Owen
When I roll over the next morning I immediately feel around for Lainey. After a few moments of blindly feeling around my bed, I open my eyes to find it empty.
"Lane," I say quietly.
When there is no answer I say it louder, "Lainey."
I quickly climb out of bed and run into the hall, "Lainey."
"Where the hell is she," I mumble.
When I got to the kitchen I found a note on the counter from my mom saying she and Sadie went to visit Mimi.
When I get back to my room my phone lights up. I open it to find I have ten messages from Maize.
I only need to read one to know why she texted me.
I throw on a shirt and run out the door.
Lainey finally woke up.
~~~~
When I arrive the first words out of my mouth are, "How is she?"
Trey gives me a puzzled look as Maize says, "They won't let anyone but family in, but they say she is doing good."
I sit down beside them and let out a sigh, "I take it tomatoes over there don't know about my situation."
Maize lets out a bark of laughter, "No he doesn't."
"What is he talking about," Trey demands.
Msize looks at me and I simply shrug, I don't feel like explaining it.
It takes about thirty minutes for Trey to finally believe us. After those thirty minutes, the Lainey brothers come out and tell Maize that we can visit Lainey for a few minutes.
But when they see me they both do a double take. Jereimah's face scrunches in a way that reminds me of Lainey and Jeremy's fist tightens as he takes a step towards me.
"Why the hell is he here?" Jeremy says quietly.
I guess I don't have the best rep with them. "I'm not here to cause any problems," I say gently.
Maize steps forward and lowers Jeremy's hand, "It's a long story but I promise he is here for good reasons."
Jeremy looks at me like he doesn't believe either of us but Jereimaih pats his back, "It's okay, man."
Jeremy simply nods at me and I follow Maize and Trey to Lainey's room.
"I'm surprised you didn't tell them you were dating Owen," Trey says sarcastically from Maises side.
Maize groans and I sigh, "You are still not over that?"
Trey opened the door with a glare and pointed at me, "Nope."
My retort dies on my lips the second I see Lainey sitting in the hospital bed.
~~~~
Maize quickly runs to her side, "Oh my gosh you're okay."
Lainey laughs, "Of course I'm okay."
Maize wraps her arms around Lainey and lets out a sob. "I am so sorry." Another sob shakes her as she continues, "I'm a horrible driver and you almost died because of it."
Lainey pushs Maize away so she can see her face, "Maze, none of this is your fault." She wipes a tear, "None of it."
Maize quickly nods and Trey steps closer, "Too bad you missed spring break."
Lainey rolls her eyes as they laugh. Once they all calm down her eyes find me.
Every muscle in my body tightens under her stare. After last night I know I can never live without her. Hell, I don't want to live without her.
I don't care what I have to do but I will be with her somehow. Even if I have to take a couple of black eyes from her brother.
"What is he doing here?" Lainey asks coldly.
Maize quickly glaces at me then back to Lainey. "Are you not happy to see him?"
Laineys face sruches up just like her brothers did a few moments ago. "Why the hell would I want him here."
The amount of dislike that rolls in her voice sends my heart plummeting to my gut. "Lane, I promise I'm not here to cause any problems," I say softly.
Something flashes across her beautiful eyes, but then it's replaced with loathing. "I swear, Maze, why the fuck is he here?"
Then it hits me.
Lainey doesn't remember the last two weeks. Because the Lainey that is staring at me isn't the same Lainey that kissed me last night.
The same Lainey that fell asleep in my arms.
Before anyone can respond I storm out of the room and to my car.
~~~~
I don't know where I'm going when I get in the car, all I know is I had to get away from the hospital.
After twenty minutes I decide to visit a certain someone to get answers.
The entire drive to the flea market I replay Lainey's expression on her face when she saw me.
My heart broke in that one moment. How did I let her hate me so much for so long?
When I arrive at the flea market my phone is blowing up with texts from Maize. I ignore all of them.
I storm through the flea market till I find the familiar tent.
"Why didn't you tell us she wouldn't remember anything from the last two weeks," I yell as I walk into the tent.
The fourchen teller glares at me, "I'm sorry, sir I'm with a customer."
I stop at the counter and glare at the lady. "I don't give a shit."
The woman she is helping snorts and leaves. The fortune teller sighs, "What do you need."
I lean on the counter trying to get closer to her. "You withheld information from us."
She folds her arms. "Look I don't know who you are and what you are talking about."
I feel an evil smile creep over my face. "Oh, you know exactly what I'm talking about."
She leans closer to me and I get a glimpse at her yellow teeth. "I noticed you don't have your little girl with you."
I don't let my stare waver as I say, "No, she woke up but doesn't seem to remember anything that happened."
She lets out a humorless laugh as she moves away from me, "I don't see where that is a bad thing."
I run my hand through my hair, "She hates me again."
The woman's hand stills as she is looking through her books. "So something happened between you."
"Yes," I say softly.
She turns around to face me. "You like her don't you."
I nod and she asks, "Well, I guess you solved part of the wish."
"What do you mean?" I ask coldly.
She rolls her eyes, "You finally saw Lainey like she was the only girl and blah blah blah, but you only told her you think you have feelings for her."
"What?" I sputter.
She grunts as her elbows hit the counter as she leans towards me, "Her wish was for you to finally see her for who she is." She motions toward me with her hands. "You did that, but you didn't fully state how you feel."
"And how do you know this?" I ask.
She takes a bite from an apple she pulled out from underneath the counter. "I'm a damn fortune teller, I can see the fucking future."
"So you knew this would happen," I state dryly.
She simply shrugs.
I place my head in my hands and groan, "So what do I do now?"
"My advice would be to get to know her all over again," She takes a bite of the apple. "You may trigger a memory or she will fall in love with you again."
I scoff and push away from the counter. "Thanks, thats just great." I give her a fake smile. "You could have told me that two weeks ago."
She smiles with apple pieces all in her teeth. "Then the first half of the wish would have never been fixed."
I flip her out as I leave.
Now I have more questions than I came up with.
