Chapter 619:
Before she could finish, sharp smacks echoed through the air. Rebecca had struck her, hard and swift, cutting Lindyâs sentence off in a series of stinging slaps.
âKeep up the slander, and this is what youâll get,â Rebecca snapped, unable to stomach Lindyâs venomous insults any longer.
The sharp smacks left red welts, and fresh blood marred Lindyâs face where it hadnât even healed yet.
âYou bitch, how dare you hit meââ Lindy staggered back, her fury mounting as she raised her hand to retaliate.
But before she could, Rebecca smoothly intercepted, tripping her with a swift motion.
Lindy flailed, losing her balance, and with a clumsy splash, she plunged into the river. As she bobbed up, her once-perfect makeup ran in streaks down her face, her hair plastered in wet clumps, making her look like a drenched mess.
âHelp⦠please, someone help!â she sputtered, gasping.
Rebecca watched her floundering with a cold laugh. âMrs. Stevens, maybe a little dip will teach you to watch that sharp tongue!â
There was nothing Rebecca loathed more than the sting of malicious rumors. Satisfied, she brushed off her hands as if wiping away dirt, then turned to Allison.
âDonât worry, love. If she dares to cross you again, Iâll be here.â
Allisonâs tone was unreadable, laced with a subtle edge. âI doubt sheâll find the courage for a second time.â
Melany, who had watched the scene in horrified silence, finally found her voice. Fearful she could be next, she tried to appeal to Allison.
âHow can you just stand by and let Miss Green push Lindy into the water? She could have been seriously hurt!â
Kellan, who had been observing quietly, cut in with a raised brow. âPushed? How do you know Mrs. Stevens was pushed? Looked like she fell in all on her own!â
Melany stammered, âBut⦠everyone sawââ
Before she could finish, the onlookers took a collective step back.
âI didnât see a thing. Donât go making things up,â one muttered.
âMe neither. Mrs. Stevens must have just lost her footing.â
âMaybe she just slipped and went for an unexpected swim,â another remarked.
It was clear that the crowd had chosen their side. They all knew how these two were, so they just acted like they didnât see anything. No one was about to cross Kellan, and besides, they all knew Lindyâs and Melanyâs tricks.
Melanyâs mouth opened in disbelief, her frustration mounting.
Were they all pretending?
Meanwhile, Lindy was still struggling in the water, her cries becoming more frantic. âSomeone, please, get me out of here!â
Darrel, his patience worn thin, finally ordered, âAlright, enough. You, go pull Mrs. Stevens out.â
