Chapter 19: An angel, his baby and a whole lot of love

Baby, You're My AngelWords: 5129

I was looking at him expectantly. He took a deep breath and I did the same.

"Ok. So, What is your theory?" He was asking me to guess.

I was thinking for a bit and decided to keep it light. "Are you the devil? Because I might actually believe that." I said sarcastically.

He just smirked and said, "No, I am an angel. Your angel."

At that moment I knew there was no turning back. Who could have thought I would fall for a cheesy guy!?

Wait. What? I didn't even hear his story yet. He healed me with his touch. Did he mean it literally?

"Angel? Like with all the wings and stuff?"

"Well, technically, I am a human who is helping an angel. It's complicated".

"Then make me understand" was all I can say at that moment.

"I don't know where to start". He looked deep in thought.

"Just start from the beginning" I told him. Should I hold his hand?

As if he read my mind, he took my hand and entwined my fingers with his.

"Ok. Just like I told you, I was raised in an orphanage. My guardian was the one who was running it. I don't have any memory of my birth parents. My guardian told me they left me in front of his office".

I squeezed his hand reassuringly and nodded for him to continue.

"We called him father and he took care of us well. Me and a bunch of other kids. He loved us all and didn't make any of us feel left out. Once we graduated high school, many of my friends figured out their passion and moved out to pursue their dreams. I have volunteered to run the orphanage as our father had to be on the move most of the time. I didn't have any other plans for my future. So I decided that I could stay there and help him".

He continued after a little pause. "And he let me as I insisted that following his footsteps was my dream. When I was about 19 years old, he told that he was an angel. First, I didn't believe him. But when I stayed with him and observed him, I realized that he was telling the truth. He asked me if I wanted to be a part of his job".

"Job?" I wondered aloud.

"Yes, baby. You must have heard of guardian angels. They have the job of protecting the humans. My father is one of them. So I said I would do it but he asked me to wait and think carefully before making a decision. Once I was sure, he gave me a part of his grace to carry out the job".

My mouth had been open the whole time. I have heard stories but I never thought I would see someone like that.

"So I have the responsibility to look over few people who are little special. Like you".

"Few people? You do this with others too?" I was surprisingly a little jealous.

He started laughing. "Of all the things I said, you are asking whether I hang out with the others?"

"Of course. So why am I and few other people special?"

"Finally, a good question. It all goes back to your ancestors. My father was indebted to them in some way and they have asked him to protect their lineage in return. If something happens to you, it might affect my father's promise". He tried to keep it vague for some reason.

"So I am not in danger?" It's not like I was in a gang or something.

"No, baby. No one will hurt you. I promise. This is just my father keeping his word. Listen, it's a long story and I don't want you to be overwhelmed right now". It was his turn to squeeze my hands reassuringly.

"Usually, guardians don't mingle with their subjects. But when I observed you from afar, you were so adorable and I just couldn't get enough. So I broke the rules to talk to you. I could have just sped away after the car incident but I wanted to take a chance".

He did what? "So, what can you do with your powers? Are you immortal now? Will you never age? No, you said you were about 19 when it happened. You don't look 19, no offense. Sorry I am rambling".

"Baby, it's ok to be shocked. I can help people with my power, at least to some extent. I will tell you everything later when I have more time. I am still human so I am not immortal. Yes I don't look 19 'cause I am almost 26".

"Ok" I was lost in my thoughts. Everything was a tangled mess in my mind.

"You are freaking out, right? I shouldn't have said anything. I understand if you want me to leave. But I promise that you are not in danger".

"What? No, I am not freaking out. Well, may be a little. But I don't want you to leave. You can stay, if you want, of course".

"Ok, you can take your time. You can ask me anything but you need to rest for today. I am not going anywhere. We have all the time in the world".

I liked the sound of it. I smiled involuntarily. "Sure, do you want to stay for dinner?"

"Sorry, baby. Can I take a rain check? I want to look for my father. As you can guess, he doesn't use his phone often. I left a note with his friend. I have to wait at my place in case he decided to visit today".

I nodded and he gave me a hug before he left. I missed him already. I knew it was going to be a long night.
