Chapter 96.
The following day, Daran left the Crimson Fortress again.
The rogues had done great damage to this area when they occupied the city. There were many small towns and villages nearby, all suffered from the rogueâs tyrannies.
Now that they had taken the Crimson Fortress, it was time to clear out this place and bring the whole area back into order.
It was also a necessary step if they planned on heading out to the Great Canyon one day.
And Janetâs heart was filled with worries and concerns.
She couldnât say whyâ¦but she just felt a gruesome foreboding about them going to the Great Canyon.
Probably because the Rogue King had been hiding in the darkness for too long. They knew so little about their enemy, yet their enemy knew so much about them.
Janetâs gut told her that something bad would happen if they went.
But she couldnât stop Daran either.
Like he said, it was the right thing to do. And it was also his responsibility as the leader of this alliance.
The only thing she could do was to stand by his side and face everything with him together.
While Daran was gone, Janet went to the makeshift market again.
She needed to find a way to keep herself occupied so that she wouldnât get eaten alive by anxiety.
And she knew that Angelina had spent some time in the rogueâs territory. So she wanted to ask Angelina and see if she could learn more about the Great Canyon and the Grace Ruin.
âThe Great Canyon? Yeah, I have been there before.â
Angelina answered right away when Janet asked her about it.
They were sitting on the stools outside of the market, picking out straws from the grains. The afternoon sun was warm on their backs.
âWhat is that place like?â Janet pursued.
âIt is called the Great Canyon, but it is a black market, exclusive to the rogues. You can get all kinds of quirky, kinky stuff there, beyond your imagination. It is hell for people like us, but heaven for the rogues. A nice guy wonât last a single day in a place
like that.â
Janet frowned.
âBut can people like us blend into the crowd and sneak into the Great Canyon?â she asked.
âIt is a bad idea. Those barbarians will skin you alive if they spot you among the crowd. But in theory, yeah, you can do that. Yet as for the Grace Ruinâ¦well, that is a totally different story.â
âHow so?â
âThey donât allow normal rogues into the Grace Ruin.â
Angelina said with a sullen face.
âYou have to pass some sort of a test, to prove that you are a true Rogue, a pure blood, before you are allowed into the Rogue Kingâs imperial city. So you can say that the Grace Ruin is filled with the Rogue Kingâs most trusted men. You wouldnât be able to get in there. Even if you can, it would be impossible to get out.
Janet stared at the grains in her palm with a sick feeling in her stomach.
âDo you know anything about that test?â she asked Angelina.
Angelina shook her head, âNah. I never bothered to take it when I was there. But I heard that it was brutal. You will be a changed person after the test.â
Janet breathed out a heavy sigh.
âDonât think too much into it, OK?â
Angelina patted her shoulder with a smile.
âIt is not like that you will be going to that place any time
Janet replied with a bitter smile.
e soon.â
She didnât plan on telling Angelina about Daranâs plan. Not that she didnât trust Angelina, it was simply because she didnât want Angelina to worry.
They sat on the stools and carried on with their work.
Moments later, Glen and Veronica stopped by.
They were newly allowed out of the cell. Since Glen was no longer a Gamma and Veronica had no other things to do, they offered to help out at the market.
âGreat. We can use as much help as we can get!â
Angelina set the bag of grains aside and stood up from the stool.
âGlen, can you report to the warehouse? They are doing some heavy work there and we just donât have enough men.â
Glen hesitated and then looked at Veronica.
âAre you alright on your own?â he asked.
Veronica nodded with a smile.
âDonât push yourself too hard. And call me if you need anything,â he said in a slightly concerned voice.
âDonât worry, Glen, we will take good care of her.â
Janet smiled looking at them.
âIf.Veronica wants to make a home here, she has to find a way to fit in at some point. You canât protect her forever.â
âYeahâ¦I knowâ¦you are right,â Glen gulped. âJust look after her, alright? She just lost her voice. It might take her a while to adapt to this new life.â
Angelina laughed, âYour girlfriend is safe with us. Now just go. Duty awaits.â
GULİ Lİ
Janet smiled looking at them.

After Glen left, Angelina held Veronicaâs hand and led her to their office.
âAre you good with bookkeeping work? Have you learned any math before?â Angelina asked.
Veronica gave her a small nod. She looked tense.
âRelax, there is no need to be nervous.â Angelina grinned. âI will start you off with something easy today.â
She pushed open the office door.
Harper was in there behind the table, working with a pile of receipts and an account. book
âVeronica, meet Harper. And Harper, this is Veronica. She will be helping you out today.â
Angelina introduced them to each other and soon left the room.
Harper had a big smile on her face, which made her seem very nice and welcoming.
âIt is nice to meet you, Veronica. I have always wanted an accompany in this room,â Harper pulled out a chair. âCome and sit. I will show you how this works.â
Harperâs smiling face eased Veronicaâs guard off. She slowly walked over and sat down by Harperâs side.
Harper placed a pile of receipts in front of Veronica and said, âOK. So this is what you need to doâ¦â
Yet just then, a series of conversations came from outside of the window. âLance, what are you doing here?â Janet asked.
âI am here dropping off some armor that Angelina asked me to fix. And see if you need my help with anything.â
Veronica rounded her eyes abruptly in shock and snapped her head up to outside of the window.
Janet was standing there with a man. They were talking.
And Veronica had recognized that manâs voice.
gaze
She had heard that voice before, in the Grace Ruin, behind a curtain, when she went to beg the Rogue King to release her family.
She could never forget that voice. The voice of a demon.
The Rogue King was here!
Everyone was looking for him, but he had been hiding right here under their nose the whole time!!!

Veronicaâs whole body was quivering with fear and horror.
She needed to tell Janet about thisâ¦NOW!!
âWhat is the matter, Veronica?â
Harper was startled by Veronicaâs sudden movement, and she asked, âDo you need anything?â
Veronica jumped from her seat and darted toward the door. Harper shot up as well, following Veronica to the door and stopped her before she could get out.
âHey, hey. Easy. What happened? Why do you look like you just saw a ghost?â Harper placed her hand on Veronicaâs shoulder and said softly, âIt is OK. You can tell
me.â
Veronicaâs chest was rising and falling rapidly. She seemed mortified.
Harper gently steered her back to the table and put a pen and a piece of paper in front of her.
âWhy are you so horrified to see Lance? Do you know him?â
Harper bent down till she met Veronicaâs eye level. A comforting smile was on her lips.
âWrite it down, Veronica. It is OK. You can trust me.â
