Chapter 212
âThe patient is stabilized now,â the doctor said.
âBut he hasnât woken up yet?â
âNo,â the doctor shook his head. âLady Agnesâs cure only kept him from going into a complete heart and liver failure. But to completely recover, he needs the actual cure for the poison.â
Westin balled his hands into fists, âThank you, doctor. How much time does Elder Randy have?â
âHard to say. Our best guess is weeks. But I would say the sooner the better.â
âSo we still need the cure.â Elder Lamonte said darkly. âLady Janet, stop fighting with us and hand over the cure. The manâs life is at stake here!â
âI said! I have nothing to do with this!â Janet snarled.
Westin raised a hand in the air, gesturing them to keep quiet.
âThat is enough.â he said in a commanding voice, âYou have both made your point. No point keep arguing about it.â
Elder Lamonte licked his teeth with his tongue, revealing an ugly grin, âMy King, ifâ you can grant me the permission to interrogate this werewolf woman, I am sure I can force her to hand over the cure before tomorrowâs sun risesâ¦â
âNo!â Wells cried angrily, âYou canât let him, brother! You know that he will torture Janet-â
âSilent!â
Westin snapped, pointing a finger at Wells, âWe will talk about how you skipped the ball tonight and how you discarded the princeâs duty later. Now just keep your mouth shut. And as for you, Elder Lamonte-
He turned to look at Lamonte, his eyes darkened, ââ¦No one will interrogate my Queen.â
âBut my King-â
âHave I not made myself clear?â Westin narrowed his eyes.
Elder Lamonte swallowed.
He still looked indignant.
But he decided to keep his mouth shut, ââ¦You have, my king, perfectly clear.â
âGood.â
Westinâs eyes fell on Sammy, âNow Sammy. I want you to think very hard about the maid that bumped into you. Was it her?â
He pointed at Janet.
Sammy took a quick look at Janet and then looked down, ââ¦No.â
âThen was it anyone in this room?â
Sammy shook her head quietly.
âOK. Then what does she look like?â
Sammy bit her lips, pondering, âIâ¦it was very dark in the hallway, so I didnât get a clear lookâ¦I think she is about average height, slim, and has porcelain skinâ¦â
People exchanged baffled looks with each other.
Many maids working in this castle fit that profile.
Sammyâs words
ut them nowhere.
Janet was also thinking hard at this moment.
â¦What did the maid look like when she met her?
The maid kept her head down on purpose. So like Sammy, she didnât remember the maidâs face.
The only thing she could remember was the maidâs hairâ¦sliding down from behind. her ears and covering her face like a curtainâ¦
Right.
Her hair!
âThe maid that I met has chestnut hair,â Janet raised her head and said. âYes, chestnut hair!â Sammy clapped her hands together immediately, âI remember now! The woman I saw has chestnut hair as well! They must be the same person!â
One of the elders gave Sammy a skeptical look, âAre you making this up simply to echo with Lady Janet?â
Sammy winced.
Yet Wells stood up immediately to defend her, âSammy said that she saw it. Then she must have seen it!â
The elder roiled his eyes but didnât argue back.
âAverage height, slim figure, porcelain skin, and chestnut hairâ¦â Wells rubbed his chin, âWait. Isnât that Kalinda?â
âPrince Wells, are you listening to yourself?!â one of the elders cried. âKalinda is a lady! And we are talking about a maid!â
âPrince Wells, we know that you are not a big fan of House of Shadows. But you canât smear our house member like this,â said Elder Lamonte grimly.
Wells shrugged, âFine. I saw just sayingâ¦â
Janet raised an eyebrow.
Funny because Kalinda did meet with those descriptions.
Yet, unfortunately, that woman was not Kalinda, or she would have recognized her.
She looked to Agnes, and Elder Lamonte behind her back.
Whoever the maid was, she was certain that the House of Shadowâespecially Elder Lamonte had something to do with everything.
They wanted her gone.
As much as she hated to be trapped in here as well, she would not let these Lycans trample her.
She WOULD get to the bottom of this.
Game on.
âI will ask the soldiers to search the castle for people meeting the profile and conduct a thorough investigation. You are dismissed now,â Westin said deeply.
People bowed and filed out of the room one by one.
Janet turned to leave as well.
âJanetâ¦â
She heard Westin calling her behind her back.
Yet she didnât stop her pace for him.
She ran into the hallway and caught up with Sammy and Wells.
âHey, Sammy!â
She got to Sammyâs side and gave her a smile, âI want to thank you for standing up for me like that. It means a lot to me.â
âDâ¦Donât be.â Sammy shook her head, âIt was Prince Wells. He encouraged me to come forwardâ¦â
Janet looked to Wells, âOf course. Thank you so much.â
âHey, donât be!â Wells waved his hand, grinning brightly. âWe are all sick of Agnes. As long as there is a fight against her, just count me in!â
Janet smiled.
Wells reminded her of Kass, only that this young prince had a more bubbly personality.
âWhat do you hate her?â she asked.
âGod! Just look at her fake tears, unnatural manners, and superficial personalityâ¦Everybody hates her. Donât you hate her, Sammy?â
Sammy murmured in a small voice, âYea⦠No, I am not supposed to comment on the mastersâ¦â
âShe hates her,â Wells confirmed. âAnyway, my brother is fooled by her. He has a soft spot for pretty women. But you are here now. You are his mate and a thousand times prettier than Agnes. I am sure you can turn his silly mind around!
Janet was swept away by his enthusiasm and couldnât help but smile, âI donât know, Wells. Westin seems to think very highly of Agnes-â
âThen you should rescue him from the evils, like a real heroine.â Wells said and then suddenly clapped his hands together, âOh you know what we should do?!â
Janet blinked in a daze, ââ¦What?â
âI have a perfect idea!â Wells cried, looking very excited, âI will find you in your room tomorrow morning! It is a date. Donât go anywhere!â
He blew her a kiss before running away with Sammy.
Janet smiled.
Maybe she could make friends in the Lycanâs Kingdom.
Janet slept in the next morning.
At last, she didnât have to go to that tiresome ladyâs training and she could finally relax.
Yet a sudden, hurried knock on the door woke her up.
It was Wells outside of the door..
âWhy are you still in your pajamas?â he cried as soon as he saw her, âI told you we have a date.â
Janet rubbed her eyes, still halfâasleep, ââ¦You didnât tell me where we are going.â
âBelle, you are in charge of her makeover,â Wells said in a commanding voice, which strikingly resembled his elder brother.
A petite girl stuck her head out from Wellsâs back, âMorning Janet!â
She had blonde, curly hair and crystal blue eyes, something that was carried in the family DNA.
âYou are Westinâs sister?â Janet asked.
âMy twin sister, Belle.â Wells dragged the two of them into Janetâs room and urged, âHurry. We donât have much time!â
Donât have much time for what?â Tanot aclzed
âDonât have much time for what?â Janet asked.
Yet neither one of the twins answered.
Belle wrenched her closet door open and started laying out clothes and accessories. on the bed for a match, while her twin brother walked around the room, looking at everything with a critical eye.
âThis is the room Westin gave you?â he tsked, âAs his Queen, you should be living in a grand suite, with your bed made of gold and walls adorned with diamond!â âWestin is so stupid,â Belle rolled her eyes, measuring an Ivory dress on Janet.
âA total dickhead.â Wells agreed, âHow much longer, Belle?â
âAlmost ready!â
Belle shoved a dress, a pair of high heels, and some accessories into Janetâs arms and pushed her into the bathroom, âGo change, Janet. Hurry!â
Janet still had no clue of what these two were up to.
As soon as she finished dressing, the twins yanked her out of her room and took her rushing down the hallway.
âThâThank god you are pretty and donât need any makeup,â Belle said between breaths, running by her side. âI envy your rosy lipsâ¦â
âSave your breath!â Wells hissed.
âCan somebody tell me where we are going?â Janet groaned.
They didnât stop until they reached the courtyard garden on the ground floor.
The courtyard garden flourished in a riot of colors and fragrances.
Delicate blossoms adorned the landscape like a vibrant tapestry, weaving hues of pink, purple, and white.
A gentle breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming flowers, while the soothing melodies of harp and violin filled the air.
Under the shade of an ancient willow tree, a group of ladies were gathered for an elegant tea party.
There was Agnes of course, and the rest of her little gang.
