~Stupid birds~.
Maya kept her eyes shut, her face buried in the mattress, as she groped for her pillow, blindly hurling it at the window. ~They had no regard for her sleep~. She groaned, rolling over in the bed.
As she turned, she expected to see Julian in his cotâbut it was vacant. ~Damn it. Fucking hell.~ How had she missed him getting up and leaving? It was as if her senses were numbed when it came to him. Her wolf didnât perceive him as a threat and wouldnât alert her.
~Not very fucking helpful~.
Hopefully, he hadnât gotten himself into trouble. She wasnât in the mood to endure one of Alexâs ~lectures~. It made her feel like a child.
She pulled down her t-shirt, covering her midriff before stepping out of the room. ~The door was already ajar~. Not a good sign. He hadnât even attempted to conceal his departure.
She peeked into the hallway, hoping to spot him, but she didnât. ~Strange~. No one would let him wander. Someoneâprobably Alexâwould intercept him. Something wasnât adding up.
âJulian?â she called out.
âMaya?â
That was ~not~ him.
Olivia emerged from the nursery, eyebrows raised. âYou okay?â
âUm, yeah. Have you seen Julian?â
âHe left with Alex.â
"He did what?"
âHe left with Alex,â she repeated.
~Well~. That didnât sound promising. âAnd you know this because heâs taken him out back to⦠execute him?â She asked, trying to sound light-hearted, but there was a hint of sincerity in her voice.
~Especially considering the whole alpha situation~.
Oliviaâs eyes bulged and she shook her head vehemently. âWh-what? No!â she almost yelled. ~Olivia. Still unable to detect sarcasm. ~âNo, he told me they had something to inspect⦠and to pass the message alongâ¦â
âSo I wouldnât chase after them?â
She grinned. âSomething like that.â
âYou know what? Thatâs fine with me,â Maya retorted, throwing her hands up. âI get a break from babysitting.â
âIs that why you were looking for him?â
âI didnât want Alex to scold me for ~losing~ him.â
âSo you werenât concerned about him?â
Maya pointed a finger at her. "Hold on, missy. I don't think you're in any position to be doing whatever it is you're trying to do."
âIt was just a question,â Olivia said, a twinkle in her eyes.
âSure, a question.â
âSo ~maybe~ youâd be a little upset if something happened to him. Satisfied?â
âOverjoyed.â
âYou know,â she started, clicking her tongue. âI preferred you when you were whiny.â
"No, you didn't."
âYouâre right, you were annoying.â
â~Thanks~.â
Maya gave a nonchalant shrug. âYouâre the one who brought it up.â She shrugged again. âNow we can only hope these two donât end up killing each other.â
âAlex mentioned it to me. Do you think Julian is an Alpha?â
âI canât say for sure, butâit feels like he might be.â
âAnd how is that going to play out?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âTwo Alphas?â
Maya blinked slowly, her lips slightly parting. ~She didnât have an answer~. âIt⦠wonât.â
Olivia jerked her head back, her hand instinctively reaching for the base of her neck. âWhat do you mean by that?â
~Perfect~. Alex hadnât bothered to explain that part to her. Instead, he left this uncomfortable conversation for Maya to handle. "Liv⦠If⦠if my mate isn't some insane psychopath that needs to be put down⦠we'll have to⦠leave."
Her mouth dropped open, her hand quickly covering it. âLeave the pack?â
~Oh great~. She was about to get all emotional. âLiv, thatâs just how it is. Look at youâyou left your old life.â She tilted her head to the side. âYou had a lot ofâ¦crazy shit happening, but even if you hadnât been stalked and manipulated by a lunatic⦠you couldnât have stayed in your little human world.
âButâcouldnâtâ¦â
âNo, two Alphas it... doesnât work. Father and son, maybe. Sometimes it doesnât⦠or itâll work for a while. But two strangersâadults? Theyâll end up tearing each other apart.â
âSo thatâs it? Youâre just going to leave?â
She didnât want to have this conversation. Not yet, not now. Everything was still up in the air, nothing was certain. Maya had always known this might be a possibility. She cared about the pack and everyone in it, but she knew better than to get too attached.
âLetâs cross that bridge when we come to it. ~If~ we come to it.â One look at Olivia told her she was on the verge of breaking down. âCome on. Your kidâs asleep, mine is with Alex⦠how about we take a break and stop worrying about this shit?â
âO-okay.â
Maya forced a smile onto her face, throwing an arm around Olivia and leading her away. Leaving meant stepping into the unknown. She had no idea what kind of life awaited her out there, or what would happen if Julian regained his memories.
Best not to dwell on it.
Future Maya could handle it.
***
âIs this all my fault?â
âYou were with Maya. She wouldâve noticed if youâd gone off on a killing spree.â
âThere are other ways to be guilty.â
He had been filled with doubt when he woke up. He didnât know who he was, what he was capable of. Maybe none of this seemed possible to him ~now~, but if he had⦠memories⦠recollections of events that could have changed himâ¦
~Maybe~.
Then they found this place. It brought him some peace. It suggested that maybe he wasnât capable of such atrocities. Then it hit him: not having committed the murders didnât mean he was innocent.
âWeâre far from it, but weâre closer to the packhouse than where you found me, right?â
Alex nodded.
âWhat if this one⦠is about me? Finding me? Punishing me? I donât fucking know,â he said, laughing nervously. He ran his fingers through his hair, wiping sweat off his forehead. âWhat if Iâm leading them straight to your pack?â
âIâve thought about it.â
That seemed fair. It probably explained some of his hostility towards him. Alex felt like Julian was putting his pack at risk. There was probably no way to know until it was too late⦠for either of them.
âYeah? And what conclusion did you come to?â
âDid Maya tell you my theory?â
âNo.â
âShe doesnât agree with it.â He tilted his head back, looking up at the sky. âA hunter. I think it might be a hunter.â
~A hunter~. That didnât sound familiar. Then again, most things didnât. Did it surprise him? Was he indifferent? ~He didnât know~. âWhat does that mean? Is that a common occurrence?â
He gave a dismissive shake of his head. âIt hasnât occurred in ages. Perhaps even longer.â
âThen why suspect a hunter? It doesnât seem to make sense.â
âYouâre right,â he conceded. âWhen I was a kid, I heard a story. I canât confirm its truth. They spoke of a hunter, far from here.â
âI canât recall a damn thing. So, Iâm not the best person to advise you on whether itâs worth investigating.â
âWhy did you want to return here, then?â
He offered a nonchalant shrug. âI felt like I overlooked something.â
Caught between worrying for Mayaâs safety and being distracted by her presence, he sensed something familiar. But he couldnât pinpoint what it was. He thought returning might helpâit didnât.
âSomething you noticed?â
He shook his head again. âNo, it wasnât something I saw.â
~Then what was it~?
Julian dropped to his knees, bringing his face close to the earth. ~Could it be a smell~? He crawled on the ground, his nose barely leaving the grass. The smell of blood was evident butâ~there was something else~.
It was mingled with the air, but it was out of place.
He couldnât distinguish it from the other smells. He couldnât put it into words. If it was a specific smell, he could name it. Mint, lemon⦠anything. But it wasnât like that. He just ~knew~ this smellâit was familiar.
But Julian couldnât explain why.
âCan you smell that?â
Alex expanded his chest, inhaling deeply, his nostrils widening. âWhat am I supposed to be smelling? A human? A wolf?â
~Damn it~. âI donât ~know~,â he retorted. ~It was there. Right there~.
~â~Then how the hell do you expect me to know?â
âIsnât this your territory? Shouldnât you recognize the smells?â
Alexâs expression hardened as he took a step closer. âThis isnât my territory. Maybe ~you~ should know, maybe it was yours.â
âMine?â
Alex laughed. âSo Maya didnât mention that, huh?â
âMention what?â
âShe believes youâre an Alpha.â
~An Alpha~.
That would explain why Alexâs protective behavior towards Maya irritated him so much. It wasnât just because of their ~mate~ status.
~It was because he should be the one looking after her. Guiding her~.
Alpha.
Did it resonate with him?
âSo, I lived here?â
âPossibly. How the hell would I know?â
âWouldnât you have seen me?â
âThe territories are far enough apart that they donât overlap. Maybe it was a neutral area. I donât know all the wolves here. As long as no one messes with whatâs mine, I donât care. You donât seem like youâd pose much of a threat.â
He was deliberately provoking him, trying to goad him. Why? If he struck first, then he could explain ~why~ he fought back. He could justify it if Maya questioned him. Smart strategy, but he wouldnât give him the satisfaction.
âYou donât intimidate me. What does that say about you?â
âThat you still need some healing. Otherwise, youâd be more cautious.â
~Cautious~. Right.
Because being cautious was ~probably~ how he ended up half-buried and nearly dead, wasnât it?
Alexâs nostrils flared, anger flashing in his blue eyes. ~He wasnât accustomed to being challenged~. He was likely weighing his options, deciding what was ~the best~ course of action.
Julian braced himself, half-expecting Alex to pounce. His breathing became shallow, his body rigid as he shifted one leg back, leaning on it.
âWhy donât you do something useful for once and track the scent?â
That was all? No reaction? Just calmness? He noticed the rapid pulse in his neck, the clenching of his jaw as his hands balled into fists. Alex wanted to throw a punch and start a fight.
âIf I do, are you going to follow me like a lost puppy?â
Julian could see Alexâs eyes narrowing, a clear sign that he was hitting a nerve. He knew he needed to rein in his temper. After all, he was under Alexâs authority. He had to play by his rules because Maya didâand he couldnât abandon her.
His inner wolf wouldnât allow it.
âIf anyoneâs the lost puppy here, itâs you.â
A growl echoed in the room, but it wasnât from Alex. It was coming from deep within Julian.
~Ease up.~
His inner wolf was pulling him back. His physical form was weak, his mind was fractured: he might not stand a chance in a fight. But that rational thought did little to quell the surge of his blood, the pounding of his heart, or the adrenaline coursing through his veins.
~A good fight~.
It would rejuvenate him.
Was it the scent, teasing his inner fury, orâwas it Alexâs mere presence that was fueling his bloodlust?
But if he antagonized Alex, Maya could be the one to suffer.
~Damn it~.
He wasnât her mate. Yet their destinies were entwined. Every decision he wanted to make, her name echoed in his mind. If she was harmed, he would feel the pain. He couldnât exclude her from his thoughts.
His mind was a blank canvasâa page waiting to be written on. The only constant he had was ~her~. She made sense to him. She soothed him, she entertained himâ¦
She was hisâ¦
âFollow my lead, ~pup~.â
Julian heard Alexâs growl of protest, but it only served to fill him with a sense of triumph. Heâd toe the line as much as he could without overstepping it.
That should be enough to pacify the beast within him.
~For now~.
Once he could claim what was rightfully his, heâd give Alex a piece of his mind.
