Chapter 871:
Just as she flipped to a new page in her notebook, red lights blazed across the lab, bathing the room in a glaring glow.
âWarning! Defense system triggered!â blared the automated voice, accompanied by a deafening alarm.
Lena whipped around, her heart racing, and saw Allison sprawled on the floor, right beside Verrucktâs safe.
âYou idiot! What did you do?â Lena shrieked, her voice shaking with panic.
She could feel the weight of responsibility crushing her. As the one in charge, any blunder of this magnitude would land squarely on her. If Verruckt got wind of this mess, Lena knew that sheâd be the first to pay the price.
Allison stumbled to her feet, biting her lip. She looked at Lena with an expression that seemed innocent. âIâm sorry,â she said. âI was searching for the red folder and just trippedâ¦â
Lenaâs hands trembled with rage.
âItâs in cabinet number three!â she snapped, quickly using her authority to shut off the alarm blaring from the defense system.
Allison, however, kept a close eye on everything Lena did. Outside, the researchers, alarmed by the noise, rushed in.

âWhat happened?â Judith asked from the front. Lately, everyone had been especially on edge about the alarm sounds.
If it werenât for the high-priority experiment subjects here, they probably wouldnât have come rushing in.
âNothing, just a small accident,â Lena replied.
She really wanted to call out Allison for her clumsiness, but she held back, worried about getting into trouble with Verruckt. She bit her lip instead.
âEverythingâs fine,â she said. âYou can all go back to what you were doing.â
Judith clicked her tongue in frustration. âIt better be,â she muttered.
Finding no real problem, Judith and the others left the room.
Once the door closed and silence returned, Lena shot a harsh look at Allison. âDidnât you realize thereâs a defense system here?â
âI didnât know,â Allison answered, playing innocent. âThere wasnât anything like that when I came in last night.â
Lenaâs expression darkened at her response.
Lena had heard that Alice arrived with Verruckt the night before.
Who knew what this woman was really up to? Maybe she was trying to get Verrucktâs attention.
âThe folder youâre looking for should be over there,â Lena said, pointing to a nearby cabinet. âGo find it yourself.â
At first, Lena thought about messing with Allison, but she quickly changed her mind.
All she wanted now was for Allison to grab the folder and leave.
