a picture, it'll last longer," Lucas told me with a small smirk, making my face turn red. Even though he was being narcissistic as always, I could hear the tiredness in his voice.

"That's the second time you've told me that," I replied and rolled my eyes at him.

"Well, you never did the first time," he responded and shrugged.

I suddenly remembered the drinks that I got and grinned to myself, saying, "I got you a drink."

"Oh?" he said in confusion. I handed him the drink that I didn't even know what it had inside and saw his smile turn even bigger.

"It's from the coffee shop! And it's my favorite drink!" he exclaimed and quickly took a sip out of it, then said, "amazing as always."

I laughed at his enthusiasm, telling him, "I just told the barista to get her a random drink. I was a bit worried you wouldn't like it."

He didn't answer me, mostly being because he was to engulfed in the drink. That's me with food right there.

"I have something to show you," I told him and he looked into my eyes. His eyes gleamed with curiosity. "You know how you showed me your favorite in your house? Well, I'm going to show you my favorite place in this town."

"Awe, how cute, Kylie," he cooed at me, making me roll my eyes again. "I was just kidding!"

I grabbed his hand and stood up from the chair. The place was close to the park, so I didn't need to drive there. I started to move then felt a tug back.

I turned around to look at Lucas in confusion. He said nothing but pulled me into a hug. I tensed up but then hugged him back with a small smile and my eyes closed. It felt perfect and I didn't know how to feel about that.

"Thank you," he muttered, still holding me in his embrace. Confused thoughts ran through my mind before he spoke again. "For being there for me."

I rested my head on his shoulder, not saying a word. I didn't need to— my actions spoke louder. We stood like that for a few more moments before we both pulled away.

"Come on, let's go," I told him with a small smile, my hand still intertwined with his.

We walked toward a small cliff, which was made to walk up to the top. As we did, Lucas asked, "We're going to a cliff?"

"It's much more than that!" I exclaimed with a small giggle.

Once we reached the top, we saw a fence surrounding the edge of the cliff so no one would accidentally fall. There was a gravel path behind it and a few benches behind the trail. When you looked over the fence you could see the entire town.

"It's the most beautiful when the sun sets. Especially during Christmas time because that's when all of the colorful lights show," I smiled and leaned my arms against the fence. Lucas soon did the same.

"Well, how about we come back here when the sun sets?" Lucas suggested and turned his head toward me.

I looked at him with a nod and said, "I would love that."

He smiled at me and held his hand out. "Let's go eat somewhere. It's about to rain," he said and I put my hand into his for the second time.

"What if it rains when the sun starts to set?" I asked. The rain was okay, but I wouldn't stand in it if I could go inside or under something.

It was better to just watch the rain fall in my opinion.

"Well then we can buy an umbrella," he replied with a laugh. "Don't worry, KyKy."

I rolled my eyes at the newfound nickname which was actually a really disgusting nickname. Lucas remained unbothered when I did so, just shrugging at me with that same old smile plastered on his face.

It was nice when he smiled. It reminded me that he was going to be okay. It reminded me of all of the beautiful things in life, like sunshine and butterflies. His smile made me smile as well.

And maybe I was okay with that.

He put his hand in mine and stared at me for a moment before saying, "You know, you're really beautiful."

I looked away because of the blush that formed on my cheeks from his words but nevertheless said, "You know, if we keep holding hands, people are going to think we're a couple."

I didn't get to see Lucas's expression since I was looking away, but he said, "You're not objecting to it, are you?"

If I could blush even more, I did because no, I wasn't telling him that I didn't want to hold hands but I didn't say that I did. Even though I was the one who made us hold hands in the first place.

I didn't say anything after that even though we were still holding hands on our way to an ice cream shop not far from the park. It was the same one I went to a few days ago with him. The memory still seemed so perfect.

I broke out of my thoughts when I felt a few raindrops splash against my clothing. I mentally groaned and glared at the rain. What was the old childhood rhyme? Rain, rain, go away, come back on Saturday.

Something like that.

Lucas glanced back at me and grinned, starting to run. I'm not about to run just because of some dumb rain! I felt a tug against my arm and rolled my eyes, knowing that I had to. So I started to run as fast as I could and I could literally see that Lucas wasn't even trying.

He dared let out a yawn as I ran the fastest I could possibly go. I glared at him and stopped running after we were under a roof. I put my hands on my knees and panted. It wasn't helping that the left side of my hip was hurting.

Lucas watched me with an amused look on his face, saying, "You really are out of shape."

I kept glaring at him then decided to punch his arm. I replied, "No dip, Sherlock."

"Sherlock reminds me of Shrek," he randomly responded with a small laugh. I decided to let myself laughed with him. He continued, "Whenever I think of Sherlock, I think of a green ogre saying 'get out of my swamp' and I'm not sure why."

I bursted out laughing again then stared at Lucas, who looked so perfect at the moment. Yeah, his hair was still messy and he definitely didn't try to put on presentable clothing, but it didn't matter because at that moment he looked like an angel. With his messy hair and all.

"Should we go get ice cream now?" he smiled with the same amused look etched onto his face. I nodded and went into the shop with the boy I used to hate and wet clothes.

Life really is unpredictable, huh?
