Chapter 656:
âYeah, the guard just brought her in. Sheâs pretty cute.â
âMaybe I should try my luck with her, you knowâ¦â
Before the last researcher could finish, a man in a lab coat entered the room with brisk steps, and the chatter faded into silence like a dropped pin in a crowded room.
He poured himself a cup of coffee, took a swift glance around, and left without so much as a nod, as though the break room were nothing but a ghost town.
Allison watched this, her thoughts clicking into place like a puzzle â this man was clearly someone of authority, far above the rest of them.
The others, sensing the shift, turned their attention elsewhere, murmuring in low voices.
âJarethâs still buried in his work. Didnât even take a second for a coffee break. Heâs spending more and more time locked away in the lab.â
âWell, youâve heard about it, havenât you? Thereâs been a breakthrough in the experiment. Test Subject 75 has survived three trials. If it survives a fourth, itâd be nothing short of a miracle!â
âThat means the experimentâs close to making it.â
âOh, heavens. Looks like weâll be kept on our toes soon enough.â
As the words sank in, the room fell quiet. The group, suddenly deflated, shuffled back to their desks with their cups in hand, lost in their thoughts. Allisonâs mind wandered.
Test Subject 75 â she was certain now. That must be Lilian, the one she had been hunting for.
From the data Kellan had shared, the womanâs experimental results were exactly three sets â and they were nothing short of intense.
That could only mean one thing: this very floor held the lab sheâd been searching for all along.
After straightening up the break room, Allison gathered her tools and began a casual walk through the office, her eyes scanning the locations of each desk as she passed. Yet, Jarethâs desk was nowhere to be found.
Undeterred, she turned her attention to the senior researchersâ offices, but as luck would have it, she accidentally wandered into a restricted area.
âWhy does this place feel off-limits?â she mused quietly.
She decided to play the part of a diligent cleaner for a while, trying to blend in, though not a single soul passed by her in all that time. The silver lining, however, was that she could easily bypass the surveillance systems and slip her lock-picking tools into action, gaining entry to an office that clearly housed something more than just typical paperwork.
After she entered and looked around, Allison realized in surprise that the central control panel for the entire floor was nestled within the officeâs walls â no doubt a testament to the arrogance of the officeâs owner.
With her nano gloves on, she began a meticulous search of the room, even managing to unlock several restricted areas. After some time, her efforts were rewarded with the discovery of a sleek silver key.
