Chapter 727:
Fixing her gaze on the survivor, she said calmly, âGo back. Tell Daniel that if he wants the Hackerâs World key, heâll have to come and get it himself.â
âAlright, Iâll go. Iâll go right now!â
The man stumbled over his words, terror gripping him as he darted away, desperate to escape before Allison changed her mind.
The warehouse was strewn with bodies, but Allison navigated through the carnage without so much as a flicker of hesitation, her steps measured as she closed in on Verruckt.
The man was a mess, his injuries gruesome, yet his uncanny resilience far outpaced that of an ordinary human. The shallower cuts on his skin had already begun knitting themselves together, as if defying the blood still oozing from the deeper ones.
She mused over the inevitable price of tampering with nature â every miracle drug came with its curse.
If her hunch was right, Verrucktâs lifespan had likely been slashed, and his existence was riddled with frequent backlash and torment. His bloodshot eyes told a story that words could never convey.
âAllison, is he dead?â Gordonâs voice crackled over the comm, a mix of curiosity and puzzlement born from watching the scene unfold on the monitors.
âIf you ask me, we should have let the Mafia finish him off ages ago.â
Kneeling, Allison pressed two fingers to Verrucktâs throat, seeking the faint drumbeat of life.
âHeâs not dead yet,â she said, her tone brisk. âHis mind drove him farther than his body could handle. Add a cocktail of drugs muting his pain, and he just blacked out.â
It had been ages since Allison felt this cornered, her limits tested like a blade against a grindstone.
âAnd as for why not kill him? Even if Verruckt bites the dust, the research institute will just crown a new king. Our focus is getting to Lilian. Keeping him alive gives us leverage.â More than that, his death would send the lab into lockdown, tightening the noose around their mission.
Allison bent down, grasped Verrucktâs arm, and hefted him over her shoulder as if he weighed no more than a sack of grain.
âWe need to vanish before this place turns into a war zone. The people gunning for Verruckt tonight arenât limited to the mafia. Immortality Pharmaceuticals isnât pulling punches either.â
Gordonâs face darkened, his thoughts guarded. âFair point.â
The shrill wail of police sirens began to creep into the air. Allison froze, her sharp eyes darting to the shadows for cover.
âIs there anywhere close we can hide?â she asked, her voice edged with urgency.
