Sylvesterâs words didnât quite make sense to me. âTheo is just a teenage boy whoâs tall, isnât he?â
âYou said he was a child.â
âOf course heâs a child, heâs younger than me.â
Sylvesterâs brows narrowed, his expression slowly darkening⦠but why? I didnât know what was going on in his mind. âAnyway, should we have a meal together? Sit down, Theo.â
âI havenât agreed to that yet.â
âSo you want me to just kick him out of the dining room?â There was a strange confrontation between Sylvester and I, while Irene and Theo stood in between us looking flustered. I would usually prefer to back out whenever possible, but this time I couldnât. Not in front of Theo. I had to plant the impression that I was protecting him. That way, he would feel compelled to follow me.
âWash him up for now and feed him later. I canât eat with him because of how bad he smells.â
âAnd suddenly you have a dogâs nose? What do you mean he smells? I canât smell anything.â Actually, I could, I was just pretending like I couldnât.
I reached for Theo with a smile. âI donât think itâs possible for us to have a meal together with my husband now, so follow Irene, wash up, and eat alone. Come and see me after that, got it?â
âI- I understand. Iâll do that.â Theo nodded gently. In the novel, Theo was described to be a fairly cold-blooded human being, but the Theo right now was pretty cute. As expected, all humans are adorable only when they are youngâI definitely wonât miss this moment in his childhood! Other than that, I also had to try to get close to Theo somehow and form a friendship with him, this friendship would definitely prove to be beneficial for me in the future.
Meanwhile, Theo, who had no idea what was going on inside me, just smiled nicely at me. Iâm sorry I had to do this, Theo, but I should be allowed to live, right? I waved my handkerchief sadly at Theo who followed behind Irene.
âYouâve been doing things that bother me lately,â Sylvesterâs voice appeared from behind me. Does he seriously have to keep attacking me at every second?
I glared at him, âWhy did you do that?â
âWhat wrong did I do?â Sylvester replied, wiping his mouth with a handkerchief, âItâs even weirder of you to bring in a poor child and suddenly let him sit at the dining table. What would become of me if I allowed that?â
âThat child is going to be a great knight in the future, so itâs better to be kind now.â
âNot a childâa young man. Heâs too old for you to be calling him a child.â
âWhatever! Are you upset because of his age?â
âWhoâs upset?â Sylvester turned his head and retorted, âYou shouldnât have been so misleading. I was fully expecting a little child.â
âAnd what does his age have to do with anything?â
âYouâre asking what does it matter if you let a boy whoâs about to come of age into our house?â
âYes? What are you trying to say?â I really didnât understand what Sylvester was implying, so of course I asked.
âYouâre not just ignorant, youâre completely deaf.â Just what do you gain from saying stuff like that? Couldnât you just explain it to me outright? I pursed my lips and shook my head.
âWhere did you learn to make such a cute face?â Sylvester burst into laughter. It was the first time Iâve ever seen him grin like that, so I looked at him with my eyes wide open. âI see youâve been adding more and more facial expressions into your list. You used to be as frozen as a sheet of ice.â
âIs that a compliment or an insult?â
âBoth.â
âUgh, seriously,â I spoke as if I was annoyed, but I was honestly somewhat relieved. I canât believe I was consoled by the word âcuteâ.
âSo, youâre not going to leave the house for the time being?â He seemed to be talking about the Crown Princeâs Prohibition, so I nodded.
â I canât help it. If I ever go out of here again, I donât know what will happen.â
âWell, the Crown Prince is a b*stard, after all.â Sylvester laughed and I followed suit. âAnyways, Iâm going out.â
I looked at him, wondering why he announced such a thing all of a sudden. âIs that so?â
Sylvester raised the corners of his mouth and stared at me instead of answering.
âWhat, are you bragging? Iâm not allowed to go out, but you are?â
It was ridiculous.

When Ophelia returned to her room, Irene ran to her as if she had waited for a long time. âThe boy is in the drawing room. I washed, fed, and sat him down.â
âWell done.â Ophelia winked at Irene and approached the mirror, tidying up her messy hair.
âHowâs the kid?â
âHow is he?â
âIâm asking you what his personality is like.â
âWellââ Irene crossed her arms, humming in thought. âIâm not sure yet, but he seems like a good kid. Seeing as he complimented the Madam.â
âSo heâs nice since he complimented me?â
âOh, no! Iâm sorry! I said something wrong!â Irene exclaimed, frightened and on her knees.
Ophelia waved her hand with a look of boredom. âThatâs enough, stop it,â she calmly responded and sat down on the chair.
âTie my hair.â
âAh, yes!â Irene hurried to the spot behind Ophelia. Her hands shook thinking of the mistake she just made, but she tried her best to stay as calm as possible. What kind of person was the Madam? She was the one who beat the maid who was in charge of her hair to death just because she used the wrong hairbrush on her! And once, she accidentally brought the wrong hairpin and the Madam dug the sharp pin into her scalp, telling her to try putting it on herself! Irene was beaten quite a lot by Ophelia, no, scratch that, she was beaten countless times.
âBut,â Irene thought carefully, âNow sheâs definitely a lot more flexible than before.â In the past, she would never have tolerated such a mistake. Sheâd immediately jump to beat her up, or even put her in jai, and yet now she just stares coldly without getting physical. Irene was caught off guardâitâs as if the Duchess has changed!
âI wonât hit you. Rather, I wonât be hitting anyone, including you. I promise you in my name.â There was no way the Madam would ever say this if she didnât change! âNo, it canât be.â Itâs impossible. How could a person change in a day? Even now, Irene still couldnât forget when Ophelia used to grab her hair. This memory makes it harder for her to not be on guard.
âYou read the newspaper, didnât you?â
âPardon?â Irene jumped a little in surprise and realized that it was not a big question, so she nodded in a hurry. âYes, yes. I saw it.â
âEveryone else, too?â
âYes, everyone saw it.â
âSo, what do you think?â Ophelia looked at Irene through the mirror and said, âMy good deeds are being covered in a big newspaper. How do you feel about it?â
Ireneâs eyes rolled around in all directions. What answer was she supposed to give to satisfy the Madam? Thump. Thump. Her heart started pounding, she thought sheâd be beaten if she answered wrong.
Gulp.
Irene answered carefully, âM-madam is amazingâ?â
Ophelia burst into laughter at Ireneâs words, âDonât lie to me. You donât even believe it, do you?â
âN-no, I reallyââ
âNo, I know no one will believe it.â Ophelia never expected anyone to believe the newspaper article. âThatâs why I called in Theo. Heâs the biggest proof of my good deeds.â Quite a few people have seen Theo ride the Ryzen carriage, causing them to believe that the article might actually be true. If the public knew that she was taking care of Theoâ âIâll be recognized for my good deeds.â
Ophelia wanted to break away from the evil girl image, so she decided it was the right time. âLet Theo sleep in the mansion for a while. Itâs better if you take care of him.â
ââYes?â
âSince youâre already doing well, keep adding on to that, okay?â She smiled and looked in the mirror. The low ponytail was straight and every strand of hair was in place. âWell done,â Ophelia slowly stood up and put her hand on Ireneâs shoulder, âThanks, Irene.â
Looking at Opheliaâs back slowly walking away from her, a thought appeared in Ireneâs mind,
âThe Madam might have actually changed.â
*******
âHave you been waiting for long?â Ophelia asked Theo, who was hovering around in the drawing room. Theo, who didnât even feel Opheliaâs presence, brought his hand up to his chest as if he was surprised. Then, he came to his senses and bowed to Ophelia.
âT- Thank you, Madam.â
âHmm?â Ophelia tilted her head.
