Chapter 757:
Allison chuckled lightly. âItâs no trouble. I actually find it kind of fun,â she replied with a smile. She slipped on the mask and made her way to the reception room.
A short while later, she walked in carrying two steaming cups of coffee.
âHello,â she greeted, her voice slightly raspy, as though her cold were genuine. âI work here at the lab. If you need anything, please donât hesitate to let me know.â
Melany barely glanced up, saying, âJust set the coffee down.â She then took one of the cups with a stiff, polite air and sipped it without a hint of recognition.
Colton fidgeted with his tie, his impatience showing. âWhen is your boss going to be free?â he asked curtly.
Allison kept her expression pleasant as she answered, âIt wonât be much longer. Heâs just about to wrap up his meeting.â Her tone was warm and professional as she took a seat across from them.
âActually,â she added, âif thereâs anything specific you need, you can go over it with me first. Iâll make sure everything is organized and ready for him.â
Colton gave a quick nod. âThat works. Itâll save us both some time.â
He pulled out a document and placed it on the table in front of her.
âThis outlines my motherâs condition,â he explained. âHer episodes cause her unbearable pain, and weâre hoping to find a solution.â
Allison already knew about Lindyâs headaches, but she made a show of flipping through the document, her expression thoughtful.
Colton studied her as she read, a strange sense of familiarity tugging at him.
Melany, noticing his unease, spoke up with a sharp edge to her voice. âColton, this woman doesnât look like a researcher. Showing her those medical files is a waste of time. She probably canât even understand them.â
If she had made the remark before Allison opened the file, it might have come across as concern. But saying it after Allison had already skimmed through several pages made it obvious that she was trying to humiliate her.
Unbothered, Allison closed the file with calm precision and addressed the comment with a level tone. âIâve reviewed the document. Itâs certainly a challenging case of headaches, but there are ways to ease the pain.â
She then shifted her gaze to Melany and added, âHere at our lab, we donât make room for incompetence. If youâre struggling to understand, I can explain it to you.â
The words landed like a slap, leaving Melany stunned. Her face darkened, and she clenched her teeth before snapping, âThat wonât be necessary.â
Colton failed to pick up on the subtle strain in the exchange between Melany and the woman before them. He simply frowned and asked, âSo, does it take a long time to create a drug like this?â
