Chapter 736:
Jareth immediately bowed his head, his voice dripping with remorse. âThis is my fault, Mr. Shaw. I should have been more careful.â
The room fell into a suffocating silence. No one else dared to utter a single word. In that moment, Jareth was the only one permitted to speak.
Allison, standing nearby, observed the doctorsâ inaction and assumed their work was done. She stepped closer, shifting uncomfortably before speaking. âMr. Shaw, I was wondering if I could head back home now?â
Her hands gestured vaguely, trying to soften her words. âBut it seems like weâre quite a ways from the city, and thereâs no way I can make it back on my own. Could you, um, maybe ask someone to drop me off?â
âOf course,â Verruckt replied without any hint of emotion, his tone as casual as if she had asked for the time.
âThank you so much, Mr. Shaw!â Allison forced a smile, trying not to let her relief show too blatantly. âItâs alright, though. Mr. Williamson already knows where I live, so thereâs no need to trouble you further.â
Jareth chimed in, as if on cue. âShe lives in the Liber district, at the white rental building.â
The mention of the Liber district was enough to make a chill creep into the room. It was a place shrouded in danger, infamous for its reputation.
The white rental building? It was a name that even the bravest avoided, a symbol of decay and peril.
Verrucktâs brow furrowed slightly at the mention. After a momentâs pause, he raised his head and spoke with decisive authority. âJareth, take her to the apartment in the Nuding district. Itâs the nearest property I own to the lab.â
Jareth blinked, visibly startled. âAre you serious about letting her live there, Mr. Shaw?â
The apartment in the Nuding district was no ordinary place â it was a prized asset, something that spoke of status and exclusivity.
Verrucktâs expression darkened. âAre you questioning me?â
âNot at all, Mr. Shaw,â Jareth replied hastily, swallowing his surprise.
While Jareth didnât dare to object, Allison found herself in a bind. She had clearly overplayed her act, and now it seemed the boss had misinterpreted her plight, going so far as to offer her a place to stay.
Uncomfortable with the turn of events, she attempted to refuse politely. âMr. Shaw, thatâs really too much trouble. I can stay atââ
Before she could finish, he cut her off sharply. âThis is your reward.â
Then, turning to the doctors, he barked, âFinish treating the wound already. I donât have time to waste.â
âUnderstood.â The doctors snapped out of their hesitation and began working swiftly.
