Part 1
ãSorry to call so late,ã the call from Eina came on the Friday night, the night before my birthday, ãI wanted to talk about tomorrow.ã
âSure.â
ãFirst are the things you need to takeâ¦ã
âI need to take things? Donât I just need my phone?â
ãA spade is just as important.ã
âWhy?â
ãFufufu, itâs a secret. And as far as when goes, would the afternoon be okay?ã
âThatâs fine, letâs go after weâve both eaten.â
ãEating while we were on the phone would be a little rude,ã we laughed together, ãSo for the place⦠would in front of C Station be okay? Thatâs not too far from you, is it?ã
âYeah, thatâs fine. Why a spade though?â
ãI already told you that itâs a secret.ã
âThat just makes me more curious.â
ãYouâll understand tomorr⦠Ah, happy birthday!ã
âEh?â I looked at the clock and saw that the hand had ticked past midnight, âThank you.â
It was the first time Iâd been speaking with someone when my birthday arrived. When the date changed, I was normally lying dreaming in my room.
My chest feels kind of warm.
And thus, I turned seventeen.
ï¼
As I stood in front of C Station the next day, my phone buzzed in my grip.
âHello,â I said into the headset microphone.
ãHello, Shuu-san.ã
My heart began to race as I heard her voice from the earphones. I was already used to her voice, but hearing it directly in my ear made it seem like we were huddled together.
ââ¦Hey,â I calmed myself so it wouldnât show in my voice and gave a simple greeting.
We set off about the town. We went to a bookstore first, weâd chosen a famous place, on the top floor of a big department store.
âYou read fairy tales, right, Eina?â
ãI do, I love them!ã
âDo you have any recommendations?â
ãLetâs see, one that I can think of that would still be sold in five years isâ¦ã she recited the name of a famous fairy tale picture book, ãbut youâve already read it, right?ã
âI might have read it when I was small. Well, since Iâm here, Iâll buy it.â
ãThen do you have any recommendations?ã
âMaybe The Door into Summer?â I suggested.
ãAh, I havenât read that! I havenât heard of it either,ã that was unexpected, ãI wonder if itâs in the libraryâ¦ã
âItâs famous, so they should have it?â
I wondered why she wasnât buying it.
ãAh, I do know that buying it is better, but, um, I donât have much money I can use freelyâ¦ã
âAh, thatâs fine, right?â
Everyone had their own circumstances, so I didnât ask any more than that.
We carried on and were going to go and look at clothes.
ãLetâs go to Proca then!ã
Proca was a chain of fashion boutiques that were spreading throughout the country.
Butâ¦
âEh, Procaâ¦?â
I tilted my head, questioning if there was a Proca around here and then immediately realised that there was in Einaâs time, but not in mine.
âAhh, itâs a bit hard to say, but thereâs no Proca here.â
ãThereâs not? Eh!? They closed down!?ã
âYeah.â
ãNo way⦠I dreamed of going to Proca to buy things with my friendsâ¦ã
âSorry.â
I couldnât help but feel sorry for crushing her hopes.
ãNo, itâs okay, I can go to a different town to go to a Proca. But⦠what a shame⦠I really wanted to go to Proca with you and look at the clothes, have some tea in their cafe and do a lotâ¦ã
âThatâs a shame⦠letâs go for some tea for now.â
I was slightly uneasy that the cafe would have gone as well.
We went into a suitable cafe chain. We went to the same place, but the name had changed. I bought a coffee to go and sat on a bench in a nearby plaza.
âA lot changes in five years, huh?â
ãEverything changing makes me feel a bit lonely.ã
âThere are things that havenât changed.â
ãLike what?ã
âHmm, C Stationâs name?â
ãThat changing wouldnât really matter.ã
âTrue.â
ãAh, thatâs right. Speaking of things that donât change⦠Shuu-san, why was Cinderellaâs glass slipper left behind?ã I didnât really know what she was asking, so I was slow to reply, so Eina explained, ãIt was because the spell would break with the chimes of midnight, right? Cinderella was always wearing tatty clothes, so wouldnât her glass slipper have turned back into a normal one?ã
Thatâs right actually.
âIâd never thought about it.â
ãIâve always been curious about it. Iâve got a feeling that it wasnât by chance.ã
âMaybe the princeâs feelings kept the magic?â That was my first, simplest thought, âFrom the point of view of the prince, Cinderella suddenly disappearing would have been a tragedy. Right? The person he thought was the only one for him vanished, so his feelings of wanting to meet her again might have reached the glass slipper?â
However, when I finished, I began to think that that might have really been the case. I mean, if I was the prince⦠Eina would have been my Cinderella then.
Iâm sure it was painful. If I couldnât message and talk to Eina, Iâm not sure Iâd recover.
ãYouâre surprisingly romantic, arenât you?ã
âDisappointed?â
ãNo, itâs wonderful. Hmm, the princeâs feelings huh? Cinderella would be happy to meet someone that loved her so much.ã
We wandered around the town for a while. Walking around and talking to Eina was fun, but I ended up thinking about what would happen if we really metâ¦
Weâd meet in front of the station, Iâd say âHey,â and sheâd reply with âHelloâ. Then weâd walk off together, weâd walk around town for a while and go to a cafe. Eina likes sweet things, so she might ask for a parfait or something. It might be nice to go to karaoke after that. What kind of songs would she sing?
I want to go around bookstores and talk about popular books with her. Not over the phone, but with the girl in front of me.
All of that is far away from us though.
ãShuu-san? Whatâs wrong, you went quiet.ã
Einaâs voice brought me back to myself. Weâd come to a high spot and were looking over the view.
âAh, sorry, I was just thinking.â
ãJeez, donât go off on your own, it makes me lonely,ã she was pretending to be angry, but it wasnât scary at all, ãif you do that, I wonât give you your present.ã
ââ¦Present?â
ãCurious?ã
âYeah⦠Wait, how?â
ãFufufu, dig under that tree, by the base of the biggest one.ã
I followed her instructions and used the spade to dig.
The spade hit something with a dull thunk.
I moved the dirt aside and found something that looked like a sweet tin. I picked it up and opened it to see a phone strap inside, with a little, stuffed figure on the end.
The stuffed figure was the demon I had played.
âDid you make this yourself?â
ãI did. Iâm clumsy, so Iâm sorry itâs not very good, butâ¦ã
She spoke like she was ducking her head. It was a little misshapen and the stitching was rough. But I could tell this was a gift from the heart.
âNah, Iâm really happy with it. Thank you, Iâll look after it.â
ãEhehe.ã
There were five years between us. But even so, we lived on the same planet.
2
âShuu-kun, that strapâs cute, huh?â
It was about a week later on the Friday. I was sitting in the clubroom waiting for any new applicants that would never arrive, reading sluggishly. Ruka-senpai was across from me, studying.
Weâd been there for about an hour. Suddenly, she had seen my phone on the desk and asked about it.
âIt was a present, from Eina.â
âYou mean that writer?â I nodded, âDo you meet her often?â
She put her pencil down and leaned forwards, completely in gossip mode. I put my book down and looked at her.
âWeâve never actually met.â
âEh? How do you know her then? A social network?â
âYeah, something like that,â I admitted.
âMy, you younglings sure are amazing nowadays, this little old lady is ever so surprised.â
âWhatâs with that âlittle old ladyâ, youâre only a year older than me!â
âAhaha. Well, jokes aside⦠havenât you thought of meeting her? You seem to get on pretty well, wouldnât it be more fun to talk in person?â
âWe⦠canât meet. There are reasons.â
âBy that, you do want to meet.â
âEh?â
Sheâd caught me off guard, how did she know?
âIf you didnât, you wouldnât have said you canât meet, right?â She smiled gently.
ââ¦Yeah, if the circumstances werenât an issue, Iâd want to meet her.â
Weâd actually tried, but we couldnât.
She tilted her head in consideration with a thoughtful noise before suddenly asking.
âShuu-kun, you like her, donât you?â
She spoke casually, as if it was just a continuation of the conversation.
But the moment I heard her words, my heart froze.
Do I⦠like Eina
The instant I put it into words, I was conscious of everything about her, and my head went white. I couldnât say a word. Ruka-senpai looked at me in amusement and then let out a small sigh.
âI see, so I lost to someone you havenât even seen.â
ââ¦Lost?â I managed to get out. I couldnât follow the conversation.
âDonât worry about it, I was talking to myself. Hey, if you like her, you need to meet her and let her know how you feel. Youâll definitely regret it if not.â
âThereâs a lot of reasons we canât.â
âBut you like her, right?â
ââ¦I do,â I admitted.
I thought it would be nice to have her at my side when I was preparing for the cultural festival. When we were talking on my birthday, I really did want her beside me, and when I received my present, I really wanted her to have given it to me in person. Iâm sure I thought like that because I liked her.
âYou want to be sure who she is, right?â
ââ¦I do,â I said again, after a longer pause this time.
âRight, then your wonderful Senpai will help. So, why canât you meet?â
âWill you listen without laughing? Iâm⦠going to say something that sounds unbelievable,â Iâd already given up, Iâd tell her everything. I might have lost my normal judgement, but impulses are an important part of life, âEina doesnât actually live in the present, sheâs from five years ago. I donât know how, but my phone is connected to that time and I can talk with her.â
Her expression was amazing at my words, her mouth was slightly agape and it looked like her mind had shut down.
âSorry, can you say that one more time?â
âIâll say it over and over, Eina lives in the past. I live in the present, so we canât actually meet.â
âIâm just checking, but thatâs not just an excuse youâre giving me, right?â
âSee, you donât believe me.â
âOi, donât sulk. Whoâd believe something like that right away! Ah! I donât mean I donât believe you, just let me think,â she said, and folded her arms. ââ¦Well, it fits I guess. Youâre hiding the truth about Eina because you donât think anyone will believe you if you said anything?â
âThatâs about right.â
âGot it. I believe you. Youâre not one to make up strange lies anyway,â she said and smiled at me, and it felt like a load had been taken off my back, âthen why canât you meet her from now? Though it does mean making her wait for five years.â
âThatâs because Eina doesnât want to meet me five years from when she is, she doesnât want to know her future.â
âHmmm, Iâd just be interested in what happened to me in the future.â
âEina is pessimistic so she thinks her future might be worse and is scared of knowing it. She thinks I wouldnât hide it if something terrible had happened to her, so she asked not to meet.â
âI see.â
She nodded.
âAnd so, I really respect her for it, butâ¦â
âBut you want to meet her, right?â
âRight.â
âThen our goal is to find out who Eina is without her knowing, and go and meet her,â then she slumped, âbut how do we do that?â
âI donât know either.â
âWe need some help.â
I only knew one person knowledgeable about things like that. The newspaper clubâs ace, Sakai. He was skilled at gathering information, so he should be able to find her.
Part 3
âFinding someone? Leave it to me,â Sakai nodded once we went to his clubroom and explained things to him, âI have a condition though, Iâd like to print an interview with Eina-chan.â
âEh, I canât say yes without her permission.â
âThatâs impossible, right? Weâre searching for her without her knowing after all,â Ruka-senpai supported me.
Sakai paused for thought before continuing.
âThen promise me that youâll persuade her. Obviously I donât want you to pressure her, she doesnât need to give a picture, just the interview is fine. Sheâs so famous after all, her debut work captured the gossip of the entire school and her play made the cultural festival what it was! If we can get an exclusive interview, weâll be known throughout the world!â
Sakai was practically frothing at the mouth and I was lost. The interview would be dependent on Eina, soâ¦
âShuu-kun, you can just say okay for now,â Ruka-senpai gave me a strained smile, âyouâve got a serious personality, so you might worry about it.â
âOkay, Iâll try and persuade her.â
âTa, ta, then letâs get while the gettingâs good, letâs start,â Sakai put a tablet on the desk, ââEinaâ is her internet handle, right?â
âProbably.â
âThen letâs check places like Twitter.â
I was surprised I hadnât thought of it myself actually. Iâd rushed off wanting to meet her, but hadnât thought things through myself.
Sakai put âEinaâ in the search field and about ten accounts showed up on the screen.
âHuh, thereâs quite a few,â Ruka-senpai muttered in wonder.
âRoughly half of them are foreigners, so itâs probably one of these two,â While Sakai spoke, he opened tabs for both usersâ timelines, âSo? Anything look familiar? Or anything that matches something she said?â
âAh!â I pointed at the one, âThis might be her. She wrote about last week.â
Eina @eina002
Iâm going out with S-san tomorrow.
Eina @eina002
I got his present ready.
Eina @eina002
Iâmsonervous!
âS-san is you?â
âProbablyâ¦â
I scrolled a little further.
Eina @eina002
I canât⦠write the script⦠Iï½âï½ï½ãï½ï½ ï½.
Eina @eina002
S-san praised me for the script! Iâm so happy!
Eina @eina002
I saw the play! S-san was so cool!
âEina-chanâs so sweet.â
âIâm sort of jealous.â
Sakai and Ruka-senpai said respectively from my sides, and I knew my face had gone red as well.
âAnyway, this is most likely her account. What do we do next then?â
I feigned calmness and asked.
âWe analyse her tweets and look for personal information,â Sakai slid his finger over the screen, whizzing through the timeline, âOh, she uses a normal blog too, letâs have a look.â
He opened it up in a separate window and several entries, more detailed than the tweets, were shown on the screen.
âRejoice, Yagi. Eina-chan is awfully net illiterate.â
âWhy would I rejoice about that?â I grew uneasy.
âItâs good news for finding her. For example, take this pictureâ¦â he expanded a picture of a cherry tree, it was a pretty picture, with the tree in full bloom with pink flowers, âthis picture still has GPS data in it. And the titleâs âA snap from near homeâ. That lets us know that she lives near a cherry tree. The address isâ¦â he pulled up the location on a map, it was one station down from C Station, and seemed rather rural.
âSo thatâs how a stalker finds someoneâ¦â Ruka-senpai backed away from him.
âHey, Ruka-senpai! I wonât abuse this! Right, Yagi?â
âSorry, I think itâs stalker-ish as well.â
âSo mean! Youâre the same then!â
âShuu-kun is different! Theyâre in love!â
âKuh⦠Whatâs with this discrimination!?â Sakai ground his teeth. âThis wonât stop me⦠This is all for an interview with Eina-chanâ¦!â
He really was putting the effort in, and I decided to do my best to ask her for an interview as well.
âThereâs a lot of pictures, letâs text-mine her tweets⦠Oh, a sports day at elementary school? Thereâs only one school with a sports day then, so⦠Oh! She uploaded a picture from a window!!â Sakai left us behind for a while, immersing himself in the internet, and thenâ¦
âThis is probably where she lives,â he pointed at a house on the street view. It would take about half an hour to get there, we could probably check it out. âIt looks like itâs the Yokota familyâs house. Five years ago, they had a middle schooler and an elementary schooler. I donât know about now though. Eina-chan doesnât have any posts since October five years ago, so I canât narrow it down any more. Maybe she got better habits after that.â
âThis⦠is Einaâs houseâ¦â I shook as I looked at the picture, âThank you, really. I didnât think youâd find her so quickly.â
âIâm going to be a journalist, so that much was a piece of cake,â Sakai proclaimed proudly.
âCareful not to get killed if you stick your neck too far into some politicianâs corruptionâ¦â
âIâd be happy to be involved in something so big!â
Ruka-senpai seemed genuinely worried, but Sakai brushed her concerns aside triumphantly.
âSo, what do we do next?â I asked.
âWe go and check. We havenât done anything to be guilty of.â
Sakai declared confidently.
No, we really have though, I thought worriedly.
Part 4
It was the next day, Saturday, and Ruka-senpai, Sakai, and I were headed to the Yokota residence.
I bought some sweets in front of C Station.
âWhatâd you buy in the end?â Asked Sakai.
âEina likes sweet things, so some dorayaki,â I answered him.
âYou really love her,â said Ruka-senpai, and my cheeks flushed.
We got off the train at the next station and walked for five minutes through the quiet suburbs before arriving at the Yokota house.
I stood in front of their intercom and took a deep breath.
Ruka-senpai and Sakai both took a step back and waited for me, not urging me to push the button.
Slowly, I stretched out my finger to the button.
I wonder what she looks like?
What shape are her eyebrows?
What colour are her eyes?
I wonder if sheâs pale or tanned.
Is she tall or short?
How long is her hair?
What colour is it?
She was always smiling, what was her smile like?
I pushed the button.
A pleasant chime rang out.
ãYes?ã
An adult womanâs voice answered.
âIs there an Eina-san there?â
ãEinaâ¦?ã
The woman seemed confused.
Was it pointless asking after her handle? She might not have told her family the name she used.
Or do we have the wrong place?
Maybe sheâs already moved because five years have passed.
ãDid she write a story?ã
âYes! She did!â
I leaned forwards.
However, the speaker fell silent. ãIâm sorry to say so, but she isnât here.ã
âSheâs not? Did she move?â
ãUmm, wait a moment.ã
The speaker buzzed as it turned off, and after a while, a woman came out. She looked to be around twenty. Her gaze was sharp, and she seemed like a rather cold woman.
She gave a small bow.
âIâm Einaâs cousin. Itâs nice to meet her friends.â
âItâs good to meet you too.â
I greeted her in turn, wondering to myself if this was the cousin that had bullied her.
âPlease, letâs talk inside.â
She invited us in, and all three of us entered the house, she showed us to the living room and we sat down on the sofa.
âTo put it bluntly, Eina is dead.â
What did she
I tried to ask her, but all that came out was a strangled sound of questioning.
The shock had closed up my throat, and I couldnât speak.
âEina went up the hill at the back of our house during a storm five years ago and didnât come back. Sheâs still missing. But thereâs probably no hope after five years, and weâve given up,â said her cousin with a grave expression.
I was just aghast, staring at her face.
âThinking about it now, I think I did something I shouldnât have. I was always treating her badly⦠But she was always just shutting herself away in her room, and just using other peopleâs things. Then there were the arguments with mama and papa, and the worryâ¦â
She began to cry as she spoke.
Ruka-senpai said something to her, and Sakai gave some kind of response as well.
I watched it all dazedly, their voices sounding distant.
A single phrase was just repeating itself in my head.
Eina had died.
Diedâ¦
Died!
ãBut Iâm scared. Scared to know my future. I mean⦠What if Iâm dead after five years?ã
I remembered Einaâs words.
âIt canât be trueâ¦â made its way from my mouth. âIt canât be trueâ¦!!â
