Chapter 138
Christian frowned when he saw that. He then cast a glance at Victoria, his gaze fixed on her dry lips for
a fraction of a second before he withdrew his gaze and exited the room.
Gabrielle immediately went to close the door. Her expression lightened, and she sat on the seat beside
them.
âI prepared some soup and porridge. Which one would you like to have?â Evelyn pointed to the two
thermal flasks on the table and asked.
Victoria wanted to tell them she didnât want any because she didnât have an appetite. However, when
she met Evelynâs gaze, she changed her mind. âIâll have the porridge.â
Gabrielle immediately stood up and filled a bowl of porridge, thereafter serving it to Victoria.
Victoria, however, really had no appetite for anything. She scooped a spoonful of porridge and brought
it near her mouth. After blowing on it, she only had a small sip. âHow long have you been here, Mrs.
Thatcher?â
âIâve just arrived.â Evelyn smiled and asked, âIs it hot?â
Victoria simply said it was fine and continued to eat her porridge.
âVictoriaââ Evelyn called.
âYes?â Victoria put the spoon down and looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn cast a quick glance at Gabrielle. Her lips moved, but no words came out.
âIâll buy some fruit.â Gabrielle took the hint and left.
The door closed, leaving only both Evelyn and Victoria in the room, and the former said, âYour parents
fought over you. Theyâre both getting divorced right now. The only thing holding up the divorce
certificate is the distribution of their assets.â
Victoriaâs hand trembled slightly when she heard that, and she almost dropped the bowl in her hand.
After a brief moment of silence, she let out a low hum and lowered her head to eat her porridge.
The porridge, which was supposed to be delicious, was not. In fact, it felt bitter, and she wasnât sure if it
was because of her illness or something else.
Looking at her, Evelyn sighed.
âThey couldnât agree on how to distribute the assets?â Victoria raised her head to look at Evelyn after
swallowing the food in her mouth.
âYes. Your mother wanted a 20% share of the assets, but your fatherâ¦â She gave a mocking smile and
said with disdain, âYour father wanted her to have nothing. He said that the Coleman Familyâs money
has nothing to do with your mother.â
In fact, Denise was the one from a wealthy background, whereas Glen was merely a pauper.
Both of them knew each other during their university days. After they graduated, they wanted to get
married, but Deniseâs parents did not allow it. However, Denise got pregnant out of wedlock
subsequently and insisted on only marrying Glen. Hence, her parents had no choice but to agree to
their marriage.
Denise was the only daughter of the Laurent Family. Two years after she got married with Glen, her
parents passed away in an accident. Following that, Glen took over the Laurent Familyâs business,
which was later renamed to the Coleman Group.
Victoria scoffed when she heard Evelynâs words. She then removed the spoon from the bowl and drank
the porridge directly from the bowl.
âYou donât need to finish it if you canât,â Evelyn took the bowl from Victoria and said.
Then, she placed the bowl on the table.
Victoria sat on the bed, her gaze lowered. Her gaze didnât reveal anything, but her hands were tightly
clutching her blanket, a smattering of porridge at the corners of her lips.
âDonât you have anything to say?â Evelyn took a tissue and wiped Victoriaâs lips.
âWhat else can I say?â Victoria raised her eyes, pursed her lips and continued, âNo matter what the
reason was, they will not divorce.â
Her father regarded his reputation highly. As such, he would never divorce her mother for fear of being
labeled a heartless and ungrateful man. Her mother, on the other hand, was already accustomed to
relying on her father. She would undoubtedly forgive her father if he relented and apologized.
âThatâs not necessary. Iâm sure you didnât expect your mother to divorce him because of you this time,
did you?â Evelyn took Victoriaâs hand in hers and stated solemnly, âAll children are their mothersâ flesh
and blood. Which mother could bear witnessing her childâs suffering?â
Victoria did not respond to that and she merely pursed her lips tighter.
At this moment, someone knocked on the door. âCome in,â Evelyn said.
Gabrielle walked in smilingly and placed the fruits she bought on the table.
âIâve grown older, and my body no longer compares to yours.â As Evelyn let go of Victoriaâs hand, she
smiled and commented, âIâm still tired from what happened last night. Iâm going back to rest now.â
Victoria nodded to that. âPlease go back and rest, Mrs. Thatcher.â
âIâll leave the porridge and the soup here. See you tomorrow,â Evelyn responded.
âYou donât have to visit me if youâre busy or tired. Iâm big enough to take care of myself. Donât worry.â
âYou grew up in my care; how could I not be worried?â Evelyn responded as she exited the room.
When she walked out, she noticed that Christian was still here. âDonât linger any longer. Before Victoria
is discharged, do not meet with her!â Evelyn muttered angrily.
âPlease ask the driver to send you back. Iâll just take a cab later,â Christian responded.
But Evelyn only gave him a sidelong glance. When she walked past him, she grumbled, âWhat have
you been doing all this whileâ¦â
Christian lowered his head and remained silent, his eyes filled with regret.
Meanwhile in the ward, Gabrielle shaped her right hand into a trumpet close to her mouth and pointed
with her other hand at the door. âMr. Thatcher has not yet left. Heâs standing at the door,â she muttered

âOkay,â Victoria responded absentmindedly.
Seeing that, Gabrielle cleared her throat and continued, her voice low, âMr. Thatcher rushed here once
he knew something happened to you, and he was fined a lot of money for speeding and running a few
red lights. Money may not be important to him, but his license has been revoked, and he must retake
the driving test to obtain a license!â
âI see.â Victoria regained her senses and responded casually, frowning.
Her reaction was so calm that Gabrielle couldnât stop herself from continuing talking. âMr. Thatcher
seems to like you a lot, Victoria. Itâs too bad you didnât notice how pale his face was when he found out
something had happened to youâ¦â
âStop mentioning him,â Victoria said as she clenched the bed sheets beneath her.
âHuh?â Gabrielle was taken aback. She then asked cautiously, âYou used to admire Mr. Thatcher a lot.
Donât you feel happy that he likes you too?â
âHe broke my leg, drove me to homelessness, and even humiliated me in the Delta Club. Is that how
he shows his liking of me? Why should I be happy?â Victoria scoffed. âI donât have masochistic
tendencies.â
To that, Gabrielle pursed her lips stiffly and chuckled awkwardly. âIâm sorry.â
âYou donât have to apologize. I should be thanking you instead. If it wasnât for you, I would be dead
now.â
Gabrielle couldnât tell if Victoria was being sincere or sarcastic. âVictoria, do you⦠do you think Iâm a
busybody?â
Victoria had wanted to die, but she was thwarted by Gabrielle.
âNo. I wanted to die, but you indeed saved me. These are two different matters. I sincerely appreciate
it.â Victoria then asked, âHow did you know I was stuck on the rooftop?â
Gabrielleâs expression darkened as soon as she heard that. âMarvin, that jerk, said he wanted to make
amends with me. But it turned out that after asking me out, he drugged me and offered me as a
welcome gift to his client.â
Before continuing, she lowered her head to wipe her tears. âDaisy appeared shortly after I returned at
around 1.00AM. She seemed to be acting strangely, so I asked around for your whereabouts and went
to the rooftop to look for you.â
