Chapter 1236:
âIâm very sorry, maâam, but I canât find any information associated with that number.â
He had encountered this kind of thing many times before. A good number of people would try anything and everything for a shot at getting in. This wasnât the first time someone had tried forging membership cards, only to be exposed in the end.
He had initially thought that Allison and Kellan were both wealthy and influential, but it seemed like they would stoop to such levels, too.
Melany was the first to react, her lips curling into a devious grin. âReally, Ms. Clarke, thereâs no need for you to put on a show in front of us. Why donât you just let Mr. Lloyd spend seven hundred thousand to get you a card?â
Colton turned to her abruptly, his eyes narrowing. âRemember what I told you.â
âFine,â Melany muttered sullenly. âI wasnât trying to cause trouble. I just think itâs only right for me to offer help to someone who needs it. I guess Ms. Clarke is just too proud to accept my offer. I mean, thereâs nothing wrong with not having a membership card to begin with. You can just admit it. Why lie?â
She still had more to say, but had to bite her tongue when she noticed Coltonâs gaze growing colder by the second. When one was no longer favored, anything they said or did could easily be taken the wrong way.
Colton, too, hadnât expected Allison to act this way, but he understood that women greatly valued their image. âI apologize for being curt with you, Allison. Please believe me when I say that I never meant to insult or embarrass you.â
Colton thought that he might have overstepped and put too much pressure on Allison.
âWhy donât we have Mr. Lloyd get a membership card first, and then we can all go in together?â He mentioned the business-related matters deliberately, attempting to box her in. âWe still need to figure out whatâs happening with the distributor.â
As soon as Colton finished speaking, he felt a sharp, burning gaze directed at him. Colton turned to find Kellanâs piercing eyes fixed on him.
Your next adventure is at g al n ovels . con
âYou really donât understand human language, do you? Allison and I do not associate with people who fail to show us respect.â Though Kellanâs lips were curled in a faint smile, the threat in his voice was unmistakable. âAllison already said sheâs a member of this golf course, and thatâs the end of it. You should know better than jumping to conclusions. If youâre not careful, you might get ahead of yourself and regret it later.â
Colton felt his face flush with embarrassment.
He never truly believed that Allison was a club member; he had assumed she was merely trying to save face. But after the brief exchange with Kellan, Colton began to realize something.
Even if he doubted Allisonâs claim, he shouldnât have called her out in front of everyone.
âAllison, I didnât mean to imply that youâre lying. Itâs just that sometimesââ
âMr. Stevens,â Allison interrupted him before he could finish. âWhether you believe me or not is of no importance to me.â
She had faced similar situations before. It didnât matter what the circumstances were, or what she had done or hadnât doneâColton had never fully trusted her.
It used to bring her sorrow and heartbreak, but after enduring it for so long, she was only left with disappointment.
But then she met Kellan, and she learned that not everyone was like Colton. Kellan had always chosen to trust her unconditionally. And every time she looked back, he was there, ready to offer his support.
