Chapter 6: Coffee date just around the corner

I would be lying if I said I wasn't expecting a call. Can't he at least text? The standard protocol dictates to call or text within few hours after you got the number, right?

Why was I disappointed? He might have lost my number. Yes, that could happen. The ink might have smudged.

Did I write it with a waterproof pen? I was not a psycho to carry waterproof pen with me. If I knew he would ask, I might have brought one.

He could have washed his hands for dinner. How could he do that when he was the one asked for my number? Was he just playing with me? No, his expressions were genuine.

I was getting tired of making a conversation with myself. I was not that helpful. You are used to it by now, right?

I was chanting "Don't think about him" repeatedly which kind of defeated its whole purpose.

Rose appeared suddenly beside me and asked "What happened? Is it serious? Did the code crash? You aren't the praying type. Are you ok?"

I sighed and muttered "Nothing". At the same time my mobile vibrated and signaled that a text was received.

I reacted in milliseconds by grabbing and unlocking the phone. I was trying to hide my disappointment when I saw the text was from a food chain giving out free coupons for burgers.

Rose immediately knew something was up when I reacted poorly for the free food announcement.

"Are you really ok? Are you dying?" She asked with real concern in her eyes. Trust her to be dramatic in the most normal situations.

"No, Rose. I am not dying. I am just tired of the burger." I tried to cover my tracks but nothing goes unnoticed in detective Rose's eyes.

"Nice try, Lexy. I will buy you a coffee and you will tell me all about it". She tried to buy me off with a coffee and it almost worked.

But we got interrupted by our boss. "Hey guys! Meet our new designer George. He is very talented and he will be working with us from today".

Oh, yeah. A new designer was supposed to join us today. I totally forgot. Can you blame me?

My brain had limited capacity storage and a certain somebody was occupying most of it without any rent. Let's shoo him away for a minute. Doesn't work like that, does it?

"Wow", Rose whispered to me. She was right. George was a good looking guy. But he was not as hot as you-know-who.

Dear brain, just stop it. Sincerely, me.

George was friendly and he mingled easily with all our teammates. Rose introduced herself and then turned to me. I said "Hi, I am Alex. A developer. Please let me know if you need any help".

George thanked us and left to talk with the rest of the team. What a nice guy! Unlike someone.

Dear brain, should I repeat myself?

After some time, George came back to my cabin. He smiled and said, "Really nice to meet you, Alex. I hope we could be friends. Can I have your number? I might need it for work and other stuff".

I nodded and said "Me too, George. Sure." He handed me his mobile to enter my number.

In few minutes, I received a message from him. "Hi! It's George". With smileys and all.

Look, that's how it works! Some people wouldn't know. No, I promised myself that I wouldn't think about it again. I gave him my number and why was I acting like a teenager with a crush?

He must have known I was thinking about him. If not, why would he text at the same time? "Yo! Baby! It's Dean if you haven't figured it out already" *winking emojis*.

Really? He had the nerve to send a late text and include winking emojis?

I stopped myself from replying immediately. He shouldn't know that I was waiting for his text. Not that I was. Ok who was I kidding?

I waited for an hour to reply and in the meantime I tried to think of a good comeback. Believe me, I really tried. I couldn't come up with anything other than "Hi".

So I sent it. Just a word. Nothing else. No emojis.

I immediately got a response. "Wow! No smileys? That's harsh".

I smiled upon reading his text and realized George came to my cabin to ask something and was staring at me now.

I was embarrassed and said "Hi George. Is there anything I can help with?"

"No, I just wanted to ask you if you wanted to get coffee with the rest of us but you looked, ahem, busy".

Suddenly my phone decided to show another text notification from "The Devil". That's what I named his contact. Cute, right?

It read "Coffee today evening @ the CJs. My treat. You in?"

George cleared his throat again. "I don't want to interrupt. Maybe next time".

I smiled apologetically and said "Sure". Then I texted Dean that I was in. He asked me to meet him at the cafe at 5 pm.

Why was I smiling? He said he was new in town and wanted company. It's not like he asked me out on a d-. Wait.

I needed to stop thinking right now. Was it a date? I didnt know. Did I want it to be a date?

Maybe.

A/N: Have you ever waited for someone to text you? If Alex had Dean's number, I would have made him text asap.

Why don't YOU text first? Let's break all the rules that stand in the way of our happiness.

Diclaimer: Not the legal ones :) Don't quote me!
