Chapter 55
Janetâs hand froze on the doorknob.
spot.
She heard that woman saying to Daran in a sweet voice, âAlpha, donât you ever get tired from all these works? The day is beautiful outside. Letâs go for a picnic. Or go hunting in the forest.â
âI have works to do.â
Daranâs voice was cold. But he didnât push that woman away.
âYou shouldnât be here in the first place, Salvia. Why didnât my guards stop you?â
Salvia giggled and leant in even closer, âYour guards know that we are intimate. They walked away when I came in to give us some space. Come on, Daran, donât be a buzzkill. You know we have a better way of spending this afternoonâ¦A much better wayâ¦â
Her hand traveled down Daranâs chest as she spoke and tried to unbutton his shirt.
Daran grabbed her hand forcefully.
Janet couldnât watch anymore. If she didnât go in there, the two might start doing it right on the desk soon.
So she flung the door open with a quick sharp movement.
The noise startled the woman named Salvia. She jerked around looking at Janet and snapped, âWhy didnât you knock! The Alpha is busy!â
Janet raised her eyebrow, âBusy with work? Or busy banging you?â
Salvia seemed furious, âWho the hell are you!â
âJanet.â
Daran rose from his chair hastily looking at Janet. He seemed pleased to see her here.
âAre you here to see me?â he asked.
âThat depends.â Janet shrugs, glancing at Salvia. âAm I interrupting?â
âNo. Of course not,â Daran said firmly.
Then he turned to SalvÃa, who was glaring at Janet hostilely, and demanded, âLeave us, Salvia.â
âNo! I am not leaving you with her!â Salvia cried.
She darted a look at Janet and gritted, âI know who you are. You are Daranâs ex.
Didnât he reject you already? What are you still doing here? Begging him to take you back?â
âEnough Salvia!â Daran snapped.
Yet Salvia was still yammering, âYou were rejected by him once already. You are basically damaged good! If you still have any sense of selfârespect, you should stay away from him as far as possible!â
Janet surveyed Salvia from head to toe.
Frankly speaking, this woman was very beautiful, even more so than Harper. She also had a very nice body, the kind that could easily attract menâs attention on the
street.
âIf you
know my name, you should also know that I am Blood Moon Packâs Gamma and princess.â
Janet let out a cold sneer looking at her.
âYou should bow to me and keep your voice low while talking to me. It is the most basic upperâsociety courtesy. Have you learnt nothing back in school?â
Salviaâs face went red in rage.
âI am a noble myself!â she cried, âI donât need to bow to you!â
âThat is enough! You are crossing the line here, Salvia.â Daran snarled, raising his voice. âGuards!â
With a series of hurried footsteps, two guards rushed into the room.
Daran said to them coldly, âEscort Miss Salvia out. And if you ever let people into my
study without my permission, all of you will be fired.â
Guards quivered under his sharp gaze and dragged Salvia out immediately.
Janet waited for them to close the door before asking Daran, âDo I have your permission to stay, Alpha Daran?â
âOf course!â
Daran walked around the table to her and said, âLook, about Sylvia-
âI am not here to talk about your personal life, Alpha Daran.â Janet cut him off sharply, âIt is about Baron.â
A furrow appeared between Daranâs brows.
âWhat did he do now?â he asked.
Janet told him everything that happened this morning outside of the training field and then added, âI canât go to war with these people, and certainly not with Owen. If you refused to replace Baron and Owen, I am afraid that the Blood Moon Pack will have to back down from this alliance.â
Daran breathed out a heavy sigh, âI understand your frustration, Janet. But it isnât that easy. Baronâs family is very influential.â
âEven more influential than the Alpha?â Janet asked sarcastically.
Daran pretended that he didnât notice Janetâs sarcastic tone and said, âBaronâs fatherâthe former Gammaâwas a very respected warrior. He died in the battlefield fighting rogues, heroically. He was Riverside Packâs soldierâs icon. If I take his son
Baron down without a legitimate reason, the public will get mad.â
This piece of information was new to Janet.
âSo you are just going to sit around and let Baron corrupt your army?â Janet asked with a frown, âBecause let me tell you, Baron is nothing like his father. He is a weak puss. And he is fully capable of turning you over to the rogues in exchange of his own life. I assure you that.â
âI am fully aware of that. Let me show you something.â
Daran pulled a piece of paper out of the deck of files on his desk and handed it to Janet, âWe have 50% of our annual budget going into the army. Yet the account doesnât check out. My Minister of Finance and I suspect Baron of pocketing that money himself.â
Janet scanned through the paper.
Daran was right.
More than 5 billion were allocated to the army this year. Yet 80% of that money got vanished in the thin air.
âIf you can prove this, you have a legitimate reason to remove Baron,â Janet said.
âExactly.â
Daran nodded.
âI am just having trouble getting my hands on Baronâs account book. I am actually thinking about issuing a warrant to search his house. We are moving closer to the day of the dispatch. The sooner we take care of Baron, the better it is.â
Janet pondered on that for a moment.
âHold that thought on the warrant. I donât think he keeps that account book in his house. It is too risky.â
âThen do you have a better idea?â
Janet looked at him with a smile, âNot an idea. A person, Maxie. She might happen to
know everything about Baronâs shady deals but doesnât dare to say anything
because of Baronâs power. Let me talk to her today.â
She gave the paper back to Daran and walked towards the door.
Yet Daran stopped her again, âDonât you want to know who Sylvia is?â
Janet stopped by the door.
She looked over her shoulder and sneered, âLet me guessâ¦She is Baronâs sister, isnât she?â
She and Baron had the exact same eyes, and a huge ego.
The similarity was striking.
âThat is right,â Daran said with a nod. âBaron had sensed my dissatisfaction towards him and sent his sister over to put in some good words for him. When we get rid of Baron, I can finally get some peace in my study as well.â
âNo need to explain. Again, not interested in your personal life,â Janet shrugged. She paused.
And then couldnât help but added to that acidly, âBut you do strike people as the easily manipulated type. Or why does everyone keep sending their female family member to you side?â
First Harperâ¦then Sylvia.
Did they ever stop?
There was a small smile on Daranâs lips.
He didnât seem mad.
Amusement gleamed in his eyes as he asked in a hoarse voice:
âSo when does Alpha Casper planning on sending his female family member to me? I promise I wonât push her away this time like what I did to Sylvia and Harper.â
â
Janet felt her face went red.
âDonât flatter yourself!â she snarled, holding the door frame. âNow stop pestering me. I have an account book to find. And a witness to talk to!â
Daran called behind her back, âBut arenât you at least a little bit of jealous when you walked in earlier?â
âNot even a bit!â
Janet snapped and shut the door close with a loud bang.
