Chapter 1301:
The color drained from Gordonâs face. He knew her very well, all right. She had spoken plainlyâif they got entangled in the future, she wouldnât hesitate to abandon him. She wouldnât even be his friend anymore.
Her words struck him like a physical blow.
âYou knowâ¦â Gordon started to say. She knew that the thing he feared the most was being abandoned.
There was no need to finish his sentence. Gordon knew then that he had completely lost. The thought of not even being friends with Allison almost sent him spiraling.
âIâm sorry. I promise, I wonât act like this again.â His pain was evident in his trembling voice. It was almost like a hand was slowly squeezing the life out of his heart. âAllison, please donât abandon me.â
Allison exhaled slowly, her face blank. âWe are friends, Gordon. And I am your leader. Our relationship wonât change, unless you force my hand.â
She was drawing a clear line between them. His hands were tied.
âI understand.â
Gordon had never felt more vulnerable than he did right there and then. Kellan had slipped into the room unnoticed in the middle of their conversation. He came up behind Allison now and wrapped an arm around her waist, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
âExcuse me, Mr. Herbert, but we have an appointment with my future in-laws. Theyâre waiting for us at the hotel. You may take your leave now.â
Gordon could only stare at him, speechless.
Kellan was basically telling him to get lost.

âAllison, can I go too?â Gordon looked at Allison with a pitiful expression. âI promise I wonât cause any trouble.â
Though Kellan wasnât quite sure what had transpired between them, he trusted Allison completely. He could also sense the tension hanging in the air. Gordon appeared genuinely dejected.
Kellan, on the other hand, felt a slight spark of amusement. âAllisonâs parents are naturally magnanimous and wonât mind it, but Mr. Herbert, you should be smart.â
Gordon suppressed his frustration, his lips tight. âThat depends on how you define it.â
âEnough.â
Allisonâs voice cut through the tension.
âGordon, if you want to go, go change your clothes first. Then wait for us at the hotel. I still have things to discuss with him.â
âOkay.â
Despite his reluctance, Gordon had no choice but to leave. He knew all too well that he and Allison were an impossible pair. A moment of solitude was exactly what he needed to regain his composure.
Once Gordon left, Allison furrowed her brows, her voice turning serious as she asked Kellan, âHas Verrucktâs body been found?â Gordon had searched before, but there had been no trace. So, later, sheâd asked Kellan to send a team for a larger search operation.
âNo.â Kellanâs expression grew somber. âBut the cliff there is steep, with jagged rocks lining the mountainside. If someone fell into the water, theyâd likely be devoured by fish. In the forest, there are wolves and other animals. Itâs hard to believe he could have survived.â
