Chapter 1179:
Hoyt had undergone tests before and knew his sperm quality was poor, making the chance of having a child slim. That was why, when he learned Melany could be carrying his baby, he clung to that small possibility.
âAnd you, Miss Johnson, if you try to fool me again, I wonât go easy on you like I did today!â
Hoytâs words carried a clear and deliberate warning. He was well aware of Melanyâs cunning nature, yet he doubted sheâd lie about the child.
âColton, youâll regret this â I swear it! No one has ever dared to hit me, and youâll pay the price!â Hoyt noticed Coltonâs unhinged demeanor intensify the moment he finished, prompting him to gulp nervously. With that, Hoyt hurriedly made his exit.
In no time, the atmosphere returned to an eerie stillness.
âWhatâs the deal between you and Hoyt?â Coltonâs gaze hardened as he glared at Melany. His fists remained tightly clenched, streaks of blood still visible on his fingers. The earlier assault on Hoyt had left Colton seething with a murderous fury. His anger had nothing to do with Melany. The mention of Allison had been the true trigger. Her name stabbed at a buried ache in his heart. Each thought of Allison dredged up memories of the wrongs heâd inflicted and the coldness heâd shown her back during their marriage. He was the one who had driven her out of his life entirely.
Melany, however, remained oblivious to his inner turmoil. In her mind, Coltonâs reaction stemmed from mere suspicion. Taking a deep breath, she steadied herself. After her words, she feigned an impulsive move to smash her head against the pillar.
âColton, if you wonât believe me, Iâd rather die than live with this doubt! I love you, and Iâll prove it with my death!â
Predictably, Colton intervened swiftly, stopping her before she could act. A fleeting warmth spread through Melanyâs chest.
She convinced herself that Colton still harbored feelings for her. But in the next moment, that hope was ruthlessly shattered.

âI donât care who youâre interested in, but you better stay away from Allison. Stop targeting her.â Coltonâs expression darkened as he spoke. âI already know what went down at the banquet hall. Melany, Iâm fully aware of what youâre scheming. If you want to avoid being thrown out of the Stevens family home, keep your distance until this child is born. What happens to you after that is none of my concern. Itâs my mother whoâs fond of children, not me.â
Coltonâs feelings for the child were driven by a sense of obligation, not affection.
âColton, everything that happened today was my mistake.â
Melany had just begun to relax, but his words immediately sent her into a panic. Was Colton truly this indifferent? Her gaze shifted to him, filled with hurt and disbelief.
âBut Iâm truly innocent! I just wanted you to get that project for your grandfatherâs sake.â
But Colton had already run out of patience with her excuses. He ignored her pleading, pulled out his phone, and dialed the driver, saying, âPick her up.â
The driver arrived shortly after, pulling up in front of them.
âGet her back to the Stevens family home, now.â
Then, Colton turned to Melany, his voice cold as he warned her, âDonât make any more contact with the Lloyd family without my say-so.â Melany could feel his anger, so she bit back her frustration and murmured, âOkay⦠I understand.â
She had hoped Colton would at least come with her. Once they got back to the Stevens family home, she planned to figure out how to make things right. But when the car door opened, Colton showed no sign of getting in. He merely ordered the driver to take her away.
