Stonewall High placed first in the overall sports division and second in both the overall academic and artistic division. Coach was so happy with us that he's taking the entire team out for lunch next with any place of our choosing. There was also a cash prize for the winners that made the victory even sweeter.
"Party at 8 pm. My place. Sunday." Dylan, one of the snobby rich kid, interrupted our conversation after the awarding. "Invite anyone you know." That was the last thing he said before walking away and proceeded to tell other people the same thing.
That's the first, having a party on a Sunday. The Principal had declared that we will resume our classes on Wednesday, so we can rest after the school event. Really considerate of him. Makes up for the fact that he barely does anything in school.
It took a couple tries, but I finally took the courage to ask Bri if she wanted to go to the party together. That I could pick her up from her house and we can go from there. She was already planning to go with her friends, so she had a hard time giving her answer.
I told her it was fine if she want to come if she didn't want to, but she just shook her head and tell her friends she'll be coming with me.
"Momma, Mom, which one should I wear?" I held up three different colored long-sleeved button up top. "The dark blue or the beige or the maroon one?"
The two of them were cuddled in the couch, Momma nursing a cup of tea in her hands. They looked at me like I grew another head with their scrunched up faces.
Instead of answering my question, Mom let out a prolonged hum. "There's a girl, isn't there?" She asked like she already knew the answer to it.
"Is that why you asked to borrow the car?" Mom shrieked, grinning widely.
My face started to feel warm. Even though it was true, I still denied it because I know all too well that they would never let it down.
Before I could say anything, Oscar jumped in the conversation as he walked down the stairs. "Are we talking about Cambria?" He had an evil smirk on his face as he sat down beside our moms.
This little shit.
I'm going to kill him in his sleep when I get back later.
"Cambria isn't it?" Momma's brows perked up with interest. "Pray tell, who is this Cambria your brother is talking about?"
"She's very nice." Oscar couldn't keep his mouth shut. "I met her one time. She tutors Will in Spanish and helped us with our presentation. But Dev says, "she's just a friend."" He made quotation marks in the air.
"Oscar, shut your mouth!" I exclaimed, pushing him further into the couch. "Mom, did you know he failed his math exam again?"
"Hey, you weren't supposed to them that!" He shouted, pointing an accusatory finger at me. "You swore to secrecy. What happened to brotherhood?!"
I rolled my eyes at his ridiculousness. I mean, I did swore to never tell, but it was his fault for actually trusting me that I would not use that information to tell our parents if I felt like getting him in trouble.
"We're going to talk about that later, Oscar." Mom said in sharp tone then looking back to me. "Now, this girl you likeâ"
"I don't like her like that, Mom." That sentence came out bitter out of my tongue.
Okay, I do like her, but they don't need to know that I do because they will tease me about it. And I don't like it when they go into my business.
"Like her like what?" I heard the front door open and came in my older sister, Greta, with her huge over night bag. She dropped them on the floor and placed her hands on her hips, huffing a breath. "Hey, family! Your favorite person is back!"
My brows furrowed as I looked at my sister. Greta attended a university thirty minutes away from here and was majoring in Film and Media Studies. She was often visiting every now and then, sometimes surprising me when I see her casually laying on the couch when I get home from practice and she has the audacity to ask me what was I doing at home.
She came into the living room and gave our parents both a hug and ruffled Oscar's hair. Standing behind the couch, she gave me a weird look. "Why on earth are you standing there without a shirt? Stop showing off your non-existent abs, weirdo."
"Missed you, too." I sarcastically beamed her a smile. "And my abs are not non-existent! They aren't that defined yet."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night, Dev." She dismissed, taking a seat on our second couch.
Since my family was of no help, I decided to say fuck it and go with the dark blue one, spritz some perfume and left the house before they could delay me any longer. I sent Bri a quick text that I was on my way to her.
One thing I did realize a few days ago was I never asked for her number until I asked her to go with me together to the party. I guess I haven't thought it since we almost talk every day at school even if we didn't have classes together that day. A simple five minute conversation on the hallway in between breaks was a usual routine for the two of us.
I parked the car in front of the address she sent me. Her house looked cozy and homey. I got out of the car and brushed myself off before nervously walking to the front door and rang the door bell and waited for someone to open it.
My heart beat was racing. I shouldn't have had drank that iced coffee a while ago, now my heart is starting to palpitate. Finally the door opened and came out Bri looking beautiful in her white blouse and embroidered jeans.
"Hi." She greeted, holding the door.
"Hi." I said, feeling a little breathless. "I like your jeans, they're very colorful."
She beamed and did a full circle spin. "Thanks. It was the outcome of being bored during the summer and had nothing to do."
I was about to say something when her dad suddenly came up behind her holding something. "Sweetie, don't forget your cardigan." His tone was caring, but his burning gaze were solely on me.
I tried not to cower and avoid eye contact, but it was hard to do while I'm being scrutinized. Mr. Mayes was a tall man with glasses and still has a head full of hair, I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just the older you get the more hair you lose.
"Thanks, Dad." Bri gave her father a hug and kiss on the cheek. "Oh, I forgot something in my room. I'll be right back." She gave me one last glance before disappearing inside the house, leaving me alone with her dad.
Mr. Mayes waited a few seconds to speak something to me. "Listen here, young man, and listen good. You better not be drinking alcohol or doing drugs or doing anything that will get my daughter in trouble or cause her harm. If you do, I will find you and spread flesh-eating bacterias to ruin that pretty face of yours, got that?" He threatened, pointing a finger at me.
I gulped, nodding. "Y-Yes, sir."
He hummed in response, crossing his arms against his chest, quite pleased with himself.
For sure, I just pissed myself in my pants a little. Spread flesh-eating bacteria on my face? I imagined that scenario in my head and I visibly shivered.
What seemed like an eternity, my salvation finally returned and spared me from the burning gaze of her dad.
"Dad, I'll be back around eleven, okay?" Bri informed him.
He tsked. "Be back at ten."
Bri frowned. "What about fifteen minutes before eleven?"
"Make that ten fifteen instead."
"Ten-thirty." Bri bargained.
Her dad thought about it for a moment before finally agreeing.
"Don't worry, Mr. Mayes, I will bring her back before her curfew." I chimed in, hoping to get a small approval.
Ignoring my statement, he told us that we should be on our way. "Remember what I told you." He mumbled under his breath while Bri was walking first to the car.
"I promise to keep her safe and sound, sir." And I wasn't planning on breaking that promise.
