Chapter 79
Sitting on the bed, Victoria ate the dragon fruit silently. After all, she was never a natural socializer,
regardless if it was in the past or the present.
âThe hallmark of a good lawyer is to be able to argue properly, and not just to speak incessantly. How
many mistakes do you think your opposing lawyer would have uncovered with how tactless youâve
been speaking?â Matthew knocked Janice on her head.
With the knock from Matthew, Janice instantly turned quiet with her eyes whirled round, as though
Matthew had pressed the pause button on her. However, the silence only lasted for ten minutes before
she continued, âYour name is Victoria, right? Victoria, will you still be going back to work at Delta Club
after youâre discharged?â
âYes.â Victoriaâs eyes flickered with hints of gloom when she stopped eating the dragon fruit halfway
through, as she wasnât sure if her plan in seducing Christian would be successful. Even in the case
where she succeeded, she contemplated whether he would allow her to leave the club. There was still
the possibility that she would still be kept in the club to be humiliated after he was done playing around
with her. Nevertheless, there was no other way for her except for this plan, even if the chances of
success here were slim.
âHmm, you gotta go back, huhâ¦â Janice pondered hard, her baby face all scrunched up. Then, as
though a light bulb went off in her head, she jumped and hung onto Matthew with her arms around his
neck and her legs around his waist.
Seeing this, Victoria accidentally choked. Letting out a few coughs, she cleared her throat and wiped
off the dragon fruit stains at the corner of her mouth with a piece of tissue.
âGet down,â Matthew said with both his hands holding her, as he was afraid she would fall.
âCome on, Mr. Buckleyâ¦â With her arms around his neck, Janice swayed back and forth as she said in
a pampered manner, âArenât you and that Thatcher guy good friends? You should ask him to let her go!
Pretty please?â
Victoria was slightly surprised. She had heard that Christian had a friend who had become a lawyer.
However, because that friend of his had been studying abroad, she never got to meet him. I see, so itâs
him. Then, her eyes flickered as she thought that it might work in her favor if Matthew was willing to
speak to Christian on her behalf.
As Matthew cast a skeptical glance at Victoria, he pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses that were going
to fall due to Janiceâs moving about. âGet down first.â
âPromise me first!â Janice refused to let go. âMr. Buckley, isnât a lawyerâs duty to punish evil and uphold
righteousness? Look at how badly Christian bullied Victoria. You have to help her!â
Matthew calmly corrected Janice. âYouâre talking about prosecutors and the police. Lawyers only look
at where the money is.â
Seeing that Matthew had no intention of helping her, Victoria wanted to express her appreciation for
Janiceâs intentions, but she held her tongue in the end. Clenching the bed sheet tightly, she closed her
eyes as her breathing turned ragged. She could see that Matthew was fond of his apprentice. So, if
there was a chance that he agreed to Janiceâs request, then her chances of leaving Delta Club would
increase.
âMr. Buckley!!â Janice raised her voice. âIf you donât promise me, then I wonât go down!â
Matthew stood still. âThen, you can just keep hanging this way. Donât complain to me when your arms
become sore.â
Instantly, Janice became listless and muttered, âNo wonder youâre good friends with that cruel and
ruthless capitalist of a man. Youâre birds of a featherâ¦â
Victoria swallowed the dragon fruit in her mouth, a glimmer of gloom flashing past her eyes once more.
âThank you for helping me again, Miss Mooney. But, you shouldnât make things difficult for Mr. Buckley.
He must have his reasons for not agreeing.â
Janice then let go of Matthewâs neck and dropped to the floor before she squirmed. âActually, my
mentor isnât a bad man. He dropped the lawsuit with just a word from his parents saying to not interfere
with your brotherâs case.â
âYou guys dropped the case because of Mr. Buckleyâs parents?!â Victoria jerked her head up and
momentarily forgot herself.
Noticing Victoria was getting agitated, Janice became puzzled. âYup. My mentorâs parents seem to
have friendly relations with your parents, so when they told my mentor not to interfere with your
brotherâs case, he immediately dropped it,â she said as though she was rapping. Then, she added,
âWhy do you ask?â
âItâs nothing.â Victoria put down the dragon fruit. Although she had managed to get a hold of her
expression, her hands were still tightly clenching the bed sheet underneath the blanket.
Christianâs plan of killing two birds with one stone was brilliant. Not only did he avoid sowing discord
with Matthew due to Vincentâs case, but he had even gained a piece of new land in Glogan from the
Coleman Family at no cost.
Janice let out a long sigh as she felt embarrassed and guilty that she couldnât help Victoria. Then, with
a twinkle in her eyes, she excused herself to use the restroom and immediately left.
Taking a glance at the restroom in the ward, Victoria pursed her lips.
âHow did you get to know Janice?â Matthew walked up to the door and closed it.
Victoria raised her head to glance at the man before she hung her head again as she put down the
dragon fruit she just picked up. âI was working in Delta Club. Miss Mooney was a customer. Thatâs
where we happened to meet,â she said indifferently.
âWas it a coincidence or a deliberate meeting?â Matthew pushed his glasses up. As the sunlight spilled
into the room, his glass lens reflected the light, which concealed the novelxo.com fast
updateexpression in his eyes.
As the faint scent of disinfectant filled the room, the supposedly relaxing image of the white sheets,
white walls, and beige flooring was slightly harsh right now.
Propping her hands on the bed, Victoria moved toward the direction of her pillow. âThe new secretary of
the municipal committee had just taken up the post when I first met Miss Mooney. It was during the
time when the news hadnât even been reported yet.â Then, with a self-deprecating smile, she
continued, âDo you think a criminal without any background like me, who just got out of prison, would
be able to obtain information about the new secretary?â
âI wouldnât say youâre someone without background.â Matthew slowly peeled a banana. âAlthough the
Coleman Family had severed ties with you, you seemed to be still in contact with your brother.â
With a slight frown, she asked, âAssuming I know that Miss Mooney is the daughter of the new
secretary, how would I get her into coming to Delta Club?â
âSheâs been protected by her parents all her life and had only graduated two months before. She
wouldnât know how complicated the real world is. All she has is her passion for helping others.â
Matthew took a bite of the banana and continued slowly, âBut, that doesnât mean that there are no
prudent people around her.â
Victoria sighed as she threw the unfinished dragon fruit into the trash can. âThen, I would like for that
prudent person to properly persuade her from caring about a murderer such as myself. Iâm
undeserving.â
âHappy to be of service.â Matthew raised his brow slightly and finished the banana in several bites
before he threw it into the trash can. âHowever, she is a stubborn girl, so my persuasion might not work.
For that reason, should you ever run into her again in the future, I hope you will try to avoid her as
much as you can.â
Suppressing the anger she felt, Victoria said indifferently, âI would also like you to tell her my thanks
and also to tell her thatâ¦â ⦠thoughtless kindness may be burdensome to others. However, she
stopped herself from finishing the sentence. âJust tell her my thanks. Iâm tired and would like to rest
now. Please leave, Mr. Buckley.â
âThank you for your understanding. In return, I will put in a few good words about you to Christian.
However, I wonât guarantee what he will do after that.â Having said that, he walked toward the door.
Momentarily stunned, Victoria looked at the back of the man and said, âThank you.â
But there was no response to her thanks.
After Matthew left the ward, the final rays of sunshine were also isolated from the room upon the
closing of the door
