Chapter 801:
âExplain what?â Coltonâs voice cracked, disappointment etching deep lines across his face as he stared at Melany. âAllison was the one who saved me five years ago, but you swept in and took all the credit!â His heart felt like it was in a vice.
âMelany, our entire relationship started on a lie. Youâve been shadowing me, snapping photos like some detective.â
The evidence stacked against her was rock-solid, boxing her into a corner. Yet, as the weight of his words sank in, a sliver of hope sparked in her eyes. He hadnât found the other folders, so he didnât know that she had also gathered information on other rich men!
Tears brimmed in her eyes as she stammered, âColton, my love for you⦠itâs too much. I just canâtââ But Colton cut her off, his voice sharp.
âYour love? Melany, do you love me, or my wealth and power? You twisted everything so Iâd turn against Allison! Why did you trick me into believing Allison was a bad woman?â
He inhaled deeply, struggling to steady his voice.
âIf you truly loved me, you should be grateful to her, my savior. But no! You orchestrated it so Iâd leave her in the dark.â
Melanyâs face went pale as she looked up at him, startled.
âColton, are you saying youâre going back to her?â
Her heart plummeted, her fists balling in frustration.
âI wonât lie â I did deceive you. But it was all out of love, a desperate plan I crafted over the years, even if it meant stalking.â
Tears carved paths down her cheeks as she faced him, a bitter irony in her gaze. âCould Allison ever care for you as deeply as I do?â
She even twisted the knife with her words. âI did cover up the truth, but I never pushed you to hate her. Overwhelmed with guilt, I ran away and married someone else, hoping it would clear the way for you two.â
As she wept, her voice cracked. âBut in fact, I found I couldnât stop thinking about you, not even for a day over those three years.â
Colton laughed, a hollow sound. âSo, why did you pay Devin at the orphanage to smear Allisonâs name? Was that not to make me loathe her?â
Melany was stunned, her secret laid bare. She never thought heâd even discovered that evidence in the USB. Now, denying it would only make things worse.
âI confess, I was green with envy. I loved you from the first moment, but I was too timid, too insecure to even show my face.â
Tears cascaded down her cheeks. âEvery time I looked at that photo, I wished I had been the one to save you. If I had been there first, I would have risked everything to protect you!â
