Chapter 491:

What on earth was so important that it required a café meeting? Was it about romance? Love, perhaps?
Either way, the thought twisted like a knife in his chest, tightening as though his heart were caught in an iron vice.
Seeing the tension building, Gordonâs expression sharpened, and his eyes glinted with a smirk. âWell, Mr. Lloyd, you did meet Miss Perry at a café, didnât you? So it seems thereâs no reason for anyone to be shocked that Allison and I might do the same.â
Gordon tilted his head, his gaze flicking to Carole before he sighed mockingly. âToo bad she doesnât hold a candle to Allison. Sheâs coarse, to put it politely. Surprising, isnât it, Mr. Lloyd? That this is your taste?â
From the start, Gordon had no intention of playing nice. The moment he saw Carole purposefully blocking his path, heâd marked her as trouble.
And her incessant jabs at Allison only made his distaste for her deepen.
He chuckled arrogantly and added, âTruly, some people are rotten beneath the skin.â
Carole, who had been trying to fade into the background, could no longer keep quiet.
Yes, Gordon was the mayorâs son, but she couldnât let him insult her in front of Kellan. âMr. Herbert, I wonât claim to match Ms. Clarkeâs beauty, and youâre welcome to critique me all you like. But Kellan? Thatâs where I draw the line.â
Her words were careful, standing up for Kellan with a hint of dignity.
After all, this was her chance to win his favor, regardless of what it might cost her to go against the Herbert family. âYouâre going too far!â
But Kellan remained as impassive as ever, while Gordon only sneered.
âAnd what gives you the right to address me like that?â Gordonâs gaze swept over Carole, looking at her as if she were beneath notice, his smile venomous. âTsk! Hideous, truly hideous.â
âYouâ¦!â
Caroleâs face turned beet red with fury. She prided herself on her beauty; no one had dared to insult her so brazenly before.
Yet, she had to swallow her anger, as Gordonâs status made him untouchable.
Most frustrating of all, Kellan didnât move to defend her.
âMs. Clarke, arenât you going to intervene?â Caroleâs voice turned pleading, her gaze fixed on Allison with a hurt expression. âYou seem close with Mr. Herbert. Surely, heâd listen if you asked him to stopâ¦â
She chose her words carefully, aiming to redirect the conflict back onto Allison. And, of course, they were meant for Kellan to hear.
She wanted Kellan to hear that there was clearly something suspicious between Allison and Gordon!
But Allison simply gave a cool smile. âFunny you should mention connections, Miss Perry. From what I understand, you and Mr. Lloyd are much closer. Didnât you say his grandmother owes quite a debt to your family?â
