Chapter 519:
Melanyâs smile faltered for a beat. Before she could respond, Allison added lazily, âMiss Prescott, you sure donât have the best eye for recruits.â
Amor shrugged, unfazed. âItâs only a million. Iâm just here to enjoy myself. Even if sheâs⦠less than competent, I can afford to let her play along.â
Melanyâs smile grew strained. She couldnât help the feeling that both of them were humiliating her.
âGood luck, Mrs. Stevens,â Allison added with a meaningful smile. âDonât lose everything.â
Melanyâs face hardened, but with so many eyes on them, she held her tongue.
The dealer shuffled the deck, moving deliberately as everyone watched. The game began, and players turned over their cards one by one.
Despite her inexperience, Melany seemed to have extraordinary luck. She managed to get a pair on her first round, prompting her to grin. âI guess luck is on my side tonight,â she said.
Amor, on the other hand, was effortlessly lucky. In just four rounds, she scored three pairs, drawing murmurs of admiration from onlookers.
Meanwhile, Allisonâs luck soured quickly. Six rounds in, and she still hadnât scored even a single pair.
Fay, who had been watching with barely contained malice, seized the opportunity to taunt her. âI thought you were just playing modest. But it looks like your luckâs slipping.â
Conversation broke out among the crowd.
âI donât see any chance Scarlet Snake can win. Surely Miss Prescott will be the winner!â
âRight? Iâm lucky Miss Prescott let me off without embarrassment. Sheâs really good at this!â
Someone else added, âHeh, the only person who should be embarrassed is the snake without a single pair!â
âI think sheâs just pretending again.â
Watching from nearby, Colton clenched his fists. His eyes remained glued to Allison despite Melanyâs presence at the table. He felt conflicted. He had come to watch for some fun, to regain some dignity, yet here he was, anxious for her. Would she lose?
But Allison showed no sign of concern, continuing to turn over her cards. She still hadnât scored.
âYou seem a little unlucky tonight, Scarlet Snake,â Amor mocked, turning over another card.
She played with steady precision, seemingly confident. After all, she had the cards marked and memorized. By the tenth round, she had six points.
Melany, meanwhile, appeared more composed. She wasnât spending her own money, and her results reflected it. By the end, sheâd scored just one point and lost all her chips.
âIâm out,â she announced with a carefree smile. âI guess Iâll go shopping with my husband. You all go on without me.â
