The team comes to a halt after the assistant manager calls for a time out.
The air is grim like the grey clouds, and the schoolâs pitch appears like a scene from an apocalypse â minus the bodies.
Our football team attracts all the ladiesâ attention. They always appear at our practice, calling our names and cheering us on. I grin at them as they stand by the sidelines, and they wave and scream my number, thirteen.
Thatâs right â my number. Needless to say, Iâm the most popular. My fucker friends can claim otherwise, but theyâre wrong, so they donât count.
I head to the bench with Aiden and Cole and snatch a bottle of water before Cole can get it. Iâm in the middle of downing it when I meet those black eyes that should belong in some gothic tale about black magic and sucking peopleâs souls into nothingness.
Teal stands behind the school stadiumâs barrier with Elsa and a miserable-looking Kim â because Xander isnât here and sheâs kind of too soft for that fucker.
She waves at me anyway â Kim, I mean â and I wink, grinning even though Iâm close to crushing the bottle of water between my fingers.
Teal isnât even watching us. Sheâs focused on Coach, whoâs yelling at a freshman, asking him if he wants to be on this team or not.
Her phone is snuggled between her fingers, almost forgotten, but not really. Soon enough, her concentration goes back to whatever voodoo spell is in there.
After her display at dinner last week, sheâs been acting as if nothing happened, as if she didnât fuck up my fifteen-year plan that includes not getting married.
Nothing is over, though.
That tiny girl with black hair and eyes, and possibly a black heart, has riled up a part of me Iâve been keeping hidden for so long I actually thought maybe itâd start disappearing, but nope, it came back reeling from the dead.
And now sheâll fucking pay for it.
âWhat has that bottle done to you?â Aiden asks from his position on the bench. Heâs also sipping from a sports drink, but his entire attention is on Elsa. Thereâs even a slight smirk on his lips; his male ego is happy sheâs made it a habit to show up to watch him practice after being against it for months.
Cole sits beside him, wiping the side of his face with a towel. Weâre all wearing blue Elites jerseys and shorts since weâre starters and are playing against the second string, which will take over next year once weâve all graduated.
Knox is jesting with the goalkeeper, and I seize the opportunity his absence provides. I barge between Cole and Aiden and wrap an arm around each of their shoulders, grinning at them suggestively.
âWithdrawals, Astor?â Aiden raises an eyebrow.
âNope, been smoking my usual stash just fine. Thanks for asking, though.â
âHe meant sex withdrawals,â Cole elaborates. âYou havenât thrown a party in a week since your parents are back.â
âNah, Iâm doing fine.â Lie â about the partying, not the sex part.
âIf you were, you wouldnât be clingy like a stripper.â Aiden glares at me. âNot interested.â
âFuck you, King,â I say, but I donât remove my arm.
âI might be interested.â Cole raises an eyebrow. âDepending on the circumstances.â
âYou keep your kinky shit away from me, Captain,â I warn.
âAre you sure?â Cole drawls. âYou never know when itâll be useful.â
His gaze strays to the spectators and he smiles at Teal. She tips her head in acknowledgment before focusing on her phone.
The fuck?
I stare between him and her then back again. Now that I think about it, Cole and Teal have been getting disgustingly close for some time now. Itâs almost unnoticeable, but heâs possibly the only one amongst the horsemen â or the entire male population â that she exchanges words with.
In the beginning, I thought it was because theyâre both nerds, but even if I donât know her â yet â I know Cole. He doesnât take a step without calculating a thousand years ahead â no kidding, heâs probably writing a financial plan for his fourth generation by now.
Cole is kind on the outside, but he doesnât actually let people get close. The fact that he did with her isâ¦interesting. Interesting for me because that means heâll give me indispensable information.
âWhat do you know about Teal?â I ask them both, because Aiden practically lives at Elsaâs house now and might know more about her than he lets on.
âIf Marquis de Sade and Snow White had an offspring, itâd be her,â Aiden says.
âWhat else?â I probe.
âWhy are you asking us about your fiancée?â Cole nudges my side.
I grin. âIâm trying to get to know her and figure out what type of flowers she likes.â
âShe prefers dark chocolate.â Aiden appears serious. âElsa buys her packs all the time.â
âGive me more. I want to woo her.â I wiggle my brows.
âCouldâve fooled me.â Cole smirks.
âYou know something, donât you?â I narrow my eyes at him.
âI might.â
âTell me.â
âWhy would I?â
âBecause weâre friends.â
âI might be friends with Teal, too.â
âI came first.â
âNow youâre starting to sound like a clingy ex.â Aiden points his bottle at me.
I flip him off and face Cole, speaking in a dramatic tone. âRemember all the shit I did for you?â
âLike what?â
âLike throwing parties so you could shag and no one would hear the screams.â
He raises an eyebrow.
âWhat? You thought I didnât hear them?â I grin.
âTold you, Captain.â Aiden smirks.
âYou too, King.â I squeeze his shoulder. âI might have some footage.â
âNo, you donât.â Aiden scoffs. âIf you did, you wouldâve used it for your cause about now.â
Fuck. I really shouldâve kept some footage. Surely Lars and his conniving mind wouldâve made it happen. He might even have an entry about it in his little black book.
âBesidesâ¦â Cole tilts his head. âWhy should we do the work for you? Whereâs the fun in that?â
Itâs times like these I wish Xander was here. His playfulness balances their arsehole behaviour, but he had to fuck it up with alcohol and disappear for a while.
Wait, is it because Iâm surrounded by these two fuckers that Iâm starting to have these buried, unusual thoughts?
Those are only excuses and you know it.
âWho told you I havenât done my homework?â I smile. âIâm a lot more than noble. Iâm the nobility itself, and thereâs a manual that says we always get what we want.â
âAnd yet you still canât find an answer.â Aiden cocks his head too, so now I have two pairs of eyes judging me.
âOf course I can.â Lie.
Iâve watched Teal for a week. Sheâs either in a âfuck offâ mode or an âI donât careâ mode. She doesnât smile, doesnât do any club activities. Her only friends are Elsa and Kim, and she rarely speaks. Her head is usually buried in her phone, reading articles about medieval torture devices.
I charmed Mrs Abbot, the librarian, and found out which books Teal borrowed from the schoolâs library. Theyâre all about wars. Every last fucking one of them.
Why would the nerd only read about wars? Who fucking knows. Cole does read about war, but thatâs not all. He has philosophy and psychology books. It speaks to his personality a little.
What does it mean if you only read about wars? That youâre fucked up, thatâs what, but that conclusion still doesnât give me any way in with her.
Me being with other girls didnât bother her. Iâve hugged a few, slapped a few on the arse when she was in view, and she just walked past me as if I and the girls didnât exist.
Being a dick didnât work either. I made sure to slam into her and made her fall to her arse. She merely pulled herself up, gathered her books, and continued on her way as if nothing happened.
Her lack of reaction is beginning to grate on my fucking nerves. Her disinterest and mighty attitude has started to scrape against my walls, and even I donât know how Iâll act if those walls somehow end up falling and letting everything break loose.
âYouâre used to girls falling at your feet.â Coleâs voice pulls me out of my head. âItâs time someone tells you no.â
âShe didnât say no â she said yes.â The fact that I donât know why sheâs so insistent about this bloody marriage is probably why Iâm on edge.
Sure, she wants to help Ethan, but with her psycho personality, Iâm almost certain thatâs not all.
I focus on her again as she stares at her phone.
What the fuck are you hiding, ma belle?
âYes can mean no.â Aiden takes a sip of his drink. âEver thought about that?â
âWhat do you mean?â I ask.
âYouâve known me for years, havenât you, Astor?â
âI have.â
âYou know when to stay away and when to get close, and you just act like you donât know sometimes to be a dick.â
âWho? Moi?â I feign innocence.
âLike that.â Aiden points at me. âYour game is strong.â
âWhat heâs trying to say isâ â Cole twirls his finger â âthink with the other side of your brain. Let it loose.â
I grin, and my cheeks hurt with the motion. âNo idea what youâre talking about.â
âYouâll have to figure it out. Otherwise, youâll just continue to lose.â Cole speaks in a calm tone. âEither you make the first move or you have to follow someone elseâs first move.â
In other words, either I go all the way or I lose.
âAnd think about the kinky stuff, and theâ¦screams.â Coleâs lips curve in a suggestive smirk. âIt might come in handy.â
âReal talk, Captain.â I dig my fingers into his shoulder. âWhat will it take for you to tell me what you know?â
âInformation,â Aiden says matter-of-factly. âGive him something he doesnât know about the subject of his obsession, though I doubt you have any valuables.â
I grin, and this time, itâs genuine. Since I found out about Coleâs hidden tendencies and figured another thing out, I planned to hold on to this piece of information until I needed a serious favour from him, but Iâm at the end of a road here, and I need to carve a way out. âI might have.â
Coleâs head tilts. âWhat?â
âUne seconde, mon ami. If I give you what you want, will you give me what I need?â
âI might.â
âNot good enough for the shit I have. Itâs all documented and with evidence.â
He narrows his eyes before quickly going back to normal. âFine.â
Of course Cole would choose his battle instead of anyone elseâs. Heâs Cole, after all.
Friends? Fuck that. Those donât exist when it comes to himself.
âYou go first, Captain.â
Teal insisted she doesnât have a secret, but as I said, everyone does.
And when I have hers, nothing will save her from me.
Sheâll wish sheâd never said yes.
