Chapter 1040:
He understood all too well â speaking of this would sign his death warrant.
The Lloyd family was adept at burying both bodies and secrets.
âImpressive. Both of you.â Brook surveyed the carnage, his voice cold and clipped.
He had witnessed enough bloodshed in his life to render him impervious to fear.
Yet, seeing his son and Allison fight the bodyguards ruthlessly without hesitation still irritated him somewhat.
The truth was clear â Allison was capable of taking a life.
This woman was not what she appeared to be.
âKellan, as your father, I never knew you were so adept at combat,â Brook said, his eyes narrowing. âOr was your leg injury just a charade?â Doubt twisted in his mind, feeding on his paranoia.
Could Kellan have been involved in his other sonâs death?
After all, Kellan was the only survivor of the Burned Islands tragedy.
âA charade?â Kellan repeated with a bitter laugh.
His gaze was as cold as a winter storm.

âIf it had been fake, I wouldnât have spent over a decade in a wheelchair.â
A dark intensity clung to him, his expression sharp and unyielding, like a blood-soaked demon.
âKellan, the past is behind us. Iâm here now,â Allison said, gripping his hand tightly.
Her voice was low but firm. âEverything we lost, weâll reclaim someday.â
Nova covered her mouth, pretending to be aghast.
âWe could have settled this peacefully. Why choose violence?â Inside, she was gleeful, knowing Brookâs hostility towards Allison and Kellan would only grow.
Brookâs face hardened as he tapped his cane against the floor. âYouâve certainly surprised me today,â he said coldly. âBut donât think I canât handle the likes of you two.â
Allisonâs face remained calm and collected as she toyed with the pendant of her necklace, her lips curling into a faint smile.
âYour bodyguards donât seem very capable. It really makes one doubt if personal safety can even be assured,â she remarked with a subtle jab as she looked at Brook.
She stood out starkly among the refined ladies of their circle.
Unlike them, Allison carried an untamed energy that radiated from her, a raw edge so intense that it deterred anyone from getting too close. Brookâs expression darkened ominously, his presence growing heavier, like the weight of an impending landslide.
âMs. Clarke, if you refuse to return the necklace, perhaps itâs time to involve the police,â he threatened.
The Lloyd family held sway over both the legal and shadowy underworlds, but their dominance in lawful circles was what truly struck fear in others.
