Lainey
For the last two days, I have been following Owen to work. When I go with him I sit on tires and read while he works on cars.
A few times I have helped him with small things like changing the oil or rotating tires. It is still quite boring, but I am starting to think Owen working on cars is a little hot.
I know I was shocked when I first came to the realization, but I know that just because I think him working on cars is hot doesn't mean anything. There has to be plenty of other girls that find certain things their guy friend does attractive.
Right?
Gosh I never thought I would be considering Owen a friend.
I shake those thoughts from my head when Owens shoves my shoulder. I glance around and find Mazie standing in front of a mirror with her hands on her hips staring at Owen.
"Lane, she wants to know what you think of this dress," Owens says dryly.
I smile, "It looks good, but I don't think the color suits you."
Owen relays my response and Maize nods as she walks back into the dressing room.
"Where were you?" Owen asks me.
The amount of confusion that must be on my face makes Owen laugh, "What were you thinking about?" Owens translates through snorts of laughter.
Yeah, I'm definitely not going to tell him I was just thinking. "Nothing."
Owen looks like he doesn't believe me, but he doesn't push.
Today, Maize texted Owen that she wanted to go prom dress shopping and to bring me. Luckily, he didn't have to work so he came to be my translator.
It's a bittersweet feeling because I love seeing her try on dresses, but I am supposed to be trying them on with her.
Maize comes out in another dress that is a light peach color and hugs her body beside the small slit up her leg.
Before she even reaches the mirrors Owen laughs, "I may not be a girl, but I know that color completely washes you out."
I laugh and Maize snarls at Owen but goes back into the dressing room.
"I'm shocked you don't think prom is a waste of time?" Owen says.
When I glance at him a smirk takes hold of my face, "I love having fun, you just don't see that side of me."
Owen simply hums in response.
"Do you think prom is a waste of time?" I ask.
Owen shrugs, "It's not as fun as everyone makes it out to be."
True, I guess.
"I had fun last year," I say, to which Owen rolls his eyes.
"Maybe you haven't had the right date, I add.
Owen responds with a snort, "The girl I went with was a very boring date."
I nudge his shoulder with mine, "See, if you went with the right girl then maybe you would have had fun."
Owen gives me a blank look and a snarky smile takes form on my face, "Or maybe you should have gone with a guy."
Owen sighs, "Very funny, Lane." I continue to laugh and Owen's lips twitch, "For the record, there is nothing wrong with that, but I'm not that way."
"What way," I ask innocently.
Owen laughs as he shakes his head, "You're an asshole."
Before I can respond Maize comes out in another dress, Owen and I share a look, "Trey will love that dress," Owen remarks.
Maize huffs, "I'm not trying to impress Trey."
I laugh, "She is always trying to impress Trey."
Owen smiles, "Lane said you are always trying to impress Trey."
Maize rolls her eyes with a small smile, "So you like the dress," she asks.
I nod, and Owen relays the message. The dress fits her perfectly, it's a shimmery red dress that hugs her all the way to the slit that comes up her thigh.
"Trey is a dumb man," Owen comments as Maize twirls.
His comment does something odd to my stomach and a heavy weight settles on my chest. "She already has her eyes on someone else, Huntley," I say dryly.
Owens's eyes snap up to mine, and a shocked look passes over his face. "I can tell," He says carefully.
Maize smiles, "While you continue to have conversations without me I'm going to change clothes."
Owen gives her a shrug and she waddles into the changing room. A deep navy blue dress catches my eyes and I move toward it. I tell myself it's because I want to admire the dress, but deep down, I know it is to avoid Owen's questioning looks.
I don't know what came over me, I don't know why his comment to Maize bothered me the way it did. And the worst thing is I think Owen noticed or at least noticed a change in my demeanor.
Owen comes to my side as I run my hands down the dress. This is dress the dress I was planning on buying for prom. I had been looking at them online, but I never got to try it on.
"I'm sure that dress would look really good on you," Owen says gently.
My head turns to stare at him. Have I gone crazy or did he just compliment me?
"Was that a compliment, Huntley?"
He rolls his eyes and pulls the dress off the rack. "Trust me, I am just as shocked to hear myself say that as you are."
I snort and Maize comes out of the changing room with her dress. "What you doing Owen?" She asks.
Owen smirks, "Lainey wants to try on this dress."
I gasp and shove his shoulder, "I do not."
Maize tilts her head with a smile dancing on her lips, "That is the dress she wanted to buy."
I try to grab the dress from Owen, but he moves out of my way, "Then she should at least try it on."
"I agree," Maize chirps.
I groan, "And how in the hell is that going to work?"
Owen looks me up and down, "You unzip the dress, pull it over your head, and zip up the back." He feigns confusion, "Have you never tried on a dress."
Maize is covering her mouth in an attempt to hide her laughter. "Get me a damn room, smartass," I bite out."
Owen gives Maize a charming smile, "She wants a room."
Maize swallows her laughter, "I will be right back."
"You are a pain in my ass, "I growl.
Owen pats my back as I follow Maize into the changing room.

Owen
Lainey follows Maize into the changing room and I sit down on a chair. I could tell from the look on Lainey's face she wanted to try on the dress, but I knew she would never ask to try it on. Even if I am the only one who will be able to see her in it.
Lainey groans from the changing room and I take that as her telling me she is ready to come out. I tell Maize to open the door and Lainey doesn't come out. "Owen, shut the door I don't want you to see me."
I sit forward with a smile on my lips, "Oh, it can't look that bad."
Maize mouths, "She doesn't want to come out?"
I shake my head and a worker walking by gives me a weird look. "Come on Lane, it can not be that ugly."
Lainey groans and stomps out, before I see her I glance at Maize and mouth, "Shes coming out."
When my eyes land on Lainey in front of the mirror my jaw drops. I have never seen a dress more perfect for someone.
"Just go ahead and say how bad it is," Lainey snaps with her arms crossed.
Her comment goes in one ear and out the other, all I can think about is her in that dress. It's like I'm seeing her for the first time.
The dress is a deep navy blue with a V-shape neckline that shows more of her than I have ever seen.
The rest of the dress falls around her loosely. Well, it hugs her waist and hips perfectly before it falls to the ground in a puddle of blue around her.
"Is it seriously taking you that long to come up with a snarky comment," Lainey practically hisses.
My eyes fianlly seem to focus again and her question finally sinks in, "No. I think the dress looks amazing."
Lainey seems taken aback by my comment, but I am too mesmerized to care. Has she always been this beautiful?
It's as if a different person walked out of that changing room.
"You think this dress looks good?" Lainey asks as she turns towards the mirror, giving me a perfect view of the back of the dress.
The back of the dress is completely open, leaving her entire back on display. Not to mention the dress hugs her backside perfectly.
I mentally slap myself back into reality. This is Lainey. Lainey who is the annoying girl that has played pranks on you all throughout high school.
"Lane, the dress looks amazing, stop lying to yourself, " I try to say dryly, but it comes out a lot softer than I meant for it to.
She glances at me over her shoulder, "Well, I'm going to change. Thanks for making me try on a dress that I will probably never be able to wear."
The look she gives me makes me laugh despite the depressing words she just said.
As she is changing, Mazie takes a seat beside me. "I take it the dress looked really, really good."
"What do you mean?" I sputter.
Maize gives me a look that says drop the bullshit, and I simply sigh.
