Chapter 869:
Allison quickly came up with an excuse. âI didnât sleep well last night.â
She then pretended to be curious, hoping to ask more. âEveryoneâs here, so whereâs Mr. Shaw?â
Judith shrugged. âWe donât know where he is. Maybe you should ask Mr. Williamson. He just got here.â
âOkay,â Allison said.
She made her way to the office.
Before long, she spotted Jareth.
He likely hadnât gotten much rest the night before. With a cup of strong black coffee in hand, he looked serious.
Allison got up and casually stood next to Jareth. âMr. Williamson, youâre here. I thought you and Mr. Shaw were out since heâs not around.â
At that moment, they were the only two in the area.
Jareth yawned and answered without much thought. âMr. Shaw got called by the mayor, probably dealing with some issues.â
As if recalling something, he added a quick reminder. âJust so you know, the experiment subjects will be moved at two this afternoon.â

Allison blinked and asked, âAlright, what do you need me to do?â
Jareth paused briefly, then said, âCould you grab a document for me? Mr. Shaw mentioned youâre allowed inside. Itâs on the second row of the bookshelf in the lab, inside a red folder.â
Allison felt a flicker of unease as she heard his request.
Trying to sound offhand, she replied, âI thought only Mr. Shaw had fingerprint access to that lab.â
Jareth laughed lightly, as if a detail had just occurred to him. âOh, Mr. Shaw loosened the access rules earlier today. Just go in with the researcher assigned to the test subjects.â
Allison frowned thoughtfully and asked, âWho should I look for, then?â
Jareth gestured in a particular direction. âHer nameâs Lena.â
Allison recognized the name immediately.
Lena admired Verruckt but always seemed to carry a grudge against her.
âGot it,â Allison said with a nod before heading toward Lenaâs workstation.
When she arrived, she spoke politely. âHi, Mr. Williamson asked me to pick up something from the lab. I donât have fingerprint access, though. He mentioned I could go in with you.â
Lenaâs irritation grew as she listened and studied Allison. âOh, so Mr. Shaw likes you so much but didnât bother to give you access?â she scoffed. âLooks like your bond with him isnât as special as you think.â
Allison gave her a warm, unfazed smile. âYouâre probably right. Maybe Mr. Shaw trusts you more. After all, he only asks me to patch him up when heâs hurt and avoids letting me do anything risky. Probably thinks Iâm too clumsy for the important stuff.â
