Chapter 592:
She then forced a smile that never quite reached her eyes, hiding the storm inside.
âI represent the Stevens family, Miss Green. If you proceed, youâll have made an enemy of all of us.â
Rebecca, casually twirling a lock of her hair, laughed â light, carefree, and utterly dismissive.
âLindy, donât be ridiculous. You donât have the authority to speak for the entire Stevens family. Besides,â she added with a casual shrug, âeven if I offend you, what could the Stevens family possibly do to me?â
Lindyâs retort faltered, the words stuck in her throat. She knew she couldnât deny the truth of Rebeccaâs statement.
After all, Rebecca wasnât just anyone â she was the only daughter of a powerful real estate mogul. She was untouchable in her own right.
In contrast, the Stevens family, with their old money and waning influence, seemed like little more than a shadow by comparison. Rebecca leaned back, casually spreading her hands and sending a triumphant wink at Allison.
âAllison, darling, what do you think of my little plan?â
Allison, who had been standing silently by her side, couldnât suppress a malicious glint in her eyes.
Rebecca knew that Lindy had tormented her best friend, Allison, for years, and now was the perfect moment for a little revenge.
âI think itâs brilliant,â Allison replied, the words coated with more than a hint of mockery. âBut I wonder⦠those who claim theyâll do anything for their loved ones â will they actually follow through when the moment comes?â
A murmur rippled through the crowd as soon as Allison finished speaking.
âDamn. Seven hundred thousand for a slap? Thatâs a pretty sweet deal. Someone could pay off a lot of debt with that!â
âHell, if I could settle my grudges and get paid for it, Iâd be all in.â
âThose two were begging earlier. They wouldnât back down from a slap, would they?â
The whispers pricked at Lindy, her face flushing with fury. How dare they mock her so openly? How dare they reduce her pain to nothing more than a transaction?
Allison tilted her head, the smile never leaving her face. âHave you made up your minds?â
It was clear that she was enjoying this, giving them a taste of their own medicine.
After all, hadnât Lindy been the one to try to manipulate the public and pressure her morally in the past?
Melany, ever the opportunist, didnât refuse. Instead, her voice held a note of calculated curiosity. âAllison, you will keep your word, wonât you?â
She needed the assurance for her scheme.
âSo, if we slap each other, the moneyâs ours, right?â
âOf course,â Allison answered.
Melany drew in a deep breath, as though preparing for something momentous.
