Owen
Over the next few days, I spend them with Lainey at school. Whether it's walking her to her classes or sitting with her at lunch.
At first, she was downright ugly, like her jabs hurt a lot. But I didn't let it stop me from winning her back.
Now, I'm pulling up in her driveway to fix her car. I wanted to do it earlier this week but today is the first afternoon I had off.
When I get out of my car I see Lainey's curtains in her room move. I know she is watching me as pull out my tools and walk over to her blazer.
I open her car and pop the hood. As I expected I hear Lainey's front door fly open. "So now you are trespassing on my property?"
I give her a sweet smile. "I called your dad this morning and he said he would love to take a look at it."
She crosses her arms in an attempt to look threatening, "Well, I don't need you to fix it."
I lean my arms on her Blazer, watching her eyes track the movement. "Now, we both know that a lie, darling."
Lainey groans, "Do whatever you want, jerk."
A teasing smile tugs on my lips, "Oh, so fixing your car for free makes me a jerk."
"Yes," She snaps.
I laugh as she stomps to Maize's house. "I wouldn't go over there if I were you," I call over my shoulder.
I know for a fact Trey is hanging out with Maize I don't think Lainey would want to find out this way.
"Did you seriously think I would sit and watch you work on my car like some love-sick child?" Lainey throws back.
I shrug as I losesen a bolt, "Do you think I didn't know Maize has windows as well."
Her only response is to slam the door.

Lainey
How can one man be so hot but still manage to make my blood boil?
Since I got back from the hospital he has acted like a different person. At first, it was annoying, but now we have sort of become friends.
But why he still tries to flirt with me is beyond me.
When I get upstairs I notice Maize's door is open, but there is a rustling sound coming from her room. It sounds like someone is roiling around in the bed.
"Hey Maize you will never believe what just happened," I say as I enter her room.
What I didn't expect to see was Maize making out with Trey.
I stop in the doorway as they quickly pull apart.
Maize tries to tame her hair as she says, "Lainey, give me a second to explain."
Explain what?
My best friend is finally making out with her crush of four years and didn't tell me, her only best friend.
"Oh no, it all seems pretty black and white," I throw back.
"Lainey, calm down," Trey says gently.
"You should shut the fuck up," I growl as I point my finger at him.
Trey's face pales and Maize sighs, "We wanted to tell you we just didn't want to overwhelm you."
"Overwhelm me." I shoot.
They both nod.
I let out a humorless laugh as tears threaten to fall, "Why don't you two get back to whatever you were doing and I will gladly butt out of you all life."
As I walk out I hear the bed groan as Maize gets up, "Don't be this way, Lainey."
I ignore her as I slam her front door.
Of course, Owen gets my car fixed because he gives me a bright smile, "All fixed, darling."
Since he is the only one around I direct my rage towards him, "You fucking knew and didn't tell me."
His face falls and he moves towards me and I back away, "Why didn't you tell me, Owen!"
"Lane," He says gently.
"You said you were my friend and you lied to me," I yell.
"It wasn't my place to tell you," He says gently.
He's right.
It wasn't his place to tell me, but that doesn't make me any less pissed.
"Why did they hide it from me?" I cover my eyes with the palms of my hands. "Did think I would be mad?" I cry.
Owen takes my hands in his which are covered in black grease. "I think it happened when you were in the coma and they didn't want to overwhelm you."
I swear if someone says overwhelm one more time...
His thumb brushes over mine. "This is new to them too. Maybe they felt better keeping it private at first."
"We wanted to tell you," Maize says behind me.
I turn to find Trey's arm around Maize while tears run down her face. "I'm sorry Lainey."
I let go of Owens's hands and walked towards Maize. She must be able to read my expression because she pulls me into a tight hug. "I'm so happy for you," I whisper.
Maize lets out a half laugh, half sob, and hugs me tighter. "I wanted to tell you so bad but we never felt like the timing was right."
I sigh as we pull away. "I swear to god, if you break Maize's heart I will kill you," I say coldly to Trey.
He nods with a smile. "Trust me, I will never break her heart."
There is a loud bang from where Owen is, "If you do I will help Lane hide the body." Owen yells.
Every time he calls me Lane I get this weird feeling of deja vu.

"Thank you, Owen," I say as Maize and Trey leave.
He smiles at me, "You're welcome, Lane."
I laugh, "How much do I owe you?"
Owen slams his trunk shut to lean against it. "You have to be my friend."
I tilt my head, "That's it?"
He smiles, "Yep, you Lainey Smit have to be me, Owen Huntley's friend."
I laugh at him using my smart-ass comment I said the other day. "Fine, I guess I can try."
