Lainey
I'm in the middle of a lovely dream when a weight plops on my stomach. I crack open one eye to find my cat Tobias staring at me from atop my stomach.
"Seriously, I was in the middle of a pretty nice dream. Why did you have to wake me up?" I ask my cat as if he would answer me.
As normal he simply stares at me. I let out a long sigh and slowly reel my phone up by the cord. Sometime in the middle of my slumber, it fell behind my bed.
As I pull it up the alarm I set goes off. With a glare directed at my cat, I simply turn it off. How he knew it was time for me to get up is beyond me.
I get up and slowly get ready for school. As I get ready my phone dings multiple times. Most likely birthday messages.
Did I mention that today's my birthday? Probably not.
Once I'm dressed I skip downstairs. "Good morning, Lainey," My mom sings.
A smile spreads across my face, "Morning Mom."
My dad sets his coffee down. "Something is different about you this morning, and I can't put my finger on it."
I roll my eyes, already knowing where my dad is going. "Ah, you look older." He snaps his fingers and my mom shakes her head. "It's your birthday!"
I pat his shoulder. "I'm glad you remembered."
My dad laughs. "Of course."
My mom smiles, "Happy birthday, sweetie."
Unlike a lot of kids my age my parents actually love each other. All my life my parents have had a happy marriage. I guess I got lucky.
My parents met at their college graduation.
They somehow end up with each other's graduation caps when everyone threw them up.
And to quote my dad, "And ever since the moment your mother's hand brushed mine the rest has been history." Normally my mom rolls her eyes or laughs when he says that.
Before I can respond to my mom's, "Happy birthday," thunder sounds from the steps, and two obnoxious boys run into the kitchen.
My brothers, Jeremy and Jeremiah both eleven months younger than me. Identical twins even though they look nothing alike.
When they were younger they looked similar but now they're polar opposites.
Jeremy has a blond buzz cut and chocolate brown eyes. Jeremiah took after our dad and has dirty blond shaggy hair that is always in need of a haircut. Like our brother, he has brown eyes just with a hint more green.
Jeremy swings an arm around my shoulders.
"Happy Birthday squirt. One day closer to the sweet release of death," he sings as he ruffles my hair.
I roll my eyes and Jeremiah gives me a warm smile and rolls his eyes at our brother's antics."Happy birthday, Lainey."
My mom laughs and pulls out the seat beside my dad. I push away from Jeremy who still has his arm around me. "Get off me Jere, I don't want your cooties."
I push Jeremy away and I notice a shy smile spread across Jeremiah's face. "Yeah, who knows what he might have after being with Sara Colin's."
Jeremy's face pales and my mom's head whips in his direction. I share a smile with Jeremiah from behind my yogurt cup.
Growing up Jeremy was always the meaner brother and Jeremiah was the sweet one.
For instance, When I was about six or seven we were riding our bikes and I fell off mine.
As most six and seven-year-olds do.
Jeremy stopped beside me and said, Quit being a baby Lainey, and get up."
So I did what any sister would have done.
I showed him my scraped knee and said, "But Jere, my knee hurts." I even made sure my lip wobbled as if I were on the verge of tears and hysterics.
Jeremy then proceeded to laugh at me. Jeremiah who had finally caught up with us yellled at Jeremy for laughing at me and insisted they take me home.
And after I dramatically limped around Jeremiah carried me home.
Even though I was older the twins have always been bigger/taller than me. Expect for a few months in our preteen years.
Even though Jeremy's always teased me he would not hesitate to beat up any boy who hurt me.
One time in middle school a boy made the mistake of shoving me into a locker when Jeremy was around.
Jeremy punched the kid right in the nose and got suspended for a week.
As much as they got on my nerves I got lucky to get two younger brothers that always treated me like their sweet little sister.
"Jeremy, did you have sexual intercourse with a girl?" My mother asks.
Jeremiah bursts out laughing and my dad chokes on his coffee. Jeremy's face goes blank and I take this moment to skip out the door.
As the front door clicks shut I can still hear my mother's voice, "Jeremy, do you know how to use protection?"
I pull out my phone as laughter overtakes me to text my brother.
Me: That was by far the best present you could have ever given me.
Jeremiah: Good. I didn't have any money to buy you anything.
I pull my book bag higher up on my shoulder as I look across the street to my friend Trey's house. With a glance to my left to saw my best friend's Maizes house.
As I walk past my car I resist the urge to roll my eyes.
On my sixteenth birthday, my parents gifted me their old car which happened to be a 1989 Chevy blazer.
I know most kids would have hated it but I love that car. Well, I did till it broke down on me about three weeks ago. Now I'm waiting for my dad to get it fixed.
My dad is sort of a Do-everything-yourself kind of man. Which is nice when you want to hang up more book self's, but not so much when he can't find the time to fix your car.
But, I'm not going to complain because I have a lovely neighbor who has to drive me to school. After all, he is my friend.
As I cross the street Trey opens his garage. The sun makes his red hair look even redder and freckles spattered across his face practically glisten.
"Good morning, Trey," I sing as I walk up his driveway.
"Morning Birthday girl," Trey says with his back towards me as he dings around the passenger seat.
He turns and his smile spreads. "Is that grey hair I see?"
I roll my eyes and chuck my bag on the bench seat in the back of his truck.
Trey has an older brother and when he left for college he left him his beat-up four-door pickup.
Or what we like to call, The rolling dumpster.
Trey glances at his phone, "Where the hell is Maize?"
I laugh, "Probably trying to pick out what shirt to wear."
Trey simply rolls his eyes with a soft smile tugging at his lips.
Maise is my best friend who also happens to live next door.
About eight years ago my parents moved and I lost all my friends. Luckily, Maize was also in need of a female companion so we became friends almost instantly.
Now, before I moved Maize was already best friends with Trey since their parents are close friends. So they were sort of a package deal.
Maise's front door slams shut and a tall blonde runs across the street.
Masie is a 5/6 goddess born with blonde hair most girls spread a fortune to aquire. On top of all that she has ocean blue eyes that you can easily get lost in.
I myself stand to a whooping average height of 5/4 with kinky brown hair that's practically black in the winter. And eyes of moss green intertwined with brown and gold.
"Wow, Trey your hair is flaming today, "Maize teases as she enters his garage.
Translation: Trey's hair looks extra red today.
Trey hops in the truck and starts the engine to drown out Maize's teasing.
Maize and I follow suit. "Happy Birthday Lainey, "Maize sings from the front seat.
Before I can say thank you Trey says, "I told Lainey happy birthday first so in your face, Maize-Moo."
I snort and Maize simply glares at Trey. "I know I said this earlier but your hair is extra red today, fruit Trey."
I guess with them having close parents they have become practically siblings.
Well, maybe not totally like siblings. Ever since ninth grade Maize has had a major crush on Trey. She claims the crush stared when my idiot brother dared them to kiss in a stupid game of truth and dare.
I am sure you can guess which of my lovely brothers dared them.
Anyway, once I learned about Masies not so friendly feelings I've been trying to push them together.
In all honesty, I don't know why she finds him attractive. No offense to Trey, but he is a total nerd.
I mean he plays the trumpet. Again, no offense but his arms are very nodded like. And with his 5/11 height, he is very lanky.
I guess to me I only see him as my nerdy friend Trey. Or maybe it's just my best friend's protectiveness thinking Maize can do better.
(Which she can)
Okay, that was mean.
They would be cute together and I can't wait to give Trey the, you hurt her I will kill you, speech.
And after three and a half years I've had no luck because Trey is the most naive, oblivious guy to walk this planet.
My goal is to have them together by graduation. Which is about a month and a half away.
"So why were you late this morning, Maze?' I ask.
Trey smirks, "Yes, why were you?"
Maize glares at both of us. "My dog threw up."
I groan and Trey laughs. 'That will be ten dollars, Miss Lainey."
Maize gasps. "You made a bet on why I would be late?"
I hand Trey a crisp ten. "Maize, you have the three same excuses, I overslept, I couldn't find my book bag, or my dog threw up."
Maize groans and Trey holds up a finger, "One time she did say the reason she was late was that she didn't have toilet paper and her mom had to get her some."
I burst out into giggles and Maize crosses her arms across her chest. "You are both jerks. I don't know why I'm friends with either of you?"
I pat Maize's shoulder from the backseat. "Because you love me dearly and would be lost without me."
Maize tries her best to hide her smile. Trey on the other hand looks baffled. "Um excuse me, but Lainey, you forgot to add why she's friends with me in that little BS speech."
I rest my back against the door of his truck.
"I don't know why she's friends with you. Quite honestly she could do a lot better in the male-friend department."
Maize lets out a cackle and Trey glares at me from the rearview. "Get out of my car."
Maize mock gaps. "Fruit Trey, how dare you. I'm telling your mother."
Trey shakes his head and mutters, "I need new friends."
Maize simply turns up the radio and we annoy him with our obnoxious singing all the way to school.
