Chapter 745:
After finishing work, Jareth made it a habit to walk her to her new residence. The apartment building stood in the middle of a wealthy neighborhood, where life seemed slower and the people moved unhurriedly.
âAlice, this is where Iâll leave you,â Jareth said, halting at the front door but choosing not to step inside. Without clear instructions from Verruckt, he didnât dare cross the threshold.
âIf thereâs anything you need for your day-to-day living, donât hesitate to ask,â he offered.
âYouâre very thoughtful, Mr. Williamson,â Allison replied with a polite tone. âI feel guilty troubling you.â
Jarethâs reply carried a subtle undertone. âItâs no trouble at all. After all, youâre staying in Mr. Shawâs home now. Helping you is like helping him. Besides, I might call on you for a favor one day.â
âThen I appreciate it, Mr. Williamson,â Allison said, acting as though she hadnât caught the underlying message in his words. âOh, by the way,â Allison began, her tone casual, âIâm thinking of inviting Mr. Shaw over for dinner later. Is there a supermarket nearby where I can pick up some ingredients?â
Jareth paused briefly, then reached for his phone. âWhat do you need?â he asked smoothly. âI can arrange to have everything delivered to you.â
His voice was steady, carrying a quiet assurance. It felt as though he could make even the most extravagant request appear effortless.
Jareth already knew that tonightâs meeting had been canceled and Verruckt would be eating here instead.
âYou really donât need to go through all that trouble,â Allison said quickly, waving her hand dismissively. âIâd rather do the shopping myself.â
Pulling a card from his pocket, Jareth handed it to her. âIn that case, use this,â he said. âMr. Shaw is a bit particular about his food, so aim for the⦠pricier options.â
âAlright,â Allison said with a smile.
By the time they went their separate ways, the sun had nearly set. A soft amber light streamed through the windows, bathing the interior in its fading glow.
Allison paused to take in her surroundings. The walls were painted a pale gray, and the furniture was stark and angular, as precise as the calculations in a scientistâs notebook. Even the golden hues of the sunset seemed to lose their warmth inside this space.
Although it was a high-end apartment in a wealthy district, it carried the sterile, suffocating feel of a laboratory. It brought Verruckt to mind â that deranged man.
The most striking detail was the surveillance camera mounted in the corridor. Its tiny red light blinked steadily, a constant reminder of unseen eyes. Knowing Verrucktâs nature, Allison had little doubt he was monitoring her. To keep him from suspecting anything, she, as always, chose to act the part.
