Chapter 784:
The chaos quickly caught the attention of Fionaâs father, Josh Smith, who finally walked into the banquet hall, his gaze sweeping over the mess.
âWhatâs going on here?â he demanded, noticing the guests already filing out.
âSorry, Mr. Smith. We didnât handle things well. Mr. Shaw had a disagreement with Miss Smith over his companion,â a waiter explained, recounting the events in detail.
Joshâs face darkened with fury.
âFiona, my office. Now!â he snapped, then turned to the waiter, his voice firm. âGet the guests calmed down and tell them our banquet will begin soon. Do whatever it takes to keep them here!â
âYes, Mr. Smith.â
In the office, the remnants of Fionaâs anger hung thick in the air. Her glare was lethal, as if ready to kill Allison at any moment.
Josh wore a deep frown, breaking the silence with a question. âDo you realize what today is?â
âYes, the triennial banquet,â Fiona snapped back, her voice dripping with disdain. âBut I canât just sit back when sheâs here! Her presence will influence the guests and tarnish our company!â
Suddenly, Joshâs patience snapped; his hand connected sharply with Fionaâs cheek. The slap resounded ominously, harsher than anything Verrucktâs cronies might have dared.
âOuch!â Fionaâs voice broke, her eyes wide with shock and pain. âDad, you hit me!â
Joshâs voice was icy as he rebuked her. âIâve lost count of how many times Iâve told you to steer clear of Verruckt, yet here we are again!â
âYou just donât get it, Dad!â Fionaâs dismissal was swift, her cheek still red. She rubbed her stinging cheek, her voice tinged with bitterness. âVerruckt is a decent and smart man, worthy of me. Heâs just been tricked by that woman, thatâs all.â
Her words were laced with venom, fueled by the jealousy that seethed within her. Fiona envied Allison, who had captured Verrucktâs affections, his kisses. Imagining a world where she could simply erase Allison and step into her place consumed her.
Joshâs face grew colder as he listened to his daughterâs delusions. He knew talking was futile.
âLock her in the top floor,â he commanded, his voice weary. âAnd she doesnât leave without my say-so.â
No sooner had he spoken than two robust maids appeared, taking Fiona by the arms and escorting her out. The old butler watched Joshâs mood darken further and ventured cautiously, âJosh, donât fret too much. Sheâll come around with age.â
