In the chairmanâs office.
âHereâs the medical certificate from the hospital,â Ethan slammed a copy of the medical record on the table. âA student from your school named Kyle attacked me, a patient whoâs nearly on his deathbed.â
His voice rose, filled with righteous indignation, âIs there no justice left? No law?â
The chairmanâs face turned ashen, his eyes signaling the school doctor to check the document.
Kyle, his head wrapped in gauze and his face flushed a deep red, pointed to his head, âYouâre full of it! You attacked me! Hit me on the head with an iron rod!â
âWhy donât you just say I hit you with a giant hammer,â Ethan scoffed, walking towards Kyle.
Kyle had been shouting fiercely, but seeing Ethan approach, he clenched his fists, his face contorted with anger.
Ethan pulled out his phone and snapped a photo of them standing together, showing it to the chairman, âLook at us standing side by side. Who looks more oppressive? If I send this to the reporters, the public can see clearly.â
In the photo, the menacing 6-foot-5 Kyle stood in stark contrast to Ethanâs slender frame.
The chairmanâs expression grew even darker.
âAlso, just now, I heard many students say Kyle is your nephew, right?â Ethan narrowed his eyes, âLet me think about tomorrowâs headlines: âChairmanâs nephew beats critically ill patient over a man~â or âEducator shields nephew, frames helpless patient for beating a robust 6-foot-5 man.â I canât even imagine how sensational that would be.â
âYou⦠Iâm going to fight you!â Kyle, fists clenched, charged at him.
The next second, the wound on his head burst open, and blood seeped through the white gauze.
âEnough!â The chairman slammed his desk, stopping his nephew with a deadly glare. Kyle, holding his wound, didnât dare move.
The school doctor leaned in and whispered to the chairman, âThe copy is authentic.â
The chairman took a deep breath, staring at Ethan, âWhat do you want?â
Abigaile stood by, having followed Ethan closely after he made his move, worried he might be at a disadvantage. Seeing all this, she was stunned.
This was shameless, and even more, it was a successful threat.
âSimple,â Ethan leaned on the desk, âIâm a friend of Logan, and I need to investigate something about Lily. I hope the school will cooperate fully.â
The chairman, taken aback, nodded, âOkay.â
âDeal.â Ethan extended his hand. In this country, there are protections for minors, making it difficult even for police to investigate students.
If the school didnât want to escalate the issue and was inclined to protect someone, things could get complicated.
Ethan withdrew his hand, giving Kyle a look that said, âIâm going to see your girlfriend, what can you do about it?â
âYou!!!â Kyleâs bandage split again, and under his uncleâs murderous gaze, he could only glare resentfully.
âBye now~â Ethan left the office with Abigaile.
It was after school hours.
The setting sun bathed the school, most students had left, and only one remained on the field practicing pole vaulting.
âWere we too harsh just now?â Abigaile removed her sunglasses, there were no other people around, and she didnât want to keep wearing them.
Even as a bystander, she felt Ethan was excessively ruthless.
âHmm, I just hoped heâd lose it and hit me,â Ethan looked up to see Lily standing timidly not far down the corridor, leaning against the wall. Seeing him come out, she quickly bowed her head.
âCut to the chase,â Ethan waved his hand to interrupt her, âI just want to ask you one question, what exactly is your relationship with Mr. Logan.â
âThe principal has agreed to let me continue this investigation, so please donât lie to me.â
He didnât use any threatening words.
The image of him emotionlessly smashing Kyleâs head on the basketball court was still vivid, and anyone who had seen that scene would instinctively fear him.
Lily lowered her head, unable to meet his gaze, âHe was a senior when I worked at the convenience store.â
âJust a senior?â Ethan pressed.
âNo,â Lily said unemotionally, shaking her head, âHe just occasionally helped me out.â
âHave you had any contact outside of work?â Ethan continued, âHe said you were bullied at school and he would walk you home every night, is that true?â
âNo contact outside of work,â Lily shook her head, âI wasnât bullied. At school, Iâve always been close to Kyle. Weâve known each other since we were kids, like childhood sweethearts.â
âWhy did you quit your job at the convenience store?â Ethanâs gaze lingered on her.
Her chest had curves, and if she wasnât padding, then she must be taking hormones, which are quite expensive.
âKyle helped me out when he knew what I was going through,â Lily answered.
âHelp? Like money?â Ethan narrowed his eyes.
âYes.â
âSo, did you guys ever sleep together or anything like that?â
âNo,â Lilyâs voice remained calm. âWe are in a serious relationship with the intention of getting married.â
Ethan looked puzzled.
âDing ding ding.â
His phone suddenly rang.
Ethan answered the call, and Jessicaâs frantic voice came through: âEthan, are you at the hospital? Iâm about to go talk to Mr. Logan~â
âHey, why are you telling me about your meeting with Logan?â
âEven though heâs in the hospital right now, weâre not taking any drastic measures, but if he admits to harassment, this case could be charged as sexual harassment.â
ââ¦â Ethan squinted, a thought suddenly crossing his mind.
Was he being used by Officer Jessica?
âAlright, Iâll be right there.â
He hung up, took Lilyâs number, picked up Abigaile, and drove back to the hospital.
At the hospital room door, Ethan saw Jessica in her police uniform, looking sharp and smiling at him.
âLetâs go, Ethan.â
The three of them entered the hospital room together.
Logan was sitting in the room, lost in thought. Seeing Jessica, a shadow passed over his eyes, but when he saw Ethan, there was a glimmer of hope.
âMr. Logan, I hope you can cooperate with my investigation,â Jessica pulled out a notebook and pen. âYou think youâre truly in love, what makes you say that?â
After a long silence, Logan looked up, âItâs the feeling when weâre together.â
âDid you ever say things like âI like youâ to each other?â Jessica took notes quickly.
âHeâs still in high school, those kinds of things donât need to be said out loud,â Logan lowered his head, then looked up firmly, âHe said being with me made him feel relaxed and happy!â
âI asked Lily,â Jessica closed her notebook. âHe said he doesnât remember saying any romantic phrases.â
Loganâs expression instantly dimmed.
âAh,â Ethan shook his head from the sidelines, it seemed he might just have to make Lily fall for him.
Suddenly, he felt a hand tugging at the hem of his shirt.
Abigaile seemed hesitant to speak.
