Chapter 1022
âMiss Starling, where are you right now?â Vicky asked with a frown.
âIâm at Neon⦠Club. Come here right away⦠Iâll be⦠waiting for you.â
âMiss Starlingâ¦â
Vicky wanted to say something else, but Aurora suddenly hung up the phone. Vicky called her again,
but she did not pick up this time.
Without any other options, Vicky changed out of her pajamas and went to Neon Club to look for Aurora.
In a corner of the Neon Club, Aurora was sitting slumped against the sofa, and in front of her was a
mess of empty bottles.
Vicky walked over to her and asked, âMiss Starling, are you okay?â
At the sound of Vickyâs voice, Auroraâs eyelashes fluttered before slowly opening her eyes. She must
have drunk quite a lot because her eyes were red and unfocused.
âVic⦠ky⦠you came!â She beamed a rarely-seen drunken smile at Vicky. âI didnât⦠expect you⦠to
really come!â
Vicky sighed helplessly at the hopelessly drunk Aurora.
âMiss Starling, youâre drunk. Let me send you home.â
âMiss Starling?â A hint of puzzlement flashed across her eyes. âWhy do you call me that when I call you
by your name? You should just call me⦠Aurora instead.â
Vicky knew it would be stupid of her if she was to reason with Aurora now, so she did not explain to her
but instead said, âLetâs go home.â
Aurora stared straight at her with wide-open eyes.
âWhy wonât you call me by my name? Is it because⦠you hate me too?â
âYouâre drunk. It isnât safe for you to be here. Please let me send me home,â said Vicky patiently.
âBut you wonât⦠even call me⦠by my nameâ¦â
Vicky did not understand why Aurora was so hung up about that. In the end, she gave in.
âAurora, let me send you home.â
Aurora shook her head. âNo, I wonât go back. I donât wanna go backâ¦. I donât wanna go back to that
cold, harsh house. If
I go back⦠theyâll only force me to⦠I⦠noâ¦â
Her eyes began to brim with tears.
âAll through my life, Iâve done everything theyâve asked of me ⦠I tried so hard to be the perfect
daughter they want⦠and yet⦠they wonât even give me a little bit of freedomâ¦â
Aurora must have been bottling that inside of her for a long time. It was as if a floodgate had opened
inside of her, and Vicky did not need to prompt her to continue.
âThey didnât allow me to make friends with anyone who was of no use to them when I was young⦠nor
did they allow me to talk to anyone who had a lower status than me⦠I could only make friends with
those in higher places or those who are of use to themâ¦
âBut little did they know⦠those people looked down on me and my family. I wanted to join them, but
they treated me like a slave⦠asking me to do this and do that every time⦠Later, the Starling family
became more powerful, and those who previously looked down on me started to suck up to me ⦠but I
knew they only did that to get on the good side of⦠my family.
âTheyâll pretend to be nice to my face, but as soon as my back is turned, theyâll start gossiping about
me⦠and making up lies to undermine me⦠Growing up, I have never ever had a true friend⦠I
know⦠I know that being born into a family such as mine has its price to pay but⦠butâ¦â
She suddenly looked at Vicky. Her eyes lost their emptiness and in its place were burning anger.
âBut how could they destroy the last of what little dream I have? Just how bad do they want to make me
into a puppet who has no feelings?â
