Meanwhile, the same policewoman appeared again with a phone in her hand this time as she showed the videos to Ning Ran.
âSee this? Youâre now the most hated celebrity in the city. Even the brand you endorsed is affected because of you. Nobody is going to hire you anymore when you get out.â
Ning Ran stayed silent. How did this happen? I just signed the contract with Beauty Cosmetics not long ago. This company is under Nanshi Corporation so does that mean their interest is affected because of me? It must be stressful for Nan Chen. Sh*t. I caused him trouble again.
âWhy arenât you saying anything? Donât tell me youâre still hoping for Nan Chen to come and rescue you? Please. Youâre nothing but a sacrificial lamb to the Nan family. Theyâre busy protecting themselves now. What makes you think they have time to think of you?â the policewoman mocked.
Ning Ran was losing hope now for she had been there for some time now. If Nan Chen truly wanted to bail her out, he would have already done so. But he had not appeared even until now.
Has he given up on me? Maybe the problem is too serious that he has to sacrifice me to protect himself. Thatâs normal, I guess.
After all, no matter how popular Ning Ran was, she was just another celebrity of Star Entertainment in the eyes of those who thought celebrities were nothing special.
Celebrities were only a tool for entertainment and companies would not hesitate to sacrifice them for their own benefits.
I thought Nan Chen was different but it seems like I was wrong. Heâs handsome and rich. I guess itâs easy for him to replace me with some other woman. Iâm too naive.
The policewoman was secretly overjoyed when she noticed Ning Ranâs solemn expression. I finally knocked some sense into her.
âThis is how the rich always behaves. Donât take it to your heart. Though the Nan family sacrificed you, youâre pretty and talented. I believe itâll be easy for you to relocate and find a new boss. It doesnât matter who your boss is because I know youâll be successful no matter what, so you have to be wise enough not to let anything happen to you in here.â
How sweet. She even gave me advice.
âIf I say that, will you let me go?â
âOf course. Iâm a woman of my words. I already told you the reason very clearly that day. Donât make me repeat it,â replied the policewoman.
âI donât think you have that power, though. Itâs not like I donât believe you but releasing me is a huge matter, and only those who have higher positions can do that. I donât know who you are because you always have a mask on, and Iâd be dumb if I were to believe you blindly.â
âIf I were to smear Nan Chen, you have to convince me that thereâs someone who can keep me safe once the deal is done. Otherwise, people will kill me very easily. Iâd rather die here instead,â said Ning Ran calmly even though she was feeling the exact opposite on the inside.
The policewoman was infuriated by Ning Ranâs words. âI told you I have the power to decide whether to release you or not. Why wonât you believe me? What the hell do you want?â
âI want to meet your boss. That person is the one who can have a say in this,â requested Ning Ran.
âMr. Huang is a Police Commissioner. Heâs not someone you can meet just because you say so-â the policewoman suddenly shut her mouth upon realizing what she just said.
âSo his surname is Huang. Is he the Commissioner himself or the Deputy?â Ning Ran tried to pry more answers from her.
âCut the nonsense. I didnât say that.â Though the policewoman was wearing a mask, the panic in her eyes was still noticeable.
âIf someone were to get me out, it makes sense for them to be at least a Deputy Commissioner. Only then will I be at ease. I want to meet him. If he can guarantee my safety once Iâm outside, then Iâll agree to join hands with you to take down Nan Chen.â
âNo. He wonât meet you,â the policewoman rejected firmly without second thoughts.
They had obviously discussed this before. Her boss had requested her never to reveal his identity, so the policewoman knew that it was impossible for him to meet Ning Ran.
âOkay, then. Let me consider it.â
âWhat else is there to consider? How long are you going to keep doing this? Youâre just stalling for time by this point!â
âOf course not. I just want to make sure. Itâs too dangerous for me to go out now so I have to take precautions,â Ning Ran responded while glaring at the other woman.
âYouâre running out of time. Youâll be brought to the prosecution if you keep delaying, and itâll be difficult for you to get out then. Youâd better stop considering anything right now,â the policewoman suggested sternly.
âIâll decide as soon as possible. In the meantime, I wish to meet someone from the Nan family.â Ning Ran requested.
âThey donât even care about you anymore, yet youâre still hopeful? Youâre really stupid!â shouted the policewoman furiously.
âThatâs not true. Iâm just worried about my children and I want to know how they are through the Nan family. If I know theyâre fine, maybe Iâll agree to cooperate with you,â explained Ning Ran.
The policewoman contemplated for a moment. âIâll think about it.â
Ning Ran knew the policewoman had to discuss this with the higher-ups.
Meanwhile, Nan Chen remained in his office even when it was already nine in the evening. Unlike any other day, he had made many calls today. Usually, his subordinates would do this task while he only went through the emails. Nan Chen would only personally call someone if the matter at hand was important.
Jiang Zhe dared not disturb him as he waited outside. However, after receiving a call, he had no choice but to enter the office.
After Nan Chen ended the call, he stared at Jiang Zhe, signaling the latter to start talking.
âI got a call from the police station. They said Ms. Ding is demanding to meet you,â Jiang Zhe informed.
âDemanding?â Nan Chen frowned.
âYes. She refused to eat and shouted all day long.â
Hearing that, Nan Chenâs frown deepened. What the hell is wrong with that woman?
âI think sheâs panicking seeing that we hadnât done anything since her arrest. Maybe she thought that weâd abandoned her,â Jiang Zhe concluded.
âIf sheâs that dumb then maybe we should indeed abandon her.â
âIâd say itâs reasonable for her to react like that. She ended up there because she had been accused of doing drugs, yet we do nothing to help her. Itâs only natural for her to overthink stuff.â
âSo you want me to meet her? Donât you think itâs a bad time for that? Weâre falling right into othersâ
trap if I do that,â Nan Chen voiced out coldly.
âBut I think itâs fine for me to meet her.â Jiang Zhe replied.
