Chapter 210
âElder Randy!â Janet cried./
Glass slipped from his fingers.
The next second, the manâs large body was crushed down to the ground with a loud bang.
There was a moment of aghast silence.
Then somebody from the crowd let out a sudden scream of terror, â-Ahhh!!!â Janet jumped over the table and dropped down by Elder Randyâs side.
She quickly examined him.
His face was pale like a piece of paper. His breathing was labored as though his throat was clogged. And his body trembled as though having a seizure-
âHe is poisoned!â Janet yelled.
Elder Pierre gasped and tossed his glass on the ground. Beer spilled over the grass. The grass began to smoke and withered within seconds!
âSomebody helps him!â Elder Pierre screams.
Janet tore the manâs collar open to help him better breathe. Her hands were slightly shaking in panic.
She couldnât feel his pulse anymore!
A steady hand caught her wrist.
âI got this,â Westin whispered to her urgently.
He knelt and tilted Elder Randyâs head backward and lifted his chin to open airway.
Then he started compressing the manâs chest and gave him rescue breaths.
He carried on for a couple of rounds.
Elder Randy took an abrupt inhale of breath.
âIt worked!â Elder Pierre gasped in thrill.
the
Janet put a finger underneath the manâs nose. She could now feel a faint airflow. âWe should get him to the hospital!â Janet said loudly.
âGuards!â Westin snapped.
A group of guards rushed over and lifted Elder Randy off the ground.
The crowd quickly parted for them to come through. There was a horrified look on every guestâs face.
Westin wiped the sweat on his forehead with a grim look, âI should be at the hospital
as well.â
âI am coming with you,â Janet said.
The two of them hurried across the garden. The once lively dance floor had lapsed into a complete mess.
This yearâs Spring Ball ended on a very hasty and chaotic note.
When Janet and Westin arrived at the clinic room in the castle, Elder Randy had already been taken into the emergency room.
Doctors and nurses surrounded the bed, examining Elder Randyâs condition.
Moments later, a doctor walked up to Westin, âWe just did an initial exam of Elder Randy⦠He was indeed poisoned.â
Janet clenched her fists.
One of the senior elders got poisoned right under the nose of their King and with everyone watching.
This was huge!
Whoever did this has a lot of guts.
âIs he going to make it?â Westin asked.
The doctor hesitated, âWe are taking his blood sample to the laboratory to identify which poison it isâ¦But I am afraid that we canât develop a cure for him in time-
âThen you will try!â Westin snapped, âI have got the best doctors in the Lycanâs world in this very room, and you are telling me that you donât have the cure? Unacceptable!â
The doctor winced, intimidated by Westinâs aura.
âTâThere are very few poisons that can do this level of damage to a Lycan. I am afraid we have to study this poison from scratch before developing a cure. Yet Elder Randyâs liver is failing. I am afraid that there is simply not enough timeâ¦.
Westin looked enraged, âHow long does he have?â
âIn the best scenario, days. But liver failure can happen in minutes. So Elder Randy mightâ¦any secondsâ¦â
Westin threw a punch at the wall, looking furious.
His most trusted elder got poisoned right in front of him.
Yet he couldnât save him.
âI donât care!â He huffed at the doctor with bloodshot eyes, âYou will save him. That is an order from the King!â
The doctor trembled on his
spot
Just then, the monitor attached to Elder Randyâs body gave off a sharp noise and the nurse screamed, His blood pressure is dropping!â
âHeart failure!â
âHurry do somethingâwe are losing him!â
There was a lot of commotion in the clinic room.
Just then, a group of people bust in through the door. Most of them were elders. Rushing upfront was Agnes, holding a small bottle of liquid in her hand.
âIâI have the cure!â she shrieked.
She shoved the bottle into one of the nursesâ hands, âHurry! Give this to Elder Randy!â
The nurse grabbed the bottle urgently and shut the curtain, beginning the emergency treatment.
âWhy do you have the cure?â Westin asked in astonishment.
Agnes wiped her teary eyes and wept, âKeavy died of food poisoning, remember? Ever since he died, I have been carrying a bottle of cure with me whenever I go. Oh god, poor Elder Randyâ¦â
âBut you canât promise that your cure is effective for Elder Randyâs poison, right?â asked an elder dressed in a grey cloak.
Janet remembered this elder. Elder Lamonte.
She met him once in the dining hall on her first night here.
Agnes shook her head, âNo, fatherâ¦
âThen we should find the criminal who poisoned Randy! And ask the criminal for the cure!â said Elder Lamonte boomingly.
Westin nodded, âI will have the soldiers search the garden right away and see if the security camera captured anyone suspicious-â
âYou can do that. But I think the criminal is right by our side.â
Elder Lamonte let out a cold laugh, his eyes gleaming maliciously, âFor exampleâ¦Her.â
An astonished gasp could be heard from the crowd.
lanet rounded her eyes.
â¦Elder Lamonte was pointing at her?
Was he fucking crazy?!
âThis is nonsense-â she huffed.
âCareful, Elder Lamonte!â Westin hissed darkly, âThat is my Queen you are pointing at!â
Lamonte putted his chest arrogantly, âI am perfectly aware. But she is the one who carried this barrel of beer into the venue. Everyone saw her bringing it in. She is the best suspect!â
âThat is your big reason?â Janet snapped, âI was simply helping out a maid who couldnât lift that barrel-â
âWhere is this maid then? Nobody saw her,â Lamonte pressed.
Janet snapped her head to Westin, âYou saw that maid, right? When you walked up behind me?
Westin hesitated..
ââ¦You told me that you were helping a maid. But I didnât see her with my own eyes,â
he said.
Janet couldnât believe this.
The maid was standing right by her side!
How could he not see her?
âThen where is Annie? Lady Annie saw the maid!â Janet snapped.
âAnnie came with me. Let me go get her,â Agnes said.
She left the clinic room and was back with Annie seconds later.
âAnnie, you saw the maid with the barrel, right?â Janet asked in an urgent voice.
Annie held her head down, trembling like a leave in the wind.
I donât know what you are talking about, Lady Janetâ¦â she said in a whisper.
Janet froze on her spot.
âWhat?â she stuttered in a trance, âYou noticed that maid first. You even said to me that this maid would be punished by her supervisor laterâ¦How can you not remember?â
Annie said nothing and simply shook her head hastily.
Agnes rounded one arm around Annieâs shoulder and gently patted her back, âIt is OK Annie. You said the truth. You are a brave girl.â
Janet snarled, âWhat truth! This is a fucking lie-
âLady Janet!â
Agnes raised her head and looked at Janet with watery eyes:
âCursing and scaring this poor girl wonât make your crime disappear.
Maybeâ¦maybe you should own up to it when there is still a chance and save Elder Randyâs life. I am sure the King will be merciful with your punishment.â
Janet stood perfectly still.
A chill was sent down her spine.
She suddenly understood what was going on.
â¦This was a trap.
Carefully designed for her.
She couldnât be sure earlierâ¦but Annieâs lie confirmed everything.
Annie lied to frame her.
And how had the power to manipulate Annie?
Janet glared at Agnes with cold eyes.
Seconds later, she turned to Westin, âDo you believe in me
Westinâs jaw tensed.
â¦You have a motive,â he said sullenly.
She wanted to punch him in the face, âWhat fucking motive?! I just met the man. You introduced him to me, remember?!â
Westin leaned in and whispered in a voice that was only audible to the two of them, âLet me guess. Do you think that killing one of my elders will free you from our deal? My people will never accept a criminal as Queen. Is that what you think?â
Janet found his theory so absurd that she almost laughed, âIs that what YOU think?!â
Westin looked straight into her eyes, âYes. Because you are that smart to me. Hand over the cure and I can still protect you from the other elders. Orâ¦you are on your own this time.â
Janet balled her fists, body shaking in rage.
How could she hand over the cure that didnât exist?
But she didnât have any proof of her innocence.
So what should she do now?
Fought back?
Or own up to the crime she didnât commit?
Right at this extremely tense moment, a voice came from outside of the room
-HOLD ON! I have a witness!!!
