Chapter 754:
Jareth had to admit that Alice certainly was ambitious and tactical. Getting involved with Verruckt this quickly was something he hadnât anticipated. His curiosity only deepened as he replayed the image of Verrucktâs injured lip in his mind. Unable to resist, he cornered Allison in the break room after leaving Verrucktâs office.
âSo, Alice, care to share what went down between you and Mr. Shaw last night?â he asked with a sly grin, leaning casually against the counter.
Allison looked up from her coffee, her expression unreadable.
âNothing happened,â she replied, her tone dismissive. âMr. Williamson, youâre too nosy.â
Jareth wasnât deterred. He folded his arms, his grin widening. âOh, really? Then how do you explain the mark on his lip?â
Allison paused for a heartbeat, then answered, âIt was an accident.â Her voice was calm, but her sharp eyes hinted that she knew exactly what Jareth was implying.
After a brief hesitation, she added, âWe just shared a few drinks. Thatâs all.â
She expected her explanation to put an end to the conversation, but Jareth wasnât so easily convinced. He tilted his head, his gaze turning more inquisitive. âDrinks? With Mr. Shaw? Funny, because Iâve never seen him drink.â
The remark caught Allison off guard, though she didnât let it show. She quickly countered, âMaybe you donât know him as well as you think.â
She reasoned that Verruckt was far too cautious and sharp to drink without staying on high alert.
Jareth, however, was still unfazed. He rested his chin on one hand, his tone taking on a falsely benevolent edge. âAlice, Iâm only saying this because I care. Iâd hate to see you miss out on an opportunity that could change your life.â His smile was calculated, laced with an unspoken implication.
âYouâve noticed it, havenât you? Youâre important to Mr. Shaw. But if you insist on clinging to your⦠current relationship, you might just let him slip away. Is that what you want?â
Allisonâs gaze sharpened as she studied him. âMy current relationship?â she repeated, her tone neutral but curious. âAre you suggesting I break up with my boyfriend?â
âAbsolutely. Letâs face it, your boyfriendâs a nobody. Heâs broke, canât even afford to spoil a girlfriend as stunning as you, and, oh, hereâs the kicker, he managed toââ
Injure himself in some laughable kitchen mishap? Do you really think someone like that is worth your time?â Jareth said without hesitation. His words were steeped in condescension. âDonât tell me that you plan to waste your potential, dragging yourself through life to support a man who canât even stand on his own two feet.â
Allison responded with a light laugh, not because his words amused her, but because it was the easiest way to deflect his obvious baiting. She knew better than to let her true feelings show, especially with Verruckt likely keeping tabs on everything.
