Chapter 718:
âDonât worry. Iâm not reckless.â
After receiving her confirmation, Gordon headed back to the secret base. Once there, he found Amya in the basement. âHas Kellan come out of the lab yet?â
âNot yet,â she replied, but hesitated before continuing. âEarlier, Mr. Lloyd asked me if something had happened to Ms. Clarke. I didnât say anything, but⦠something feels off.â
Gordon turned his attention to the surveillance screen showing the lab. Kellan was walking toward the office, toolbox in hand, his stride purposeful.
A female researcher brightened when she saw him. âOh, youâre finally here. The air conditioningâs broken again.â
Kellan didnât seem surprised. âIâll take care of it. Just need to replace a part.â
As he walked by, the researcherâs eyes followed him, clearly admiring his build.
âHeâs pretty capable,â she murmured under her breath.
Another researcher clicked his tongue. âDonât get your hopes up. I heard he has a girlfriend.â
The female researcherâs expression fell, but she wasnât ready to give up so easily. She turned to Kellan once more. âHey, do you really have a girlfriend?â
âI do,â Kellan answered with complete seriousness. âHer nameâs Alice. She works here, just on the first basement level.â
The mention of Alice immediately made everyone in the room exchange uneasy glances.
Kellan sensed the tension and frowned. âWhatâs going on?â
Finally, one of the male researchers, unable to contain himself any longer, sighed dramatically and clicked his tongue. âIf Alice is your girlfriend, maybe you should reconsider. You might want to find someone else.â
Kellanâs jaw tightened.
The words hit him harder than he expected. Something wasnât right, and he knew it. If Allison were all right, Amya wouldnât have been so quiet about it.
Kellanâs gaze darkened as he turned back to the researchers. âPlease tell me everything you know.â
The gossiping researcher hesitated, but his curiosity ultimately got the better of him. He sighed deeply and finally spoke. âYou donât know, do you? Your girlfriend, Alice⦠well, Mr. Shaw has taken an interest in her.â
Kellanâs gaze was as cold as a winter storm. âWhat do you mean by that?â he asked, his voice clipped, betraying no emotion. The other researchers in the room watched, drawn in by a mix of sympathy and undeniable curiosity.
They couldnât tear their eyes away, each of them wondering if heâd finally crack, if theyâd catch a glimpse of raw emotion, whether it be sorrow or rage. Everyone waited, eager to see if Kellan would reveal any vulnerability.
